Union Minister Singh highlights Defence investment's catalystic impact on India's economy
Speaking at the Controllers' Conference 2025 of the Defence Accounts Department (DAD), the Minister said, 'We need to be responsible in utilising the Budget as it comes from the hard-earned money of the public. The Budget should be used optimally – for the right purpose, at the right time.'
He also highlighted the fact that the country's Defence Budget is bigger than the GDP of some countries.
Defence Minister Singh pointed out that gone were the days when expenditure in the Defence sector was only considered necessary and never viewed as an economic catalyst. 'Now, it is being seen as a spending which has a multiplier impact on the economy,' he said.
'Earlier, there was no assessment of the economic impact of expenditure on security but things have changed now when investment in re-armament is rising exponentially. We need to pay special attention to Defence economics,' said Defence Minister Singh.
He also praised the measures taken by the Defence Acquisition Council for starting procurement from the Government e-Marketplace (GeM).
He also called for measures to serve veterans better and appreciated steps like introduction of centralised database management.
The conference inaugurated by the Defence Minister will foster discussions on policy dialogue, strategic review and institutional innovation and serve as a platform for shaping the future of India's Defence financial architecture.
The conference, that will be held till July 9, aims to bring together top leadership from DAD, civil services, academia, think-tanks, and stakeholders across the Defence and finance sectors.
'It serves as a vital platform for evaluating challenges, initiating reform, and advancing the role of financial governance in Defence preparedness,' said the Defence Ministry in a statement.

Naidu to discuss Banakacharla project during Delhi visit
1 2 Vijayawada: With the expert appraisal committee raising some objections to the Polavaram-Banakacharla project, chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu is going to Delhi to discuss the issues regarding the project and other matters. In the evening, he is scheduled to participate in a business conference hosted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). Meanwhile, the CM has directed municipal administration and urban development (MAUD) dept officials to consider the demands of outsourcing engineering workers. He also asked the cabinet sub-committee constituted to study the issues pertaining to outsourcing employees to resolve the issues for the benefit of workers. Outsourcing employees in the MAUD are demanding equal pay for equal work, restoration of Andhra Pradesh corporation for outsourced services (APCOS), enhanced ex gratia, increase in minimum wages, and reopening of provident fund accounts. MAUD's engineering wing workers are demanding equal pay to that of regular sanitation workers. The state govt constituted a group of ministers (GoM) to hold talks with the agitating outsourcing workers. The GoM, headed by MAUD minister P Narayana, discussed the workers' demands and the same was explained to the chief minister. Naidu asked Narayana to take a decision which should benefit the workers wherever possible. He approved most of the suggestions made by the GoM and directed them to end the stalemate at the earliest. Narayana said the issue would be resolved very soon as some of them are to be announced with the concurrence of the finance dept. Once the finance dept approves the proposals, an official announcement will be made from the govt side on the demands of outsourcing workers, he added.

During his visit, Deputy Permanent Secretary of State of Iceland, Bergdis Ellertsdottir hosted a dinner for Puri. Air India crash: 'Don't jump to any conclusion', says aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu on AAIB's preliminary report
File photo: Union aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu (Picture credit: ANI) NEW DELHI: Union aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu urged people Saturday not to "jump to any conclusion" regarding the AI-171 crash and "wait for the final (probe) report", his comments coming hours after Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) made public a preliminary report on the investigation of the June 12 Ahmedabad tragedy. "...Let us wait for the final report. These are technical things and that is why we have these investigation agencies. Once they are clear... they are going to submit the final report. At this stage it will be very immature for me to comment on it," the minister said. This is the first time that the black boxes of a crashed aircraft are being decoded in India - at AAIB lab in Delhi. "I would like to appreciate all the efforts they put in to do a very transparent, very mature (and) professional way the investigation has been done (sic). AAIB has followed all international protocols while preparing the report." Promising assistance to AAIB in submitting the final report, Naidu said: "We have to wait for something concrete to emerge. This is a preliminary report right now and from the ministry we are analysing the report, but I think it would be better if we comment on it once the final report is out. Naidu praised AAIB, Indian pilots, and cabin crews, calling them "best" in the world. "Justice has to be done. I know it is a very difficult time for the family members, but from our side, whatever best we can do from the ministry, we are trying to assist," he added. Union junior minister for civil aviation Murlidhar Mohol said: "This is a preliminary report and not final one. It is still under purview of investigation so it would not be right to comment. I request everyone to not arrive at any conclusion till the final report is out."
