
EasyJet and Ryanair cancel hundreds of flights as chaos affects 300,000 flyers
EasyJet and Ryanair are amongst the airlines that were forced to cancel hundreds of flights due to strike action by French Air Traffic Controllers this week.
Ryanair's CEO Michael O'Leary said that the airline had been forced to cancel over 400 flights due to the disruption, affecting over 70,000 passengers. Meanwhile easyJet had to cancel 274 flights across the two days.
It's estimated that around 1,500 flights in total were cancelled or disrupted by the industrial action, with a quarter of flights at Paris Orly and Paris Charles de Gaulle reported to have been cancelled.
The industrial action on Thursday 3 July and Friday 4 July is believed to have impacted around 300,000 passengers, with routes to airports including Paris, Lyon and Marseille all affected.
The French Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC) asked for a reduction in airport capacity across the country, meaning airlines were left with no choice but to cancel flights.
The UNSA-ICNA union - the second largest union for air traffic controllers in France - is calling for increased staffing levels and a pay rise. The third-largest ATC union, USAC-CGT, also issued a strike notice for Thursday 3 July. The move came on the eve of the school summer holidays in France.
Unfortunately, passengers affected by air traffic control strikes may not be able to get all of their money back, as airlines may be able to claim 'extraordinary circumstances' ie that were out of their control, and therefore you may not be entitled to a full refund.

According to the experts at MoneySuperMarket, you would only be eligible for extra compensation if you are made aware of strikes less than 14 days before the flight. However, that doesn't mean you'll be left fully out of pocket, as travel insurance may be able to cover you depending on when you booked your ticket.
Kara Gammell, who works for the comparison site, explains: "As long as the airline strikes were announced after you booked your trip and your travel insurance, you may be able to claim through your insurer. Always check the terms and conditions of a policy before you buy it as not all travel insurance providers offer cover for airline strikes.
"If your policy includes travel disruption cover though, then it might be possible to claim for disruption or losses incurred as a result of your trip being delayed or cancelled. This may include alternative accommodation, or expenses incurred such as travel, food and drink, and can even stretch to covering the full cost of your holiday should you end up not being able to go.
"However, it is worth noting that not all policies cover this as standard and cover levels, conditions and exclusions can vary between providers, making it important to check with your insurer as your first port of call."

