AI 171 plane crash: Karnataka Minister Eshwar Khande expresses condolences
Kalaburagi (Karnataka) [India], June 13 (ANI): Karnataka Minister Eshwar Khandre on Friday expressed condolences to the families of the deceased of the AI 171 plane crash.
'It is a painful incident. I express my condolences to the families of the deceased. I pray to God that the people who passed away may their souls rest in peace, and their families get the strength to bear their sad demise,' Khandre said, speaking to the media.
Meanwhile, Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla also expressed deep sorrow over the plane crash. He further stated that several people from Rajasthan were among the victims.
Speaking to reporters, Birla said, 'The whole country is saddened and stands by the families of the deceased. Several people from Rajasthan have also died in this accident. We stand by their families.'The AI-171 Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 aeroplane bound for London's Gatwick had crashed shortly after it took off from the Ahmedabad International Airport on Thursday. The airlines said only one out of the 242 people on board the aircraft survived the crash, claiming the lives of 241 people on board the Boeing 787-8, Air India flight 171, including 12 crew members, Air India confirmed post-midnight on Friday.
The aircraft was piloted by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, a Line Training Captain with 8,200 hours of flying experience, assisted by First Officer Clive Kundar, who had logged 1,100 flying hours. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau is a division of the Ministry of Civil Aviation tasked with probing aircraft accidents in India.
A formal investigation has been launched by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) into the deadly crash of Air India flight 171 that killed 241 people onboard, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu confirmed on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday visited the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital and met with Vishwashkumar Ramesh, the lone person to survive the crash.
The Prime Minister, also met with others admitted to the same hospital with injuries sustained.

India, US close to finalising 'early tranche' of trade deal

Govt is likely to offer concessions for some of the farm products that are of interest to the US, along with concessions on automobiles, in return for getting a 10 per cent duty - Trump's baseline tariff - for labour-intensive products, such as textiles, footwear and, possibly, certain auto parts. With the current US administration lacking Congressional mandate to finalise trade deals, a zero-duty regime will have to wait until things settle down in the US. With a 10 per cent levy on products where India has a comparative advantage, the government is hoping to make Indian exports more competitive, especially if the reciprocal tariffs kick in. In any case, India, with 26 per cent reciprocal tariffs, including the 10 per cent baseline duty, was seen to enjoy a competitive advantage over several countries with which its exports compete. Besides, with sanitary and phytosanitary standards and technical barriers to trade also discussed during the last round of negotiations with American officials between June 4 and 10, the government is hoping that some of the issues faced by exporters shipping goods to the US will also be addressed. Digital trade, customs and trade facilitation and the legal framework were part of the discussions in the Capital earlier this month. Government sources indicated that India is keen for a text to be ready in some form before the deal is made public. This is seen to be crucial as the current US administration has been making announcements without the draft text in place and then claiming victory. Even the Chinese authorities have had to contend with the claims made by Trump on social media after the last dialogue. The announcement with the UK was seen to be more structured. By all accounts, several issues, including the court ruling on reciprocal tariffs for which Trump had invoked emergency provisions, will, however, play a part in finalising the early tranche for which a Fall (Sept/ Oct) date had been fixed. Besides, India is keen that an arrangement be worked out where it retains an advantage over its peers in case the tariffs are declared illegal by American courts. Parliamentary Panel likely to study Ahmedabad plane crash, hold talks with Air India & Boeing

The panel is planning to come up with a detailed report on the safety of passengers in aeroplanes, and in this regard, it is looking to hold wider discussions on the Ahmedabad plane crash, sources panel, at its next meeting next week, will decide the contours of the deliberations on this incident, sources said. Another factor which will be considered is the date when this Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 was procured (at that time the airline was under government control), why it was preferred over other planes, and how it was maintained for the last decade or so, sources presenting a report on the safety of passengers travelling on planes, a detailed analysis would be done from man, machine, mechanisms and systems in place perspective, sources in the panel said.

While the demand and anticipation for full-fledged air operations from the the industrial city have remained for years fuelled by aspirations for better connectivity and economic growth, the AI tragedy has raised questions about whether safety is being compromised in the rush to operationalise airports. For years, Ludhiana residents and business leaders have advocated for commercial flights, but now they are demanding a comprehensive re-evaluation of safety regulations and land-use planning around the airport zone. Deeply affected by the Ahmedabad tragedy, the alumni of SCD Govt College said the govt acts only after a tragedy of this scale. Brij Bhushan Goyal, organising secretary of the alumni body, said, "The lives lost are a result of regulatory negligence. Our politicians must act as guardians of public safety, not just as figureheads who react after public outrage." They have raised the demand for a complete ban on further housing or urban development around the airport. They said the periphery of Halwara airport is seeing rapid urbanisation, especially under development schemes by Glada, but it is putting lives at risk in case of any air mishap. "The area is being consumed by housing colonies with no concern for aviation safety," Goyal added. Col JS Gill (retd), a social activist said, "We need population-free safety buffers around all Indian airfields."
