Preparing your vehicle's insurance for Siouxland's severe weather

Yahoo20-05-2025
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — Siouxland is entering severe weather season, so it's time to make sure you're prepared for potential hail damage.
According to AAA, an average of 245,000 auto insurance claims are filed for hail damage each year, which can make it difficult for Sioux Auto Body to get your vehicle in for repairs.
'All of a sudden you have, you know, 100 people that want their car fixed, so scheduling to be difficult,' said Costa Tsiobanos, the manager of Sioux Auto Body
Jake Goodin with Goodin Insurance said the first thing you need to do when your vehicle has been damaged by hail is to file a claim as soon as possible.
'Tow to Go' returns this Memorial Day
'If you do experience any type of damage, the first thing that you want to do is maybe take some photos and or videos, and the next thing would be to contact your insurance agent to set up a claim,' said Jake Goodin.
Whether your hail damage repairs are covered by your insurance depends entirely on the type of policy you have. Goodin said liability coverage will not cover for the damage, but comprehensive coverage will.
'It'd be everything but collision is what it is. So, if you had a tree limb fall on your vehicle or if you had a hailstorm, that would be covered under comprehensive coverage'
Therefore, Tsiobanos said people typically wait to get the check from their insurance before they get the repairs done to their vehicle.
'That way they can make sure that they get paid in full, you know, if they pay the shop up front, sometimes they can get the run around trying to collect money from the insurance company,' said Tsiobanos.

Filing a claim can potentially increase your insurance premiums, whether it's for your car or house.
'Usually it's a catastrophic type of event. When we have large hailstorm that doesn't really impact your rates to file a claim, but, you know, with the amount of storms that we've had, rates tend to go up still,' commented Goodin. 'Typically, if it's pretty small damage, you may want to just have a roofer come out and do an inspection on it to see if it is a very large claim.'
The best way to protect your car from any hail damage is to store it in a garage or to cover your vehicle in thick blankets.

Real-World Testing Shows EVs Fall Short of Advertised Driving Range

The first batch of electric vehicle (EV) tests under the Australian Automobile Association's (AAA) Real-World Testing Program has revealed a notable gap between advertised and actual driving distance. Five EV models were tested to see how far they could travel on a battery charge, and all recorded shorter driving ranges compared to lab tests—with real-world results falling short by 5 percent and a substantial 23 percent.

Florida gas prices dip more than a dime in a week. Here's what you'll pay at the pump.

There was good news at the pump for Florida drivers last week as gas prices dropped more than a dime. On Monday, drivers were paying an average of $2.94 a gallon for regular unleaded, down from $3.09 a week earlier, according to the AAA auto club. For several months, average prices in Florida had been moving about 15 cents a week in both directions until holding around $3.10 a gallon during the last two weeks. Nationally, the average price Monday was $3.15 a gallon, up a penny from a week earlier. Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said prices could dip before Labor Day. "Oil prices continue to hover in the mid-to-upper $60s (a barrel), and with gasoline demand starting to ease as we head into August, we could see prices gradually decline as we approach Labor Day," De Haan posted online. "That said, this is also the time of year when the tropics begin to stir, so we'll be keeping a close eye on hurricane activity that could disrupt supply and shift the outlook." In Miami-Dade on Monday, the average price for regular unleaded was $2.95 a gallon, down 11 cents from the week before. A month ago, the average was $3.09 and a year ago drivers were paying $3.45 a gallon. In Broward, the average was also $2.95 a gallon, down 16 cents from last week. A month ago, the average was $3.14 and a year ago it was $3.49 a gallon. AAA encourages drivers to combine errands, drive conservatively, remove excess vehicle weight, shop around using the AAA mobile app, and consider paying with cash to avoid credit card surcharges. AAA members can also save by enrolling in gas rewards programs, such as Shell's Fuel Rewards or discounts at Love's Travel Stops. Travelers can find updated gas prices and plan routes using AAA's tools at