'A stewardess screamed to get off the plane - it was utter chaos': British passengers break bones as they flee Ryanair plane via the WING in terrifying incident after 'false alarm'
Multiple Britons were left with broken bones after being told to rapidly evacuate a delayed Ryanair flight following rumours of a fire onboard. Passengers were screaming as they jumped from the plane's wing, witnesses said. The aircraft was due to fly from Palma de Mallorca Airport to Manchester on Friday night. Eighteen people are believed to have been injured in the incident, with at least two UK citizens reporting broken bones - rather than the 'very minor injuries (ankle sprains, etc.)' initially cited by Ryanair. The airline operator said that the fire alert was a 'false alarm' and claimed that 'passengers were disembarked using the inflatable slides' - despite video footage of travelllers jumping from the wing in their panic to escape. The delayed flight was due to take off late on Friday night before passengers heard a loud bang. Crew told passengers to 'brace' before flight attendants instructed them to start leaving the aircraft. Emergency services were called to the scene at 12:35am and six people were taken to hospital, local authorities said. Savanah, 26, from Whitefield, Greater Manchester, was on the flight with her friend and both their mums, who had been away with their friends. She told the Manchester Evening News that her 57-year-old mum has broken her ankle in three places and is now having surgery, while her friend's mum fractured her elbow, wrist and foot. Savanah said she also hurt her shoulder while her friend hurt her knee. She said: 'We were all just sat on the plane. They made an announcement saying we're going to go in five minutes. 'All of a sudden I heard a bang. It didn't worry me too much. Then everyone was screaming and running. 'The air stewardess screamed, "Get off the plane, leave your belongings." It was utter chaos. 'We got off via the wing. There were no slides. I've hurt my shoulder, my friend hurt her knee. 'Her mum fractured her elbow, wrist and foot. My mum broke her ankle. She's in a cast. 'She's having surgery now. She's done it in in three places.' Doctors said the group are not safe to fly back to Manchester until Monday, according to Savanah. She added: 'My mum lost her phone. They told me I couldn't get it because the plane could set on fire. Even one of the staff had to get treated. 'My mum couldn't walk. My friends mum couldn't walk. We said we needed an ambulance. 'Eventually an ambulance took us to the airport medical centre. It was also chaos in there, one single room.' Warnings of the blaze came just after midnight, with passengers filmed abandoning the plane via one of its wings before jumping to the tarmac. Four ambulances were mobilised and sent to the plane along with airport-based firefighters and the Civil Guard. Regional medical emergency response co-ordinators said 18 people were treated for minor injuries, with six taken to hospital. Three were taken to a private clinic in Palma called Clínica Rotger and the other three to Hospital Quironsalud Palmplanas. A spokesman for a regional government-run emergency response coordination centre confirmed early this morning: 'We received an alert about a fire on a plane on the ground at Palma airport at 00.36am today. The incident happened at Palma Airport in Mallorca in the early hours of Saturday morning 'Four ambulances were sent to the scene which were two basic life support units and two advanced life support unit. 'Eighteen people were injured and received medical assistance of whom six were taken to hospital.' Ryanair have since said the fire alert was a false alarm. A spokesperson for the said: 'This flight from Palma to Manchester discontinued take-off due to a false fire warning light indication. 'Passengers were disembarked using the inflatable slides and returned to the terminal. 'While disembarking, a small number of passengers encountered very minor injuries (ankle sprains, etc.) and crew requested immediate medical assistance. 'To minimise disruption to passengers, we quickly arranged a replacement aircraft to operate this flight, which departed Palma at 07:05 this morning. 'We sincerely apologise to affected passengers for any inconvenience caused.' A confused airport worker was overheard telling a colleague in a walkie-talkie message: 'Do you know the plane has emergency exits?' as frightened travellers were filmed jumping to the tarmac from one of its wings in their rush to get away. He added: 'Plane about to leave from apron ten or eight and now the people are jumping from the wing onto the ground. 'Something's happening, something's happening, they're evacuating the plane. Extra money is paid to workers who take bags off punters who either haven't paid for a cabin bag or people trying to take on a bag too big to be a carry on. An email, seen by The Sunday Times, told Swissport staff about the 'easyJet gate bag revenue incentive' and was sent to workers in November 2023. The scheme was rolled out at Glasgow, Belfast, Birmingham, Jersey, Liverpool and Newcastle Airports. Staff are paid an extra £1.20 for every bag they stop getting on the plane. The email said Swissport crews are 'eligible to receive £1.20 (£1 after tax) for every gate bag taken, effective immediately' and said the policy is 'intended to reward agents doing the right thing'. It was signed off saying: 'Thank you for your ongoing contribution to the success of easyJet'. EasyJet currently allows every passenger to bring on one bag that fits under the seat in front for free. Larger cabin bags have to be booked in advance and cost anything upwards of £5.99. But if punters will also be charged a £48 airport bag fee if they get caught with an oversized bag or if they try to get a bag onboard they haven't paid for. A Swissport spokesperson said: 'We serve our airline customers and apply their policies under terms and conditions for managing their operation. "We're highly professional and our focus is on delivering safe and efficient operations, which we do day in and day out for four million flights per year.' An easyJet spokesperson added: 'EasyJet is focused on ensuring our ground handling partners apply our policies correctly and consistently in fairness to all our customers. 'Our bag policies and options are well understood and we remind customers of this when booking, before they travel and on their boarding pass, which means a very small proportion of customers who don't comply will be charged at the airport.'

Airline's iconic no-nonsense former check-in manager Jane Boulton has been left red-faced as she admitted to fans she missed her own flight this week. Jane shot to fame in the early noughties as ITV cameras followed her and the rest of her easyJet colleagues as they dealt with day-to-day operations of the busy low-cost airline. Boulton, who was based in London Luton, was known for her sharp wit, and less than sympathetic approach to passengers who had missed their flights. However, it appears the former airline worker-turned social media star has been dealt her karma as she told fans she missed her own flight for the very first time. Taking to Instagram on Friday, she said: 'Came to for an interview with Lewis Nicholls yesterday and, guess what guys, for the first time in my life it was not easy because I did not get there on time. 'We got stuck in the most horrific traffic on the way to Gatwick, there was an accident and literally we came off the motorway to queue up for the Gatwick turn off and it took us probably an hour to get from there.' Jane added that her 40-minute usual journey took a whooping two hours as she raced to catch her flight. She continued: 'We missed the check-in by how long? One minute. And as nice as I was... but no, she wasn't having any of it. 'So we missed our little flight with Eastern Airways and had to book on a train, so we should have arrived here at 10 yesterday morning and we got here at about four, three o'clock.' 'So I know how people feel now, and I can honestly say a lot of people out there are probably thinking 'karma'.' The mum-of-three went on to reveal she's staying at the picturesque Cornwall Hotel and Spa while in the tourist hotspot. Fans flooded Jane with comments, with many repeating her iconic phrases from Airline back to here. One wrote: 'Well I'm sorry but a coffee shop does not look like departures (love you Jane).' A second posted: 'Jane, it's a plane not a bus, much love as always though.' 'It is easy if you get here on time as Jane Boulton once told a customer,' joked a third follower. While a fourth penned: 'A coffee shop is not departures!' Jane, Now a married mother-of-three living in South London, famously had to put up with some very angry passengers and previously revealed the truth about Airline. She no longer works in the airline industry and quit the business in 2014. She now runs her own company called Party Paradise UK. The show ended in 2006 and Jane said she still keeps in touch with co-stars Leo Jones and Katrina Leeder. Jane has now gone viral TikTok with clips of her comeback from the show still being sent around. The videos have been viewed more than 26 million times.
