The White Stripes headed to Rock & Roll Hall of Fame; 22nd Detroit act to be inducted
But 28 years later, the White Stripes are indeed headed for posterity in the hall of fame: The Detroit duo is part of a 2025 class of inductees revealed Sunday night, also including Bad Company, Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, Cyndi Lauper, Outkast and Soundgarden.
When the White Stripes are officially inducted during a Nov. 8 ceremony in Los Angeles, they'll become the 22nd Detroit artist enshrined in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's prestigious performer wing. It's a legacy that began in 1987, when Aretha Franklin was the rock hall's first female inductee.
The 2025 honorees were revealed Sunday night on 'American Idol,' part of a broader RRHOF-Disney-ABC alliance that will include a live stream of the Nov. 8 ceremony on Disney+ and a later special on ABC-TV, which will then live on Hulu.
In the years following their summer 1997 debut at Detroit's Gold Dollar, the White Stripes became flagbearers for a raw, minimalist movement broadly known as the garage rock revival, leading a wave of bands such as the Strokes and Black Keys. The Detroit duo drew on a deep well of hometown influences for its blues-brewed sound, with Meg White's straightforward drumming undergirding Jack White's explosive guitar and expressively yelped vocals.
Their music was accompanied by a signature red-and-white aesthetic and a whimsical mythology that portrayed the duo as brother and sister. (They were in fact a formerly married couple.)
Before they bowed out in 2011, the White Stripes served up six studio albums and hits such as 'Hotel Yorba,' 'Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground,' 'We're Going to Be Friends' and the crowning 'Seven Nation Army," whose riff endures as a popular sports-stadium anthem around the globe.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame also announced 2025 inductions in other categories, including musical influence (Salt-N-Pepa, Warren Zevon) and musical excellence (Thom Bell, Nicky Hopkins, Carole Kaye). The Ahmet Ertegun Award, an industry executive honor, will go this year to Lenny Waronker, best known for his time with Warner Bros. Records.
In the world of the White Stripes, Sunday's announcement presents immediate intrigue: What will be Meg White's involvement come November at L.A.'s Peacock Theater? Beyond occasional spottings around Detroit, the Grosse Pointe Woods-born drummer has been a reclusive figure since the band's 2011 split. Her last public performance came in 2009.
So would she join Jack White for a White Stripes reunion set?
Those aren't unprecedented questions at the RRHOF, where history is lined with drama involving original band members — including contentious situations among the likes of Kiss, Van Halen and Journey. There's no apparent animosity between Jack and Meg White — she regularly attends his Detroit solo concerts — so that wouldn't seem to factor in here.
We can assume Jack White is up for some sort of live performance on Nov. 8: The southwest Detroit native has a way of rising to the prime-time spotlight, most recently last summer's hometown Michigan Central spectacular and February's 'Saturday Night Live' 50th anniversary concert, where he closed the show.
The reemergence of Meg White for the first White Stripes performance in 16 years would certainly make for a gripping, stop-the-presses moment. But given the duo's convictions when it comes to history, place and time, it wouldn't be shocking if they opted to leave the purity of their legacy as it is.
This year's Rock & Roll of Fame induction was a second shot for the White Stripes: The band was originally nominated in 2023 during their first year of eligibility, which kicks in 25 years after an artist's first commercial release. (In the White Stripes' case, that was the 1998 single 'Let's Shake Hands').
And this might not be Jack White's only opportunity for RRHOF glory: Along with his various other band projects, he will eventually will become eligible for induction as a solo artist, presumably in 2029.

