Former Subedar Major Darshan Singh recalled the day of Pritpal's wedding when the soldier walked through the village streets like a king, adorned in wedding finery. 'We were all waiting for his first leave. No one imagined he would come back like this,' he said. Pritpal, known for his soft-spoken nature, had completed commando training and was on the verge of promotion from Lance Naik to Naik, his kin stated.
MLA Jagtar Singh Dyalpura expressed pride in Pritpal's sacrifice, assuring that the Punjab government would stand shoulder to shoulder with his family. He confirmed that the martyr would be given a final farewell with full state honours.
Harpreet Singh, Pritpal's elder brother, broke down while talking. 'Our brother is gone, but the terrorist who shot him is still alive. The government must take revenge. My brother was supposed to light his first Diwali lamp at home this year — now that will never happen.'
The other soldier, sepoy Harminder Singh, who too lost his life in the encounter, hailed from Mandi Gobindgarh's Badinpur village

A press conference organised by the 'West Bengal Police and Kolkata Police Abashik Samiti' comrpising wives and family members of police personnel turned contentious on Tuesday, when they protested against what they called a trend of disrespect towards the force. The event, held at the Press Club, was followed by a protest march to Gandhi Murti. Salma Sultana, identified as the wife of a police officer, said, 'During the Nabanna Abhijan, the opposition leader used bad language against the Commissioner of Police. This is unacceptable. An attempt was made to kill a police officer's brother. The opposition leader has constantly attacked the police. We condemn this. Our family values are not respected. Our brothers and husbands are on duty on the streets. This is unacceptable.' When a section of journalists pressed her for clarity, Sultana said, 'I don't know who is BJP and who is Trinamool. We are protesting against those targeting the police.' Asked why a similar protest had not been held after an allegation that Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal had abused a police officer in the past, one spokesperson said, ' that not holding a protest then may have been a lapse on their behalf, but that should not stop them from speaking out now' Sultana reiterated the group's main demand: 'We are here because it has become a trend to attack police, verbally abuse them, and say anything about them and their family. Police are there to protect us; they, and their families, deserve basic respect.' The group also addressed other recent controversies. They rejected claims that police had harmed the parents of Abhaya, the trainee doctor whose murder shocked the city. On charges that a police officer desecrated the Tricolour, the organisers said they were unaware of such an incident, 'If such an incident occurred, those responsible should face punishment.' "Bringing Governance Closer To People": Chief Minister Rekha Gupta Unveils Plan For Mini Secretariats Across Delhi
New Delhi: "Bringing governance closer to people"- that's how Chief Minister Rekha Gupta summed up her latest push to make government services more accessible. On Tuesday, she announced that every district in Delhi will soon have its own mini secretariat. Delhi's 11 revenue districts will each get a mini secretariat aimed at resolving citizens' issues locally instead of forcing them to visit multiple government offices across the city. "Resolving the problems of Delhi's people is a priority; therefore, the govt wants to establish a mini secretariat in every district so that people do not have to visit isolated government offices repeatedly," Ms Gupta said after chairing a high-level meeting. Field Visits to Build Trust The Chief Minister urged district magistrates (DMs) to conduct regular field visits. "This serves two purposes: firstly, they gain firsthand knowledge of problems and their solutions; secondly, it helps build public trust in the govt," she said. She also called for smooth distribution of Tricolours under the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign ahead of Independence Day. "All DMs should ensure that the distribution of the Tricolour from district offices is carried out smoothly and successfully," Ms Gupta said. Praise and New Measures Ms Gupta praised the role of DMs during the Kanwar Yatra and directed that pending payments to Kanwar committees be cleared within three months. Addressing concerns about staff shortages raised by DMs, she assured that the issues would be resolved at the earliest. To make public grievance redressal more effective, officials from the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and Delhi Jal Board will now participate in district-level public hearings. The CMO confirmed that work on setting up mini secretariats has already begun.

J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday (August 12, 2025) participated in the Tiranga Yatra procession at Srinagar's Dal Lake, underscoring the place the Tricolour holds in the country's pride. 'The National Flag is a living symbol of our unity, peace, and harmony. The Tiranga carries the hopes and sacrifices of generations and reflects India's true strength — our diversity. I urge everyone to cherish it and uphold its timeless ideals of secularism and brotherhood,' Mr. Abdullah said. The Chief Minister also recalled the struggle of patriots to see the Tricolour displayed on government buildings. 'There was once a student who returned to India from the United States to challenge restrictions on the use of the Tricolour. He pursued the matter legally and eventually helped secure the right for citizens to fly the National Flag at their residences,' Mr. Abdullah said. Earlier in the day, L-G Sinha flagged off the Tiranga Yatra. 'The Tiranga is my Dharma. The Tiranga is my strength. The Tiranga is my heartbeat,' Mr. Sinha said. Hundreds of people, including officials, joined the rally to honour the National Flag. 'The flag symbolises our unity, pride, and shared identity,' the L-G said. Stating that thousands had gathered to honour the National Flag, Mr. Sinha said, 'We must also resolve to build the edifice of a modern and prosperous J&K on the foundation of the sacrifices made by our soldiers of the Army, CAPFs, and Police.' He added that, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Jammu and Kashmir has entered a new era of inclusive development. 'With renewed self-confidence and faith, the people of J&K are writing their own destiny. The unfulfilled dreams of generations are finally being realised.
