New ‘Highway Helper' at Sioux City to provide help to stranded motorists
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) – Car breakdowns can happen at any time and can be a big inconvenience. If you travel Interstate 29 from the South Dakota border to Salix or Highway 20 from Lawton or Highway 75 just south of Hinton, there is now relief if your car breaks down. It's a service called Highway Helper.
'Highway Helper is a safety service patrol and we offer free assistance to the traveling public. For example, if you run out of fuel, if you get into a crash, they can help clean up debris on the roadway to get travelers going to where they need to be going,' said Ashley Hochberger, Program Manager for Highway Helper.
Highway Helper is a private business contracted to the Iowa Department of Transportation. They were already serving four other communities in Iowa, and started serving the Sioux City area this past Wednesday
'There was a demand here. They approached the D.O.T. and we were actually able to kind of look at the data, the traffic volume. What is law enforcement going out there is it the debris or other?' added Hochberger. 'Calls that maybe Highway Helper could assist with so that it frees up law enforcement and then our maintenance personnel. The data proved that it's definitely it warranted Highway Helper here.'

The service runs Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. There are two trucks on the road during those hours and there are four full time drivers employed. They help with everything from jump starting a car, repairing flat tires to providing two gallons of gas. All for free. The goal is to safely get drivers back on the road and on to their destination.
'We get them moving quickly. We keep them safe; we keep them in their cars. We do the work while they stay in their cars safe. Our truck protects them and kicks the traffic over if we have to and then gets them on the road as quick as we can,' said Travis Schooley, Program Manager for Highway Helper.

Debris removal
Traffic control
Checking welfare
Tagging abandoned vehicles
Providing fuel
Providing directions
Jump starting
Motorist transport
Push/pull vehicles
Repair flat tires
Highway Helper is contracted with the Iowa DOT to serve the Sioux City area for three years, then that contract can be renewed.

According to AAA, an average of 245,000 auto insurance claims are filed for hail damage each year, which can make it difficult for Sioux Auto Body to get your vehicle in for repairs. 'All of a sudden you have, you know, 100 people that want their car fixed, so scheduling to be difficult,' said Costa Tsiobanos, the manager of Sioux Auto Body Jake Goodin with Goodin Insurance said the first thing you need to do when your vehicle has been damaged by hail is to file a claim as soon as possible. 'Tow to Go' returns this Memorial Day 'If you do experience any type of damage, the first thing that you want to do is maybe take some photos and or videos, and the next thing would be to contact your insurance agent to set up a claim,' said Jake Goodin. Whether your hail damage repairs are covered by your insurance depends entirely on the type of policy you have. Goodin said liability coverage will not cover for the damage, but comprehensive coverage will. 'It'd be everything but collision is what it is. So, if you had a tree limb fall on your vehicle or if you had a hailstorm, that would be covered under comprehensive coverage' Therefore, Tsiobanos said people typically wait to get the check from their insurance before they get the repairs done to their vehicle. 'That way they can make sure that they get paid in full, you know, if they pay the shop up front, sometimes they can get the run around trying to collect money from the insurance company,' said Tsiobanos. 'Usually it's a catastrophic type of event. When we have large hailstorm that doesn't really impact your rates to file a claim, but, you know, with the amount of storms that we've had, rates tend to go up still,' commented Goodin. 'Typically, if it's pretty small damage, you may want to just have a roofer come out and do an inspection on it to see if it is a very large claim.' ‘Tow to Go' returns this Memorial Day
OMAHA, Neb. (KCAU) — Don't be shocked if you see AAA tow trucks this Memorial Day. AAA will be activating its Tow to Go service for the upcoming holiday. Tow to Go will be available to members and non-members in 11 states from 6 p.m. this Friday through 6 a.m. on May 27. Amongst the 11, two are here in Siouxland, Nebraska and Iowa. The other states include Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, North Carolina, North Dakota, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. 1 hospitalized after crash near Madison, NE
MADISON, Neb. (KCAU) — One person was taken to a hospital in Nebraska after a two vehicle crash near Madison. The Madison County Sheriff's Office said the crash happened Thursday afternoon near the intersection of Highway 81 and Highway 32. First responders found a vehicle blocking two southbound lanes after a Jeep reportedly crashed into the back of a semi-trailer. Authorities said the Jeep tried to avoid the trailer but overturned.
