Once, Earth was home to diverse human species, not just Homo sapiens. Fossil evidence reveals at least 21 early human species, including Neanderthals and Denisovans, coexisted and even interbred with our ancestors. While the reasons for their extinction remain a mystery, factors like climate change, competition, and interbreeding likely played roles.
Modern humans are often seen as the pinnacle of evolution and the only ones to have grown and developed over centuries. But in evolutionary terms, not long ago, we shared the planet with a number of other human species.
These ancient relatives were not just distant ancestors but our contemporaries, walking the Earth at the same time with our ancestors, even in the same places. They lived, adapted, created tools, even interacted and had children with us.
The picture of human evolution is not a straight line from primitive to modern but rather a tangled tree with many branches, where some of these branches ended in extinction and others merged.
But who are the other types of human species that walked along the ancestors of the Homo Sapiens, and why couldn't they survive till today?
A crowded family tree
For most of human history, Homo sapiens weren't alone. Fossil evidence shows that at least 21 species of early humans once roamed the Earth. These included well-known relatives like Neanderthals, as well as Homo Naledi and Homo Luzonensis, as suggested by recent fossil discoveries.

Among these, some species lasted millions of years, while others were short-lived experiments in survival.
The modern Homo Sapiens didn't just follow other human species; they overlapped with them. Homo sapiens lived alongside Neanderthals and Denisovans, sometimes for thousands of years. In some regions, they shared regional tools and even genes. Interbreeding between Homo sapiens and these relatives left traces in the DNA, especially in populations today outside Africa.
These weren't short-lived events; they were complex interactions between intelligent, adaptable beings trying to survive a shifting world.
In fact, any of these species wasn't alone; they were part of a larger and connected human world.
The mystery of the missing species
Despite advances in archaeology and genetics, many early human species remain a mystery. Some are known only from a few bones or teeth, like the Denisovans, for example, whose full skeleton has not been found till date.
Instead, their story is put together from fragments and DNA. Scientists continue to debate how many species truly existed, since definitions of "species" can vary. Did they look different enough? Could they have kids together? These uncertainties mean the real number of human species might be far higher than 21.
Why could only one species make it to today?
The reasons aren't fully clear. It could be that they were more adaptable, better at cooperating, or just luckier. Climate change, competition for resources, and even disease may have wiped out other human species. Some were already disappearing when we arrived. Others may have blended into our gene pool through interbreeding. But there is one certainty that survival wasn't guaranteed; Homo Sapiens' today came at the cost of other lost human lineages.

1 2 Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday expressed concern over the fact that only 26% of the farmers apply scientific approach in carrying out farming activities in UP which was otherwise bestowed with natural conditions suitable for agriculture and agricultural research. Addressing a gathering at the national workshop on 'Vikshit Krishi, Viksit UP', organised by UP Council for Agriculture Research (UPCAR) on its 36th foundation day, Yogi said that the productivity of agriculture can potentially be increased by three times of what exists at present. UP accounts for 11% of the total agricultural land and 20% of the total food grain produced in the country. Yogi said that improvement in productivity can be increased only through consistent efforts to boost scientific research and its robust application in the field. "We have swathes of fertile agricultural land, sufficient water resources irrigating almost 86% of the total area. Yet the productivity is low," he said, adding that only those states and countries have progressed which focused on research and development. UP, he said, not only has the potential to feed the country but the whole world. Yogi said that PM Narendra Modi has fixed a target of turning India into a developed country by 2027 having an economy of the size of USD 30 trillion. "But for this the states will have to play their roles. UP will have to become a Vikshit Pradesh. And for this we have to look for all possible opportunities to do so," he said, affirming that the country was moving steadily ahead in achieving the target of becoming a USD 5 trillion economy. Yogi said that the state govt has fixed the target of making UP a USD 1 trillion economy by 2029. He said that the state has conceptualised a detailed plan covering all key sectors including agriculture and infrastructure which would usher in development. "At the same time, we need to have short term goals before achieving the target of becoming a developed economy by 2047," he said, exhorting agriculture universities and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) to focus in that direction. The CM asked the agriculture research institutes and universities to step up efforts to arrest migration of farmers from agricultural activities. At the same time, he said, more work was required to be done for improvement in seed variety to boost production.

Nagpur: Our brain has plastic. Yes, you read it right. Recent research shows that microplastics are entering the human brain, and the amount is rapidly increasing. Fruits are not plastic-free while plastic particles have been found in fish we eat, and even the water we drink. This perhaps explains the presence of plastic particles in the human brain, doctors say. Highlighting a major concern during World Brain Week, neurologists shared shocking data: A study comparing brains of people who died in 2016 with those who died in 2024 found 50% rise in plastic particles in the vital organ. "These findings are alarming. They show that our lifestyle changes over just a few years are impacting our brain," said Padma Shri Dr Chandrashekhar Meshram, senior neurologist from Nagpur and Trustee of the World Federation of Neurology (WFN). Dr Meshram shared research by Alexander Nihart on microplastics in deceased human brains published in the March edition of Nature Medicine journal. "Microplastics are so tiny in size that they can enter our body through food, water, air, and even skin contact. They may trigger inflammation and even stroke," said Dr Meshram. "Out of 12 types of plastic polymers found in the brain, polyethylene — used in bottles and packaging — was the most common," said professor Raidh Gouider, former WFN Trustee from Tunisia. He added, "Plastics now make up about 0.5% of brain weight. That's roughly 7 grams of micro and nano plastics in our brain over a lifetime." When asked if the brain can adapt naturally to this plastic, professor Jacques Reid, former chair of the Environmental Neurology Group, WFN, shared an interesting take. "The human brain is an extraordinary organ that has adapted over centuries to changing environments, including new dietary exposures," he said. "But adaptation has its limits. The rise in plastic exposure should not be taken lightly. We must act now to protect both our environment and our brain health," he added.
