Construction of 2,498 houses under ‘Kalaignar Kanavu Illam' scheme under way in Mayiladuthurai
Construction of 2,498 houses for economically weaker families is underway in Mayiladuthurai district under the Tamil Nadu government's 'Kalaignar Kanavu Illam' scheme, launched with the vision of achieving a hut-free Tamil Nadu by 2030.
The scheme, announced by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in the State Assembly for the year 2024–25, aims to construct one lakh concrete houses across Tamil Nadu in the first phase. In Mayiladuthurai, the project is being implemented through the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department, with work orders sanctioned in November 2024.
As part of the scheme, each beneficiary is provided financial assistance of ₹3.5 lakh, disbursed in three phases, for constructing a 360 sq ft house. Beneficiaries can choose from four approved design models according to their preference.
'The beneficiary selection process was based on earlier surveys conducted under Kalaignar Veedu Vazhangum Thittam(KVVT) to identify eligible families living in huts. Priority is given to non-government employees, with a reservation ratio of 40% for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and 60% for other communities. Persons with disabilities and former military personnel are also eligible under the scheme.' said an official.
The construction targets for different blocks in the district include 550 houses in Mayiladuthurai block, 450 in Sirkazhi, 450 in Kuthalam, 548 in Sembanarkoil, and 500 in Kollidam, covering a total of 2,498 houses.
Of these, 733 houses have been fully completed, and payments have been settled for these units. Officials said they are working towards completing the remaining houses within the next two months.

A girl from a tribal community from Tamil Nadu studying in a State-run residential school has qualified for the JEE Advanced 2025 and is set to get admission into one of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT). Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Monday lauded A. Rajeshwari, who despite having lost her father last year, qualified in the JEE Advanced 2025. He added that that the Tamil Nadu government would bear her education expenses. 'The true pride for the IIT would be when more daughters like Rajeshwari join them. This Dravidian model of governance would continuously work towards it,' Mr. Stalin said in a social media post. AIADMK general secretary and former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami also commended the student for having secured 417th rank in the competitive exam. He wished her the best in her future endeavours.

Delimitation will address concerns of southern States: MHA
The delimitation exercise will take care of the concerns expressed by southern States, and discussions will be held with all stakeholders at the appropriate time, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said on Thursday (June 5, 2025). In a post on X, a day after it announced that the Census exercise will be concluded by March 1, 2027, the MHA said that Home Minister Amit Shah has 'clarified on many occasions that in delimitation exercise, concerns of southern states will be taken care of and discussed with all concerned at an appropriate time.' As per Constitutional norms, the first Census held after 2026 can be used as the basis to redraw Lok Sabha constituencies. The next general election is expected to be held in 2029. 'Questionable timing' On Wednesday (June 3, 2025), Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had questioned the timing of the Census, saying that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had deliberately delayed the exercise to 2027, 'making their plan clear to reduce Tamil Nadu's Parliamentary representation'. The southern States have been opposing the population-based criteria for the redrawing of constituencies, which was last done on the basis of 1971 Census data. COVID-19 delays In a series of posts on X, the MHA added that the Census was originally planned to be conducted in 2021 and all preparations for this had been completed. 'However, due to outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic across the country, the Census work was postponed. The aftershock of Covid-19 continued for quite some time,' it said. The Ministry added that all sectors, including education, were disrupted by the pandemic. 'Around 30 lakh enumerators are needed for Census. Enumerators, who are primary school teachers, are key persons for conducting Census. Conducting Census after Covid could have disrupted primary education immensely,' the Ministry said. It added: 'Countries which conducted Census immediately after Covid-19 faced issues on quality and coverage of Census data.' It further clarified that budgets have never been a constraint for the Census, as funding is always ensured by the Union government.