Oscar Isaac Is Ready to Be a ‘Star Wars' Again
Oscar Isaac is a perpetually busy actor, and though he's made his share of dramas, he's particularly beloved by genre fans for his work in that realm: Dune, Moon Knight, Ex Machina, the Spider-Verse series, and even those animated Addams Family movies. But atop that mountain sits Star Wars, featuring Isaac as rebel pilot Poe Dameron across the sequel trilogy. With Poe surviving the events of The Rise of Skywalker, might there be a chance fans will see him again? Speaking to Variety in a new interview about Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein, featuring Isaac as monster-maker Victor Frankenstein, he was asked if he'd ever return as Poe Dameron. In response, the actor went right to another big franchise: The Simpsons. (Somehow, he hasn't done a voice on the long-running show?) Specifically, he does a Ralph Wiggum imitation, since the piece describes him using 'a high-pitched child's voice' to reply, 'I'm a Star Wars.' All joking aside, though, he went on to add, 'Yeah, I'd be a Star Wars again if there was something good to do with that.' It's just an aside in the article—which is full of fun details about Frankenstein—and it's something Isaac has commented on before, but it's still an intriguing idea. Earlier this year, fellow sequel star John Boyega said at a fan convention that he was also tentatively open to returning to Star Wars, despite his less-than-pleasant experience with its more toxic fans. Might we see a Finn-Poe reunion if that Rey movie ever gets off the ground? Would you be excited to see these jacket-sharing pals get the band back together if so? Want more io9 news? Archie: Riverdale Character Scores New Movie & TV Show, First Details Revealed
is returning for not one, but two different projects. The Archie Andrews character was originally created in 1941 by John L. Goldwater, Bob Montana, and Vic Bloom. The main character of the Archie Comics franchise, he was portrayed by KJ Apa in the CW Network's Riverdale show, which ran for seven seasons from 2017 to 2023. What do we know about the Archie show and movie? First reported by Jeff Sneider's The InSneider, a new movie based on Archie Comics is now in the works at Universal Studios. Supergirl's Tom King is writing the script, while Phil Lord, Chris Miller, Emma Wats, and Jon Goldwater will serve as producers. 'Sources say the film will be inspired, in part, by the comic book Archie: The Married Life, which presents Archie with two alternate futures — one in which he marries girl-next-door Betty Cooper, and one where he marries sexy heiress Veronica Lodge,' Sneider said. The new movie isn't the only Riverdale project that's in the works. Sneider further reports that Disney Television Studios and Warner Bros. Television Studios are partnering to make a Disney+ show based on Afterlife with Archie, a 10-issue comic series that launched in 2013. 'When Jughead's beloved pet Hot Dog is killed in a hit and run, Jughead turns to the only person he knows who can help bring back his furry best friend—Sabrina the Teenage Witch,' a description of Afterlife with Archie reads. 'Using dark, forbidden magic, Sabrina is successful, and Hot Dog returns to the land of the living. But he's not the same… and soon, the darkness he brings back with him from beyond the grave begins to spread, forcing Archie, Betty, Veronica, and the gang to try to escape from Riverdale!' Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who was the showrunner on Riverdale and wrote Afterlife with Archie, will serve as the showrunner on the Disney+ show. Sneider says the show will be developed over the next year with 'the goal of getting it greenlit by next summer.' Originally reported by Brandon Schreur at SuperHeroHype. White House Rages at Rocker Who Dissed Trump's ‘Vulgar' Oval Office
The Trump administration has clapped back at Grammy-winning musician Jack White's critical commentary on the president's new-look Oval Office. White, former front man for The White Stripes, unleashed on Instagram on Monday, claiming that Donald Trump's torrent of gold and gilded additions to the office were an 'embarrassment to American history,' describing it as 'a vulgar, gold leafed and gaudy, professional wrestler's dressing room.' 'Look at his disgusting taste, would you even buy a used car from this conman, let alone give him the nuclear codes?,' White said, posting a photo of the Oval Office. 'A gold plated Trump bible would look perfect up on that mantle with a pair of Trump shoes on either side wouldn't it?' Responding to White's verdict on Trump's tacky decor, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung told the Daily Beast: 'Jack White is a washed up, has-been loser posting drivel on social media because he clearly has ample time on his hands due to his stalled career.' Cheung added, 'It's apparent he's been masquerading as a real artist, because he fails to appreciate, and quite frankly disrespects, the splendor and significance of the Oval Office inside of 'The People's House.'' White's post has had almost 120,000 likes and is the latest of many anti-Trump comments the 50-year-old has made on social media, which has seen him label the president everything from a 'obvious fascist and wannabe dictator' to a 'Nazi clown.' When one comment on his Oval Office post said 'it was an insult' to compare 'this gold poop' to locker rooms, White noted, 'I agree that pro wrestlers don't deserve the comparison.' White has won 12 Grammy awards, his first being for the White Stripes classic 'Seven Nation Army', a song which Trump used without permission in a campaign video last year, prompting the musician to threaten to sue him. 'Don't even think about using my music you fascists,' White wrote in a fiery Instagram post responding to the video. Despite Cheung claiming White's career has 'stalled', his most recent album, last year's No Name, was nominated at the 2025 Grammy awards for Best Rock Album. His next major gig is the CBGB Festival in Brooklyn next month, playing alongside Iggy Pop and the Sex Pistols. Trump has been bringing a touch of his Florida Mar-a-Lago resort to the White House this year. Paintings have gold frames, gold cherubs have been shipped in from his resort, with gilded mirrors on the wall and gold appliqués on the fireplace, which is topped with urns. 'I picked it all myself,' Trump said last month. 'I'm very proud of it.' Barbara Res, once a VP at the Trump Organization, witnessed the real estate tycoon's penchant for filling Trump Tower, Mar-a-Lago and the Plaza Hotel with gold, polished bronze and brass. 'He used the word 'class' a lot, and it was a high-class thing for him,' Res told USA Today of his taste in decorations and fittings. 'It conveyed an illusion of taste and wealth, and that's why he wanted to gild everything.' Trump has also replaced the lawn in the Rose Garden with paving, claiming women had complained their high heels were sinking into the grass. He is planning on hosting a UFC match on the grounds of the White House next year.
