K-pop group once dubbed ‘female BTS' hit hiatus at career peak, dragged into controversy with future uncertain

NewJeans debuted in July 2022, after Le Sserafim (HYBE's first girl group), but their rise was nothing short of meteoric. The girls broke away from the traditional, cute, nation's crush image of female idols to a bold, aesthetically-driven, girl-next-door vibe. Their early releases like Attention and Hype Boy turned into youth anthems. Their debut EP New Jeans topped charts in no time, while Ditto achieved a 'Perfect All-Kill' (meaning it topped all major Korean charts simultaneously and stayed there for days). OMG and Super Shy became insanely famous overseas.
In such a short time, NewJeans bagged multiple Daesang awards (one of the highest honours in South Korea) at shows like the Golden Disc Awards, Melon Music Awards, and MAMA Awards. By 2023, they became HYBE's richest female rookie group, with endorsements falling into their lap like cake. Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci, Armani, Celine, Burberry, YSL, Dior, Omega, nearly every luxury brand that once had BTS or BLACKPINK, came calling. Even homegrown giants like Samsung got on board. With their growing influence, they were named Honorary Ambassadors for the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, for Seoul Fashion Week, and bagged multiple government-backed titles, carving their place as South Korea's next big soft power.

BTS made history with groundbreaking Billboard Music Awards performances, cracking open K-pop's presence on American prime-time. NewJeans, not far behind, made their own BBMA debut in 2023, a huge deal for a group this new. They were even hailed as 'Billboard performers.' But since April 2024, things have started slipping downhill.
In 2024, HYBE initiated an audit of ADOR and, in their complaint, alleged that CEO Min Hee Jin was trying to 'poach' NewJeans away from HYBE while secretly planning to establish an independent label. NewJeans sided with Min Hee Jin. The then-CEO hit back, accusing HYBE and its subsidiaries of plagiarism, mistreatment, and sabotaging ADOR's creative independence. Even the members' parents got embroiled in the drama.
After Min Hee Jin was sacked from her position, the quintet tried to terminate their contracts and go independent. But ADOR claimed the contracts were still valid. Despite that, NewJeans pushed back, they halted all group activities and even tried to drop music on their own. But ADOR dragged them to court and filed injunctions to stop the members from pursuing anything outside the label. NewJeans lost. They didn't file for appeal. As per the latest court ruling, the group has been ordered to pause all independent activities and stick with ADOR. While other legal battles are still raging on, the group remains on hiatus. What's worse, the once-overwhelming public support for the girls has started to dip. If the court ends up ruling that NewJeans breached their contracts, they could be hit with heavy penalties, including brands pulling out of deals.

Are BTS clips ruining our movie viewing experience?
Photos of (L-R) Emily Blunt, Anne Hathaway & Meryl Streep have flooded social media from The Devil Wears Prada 2 shoot in NYC In 2006, The Devil Wears Prada captivated audiences with its fresh, unspoiled charm. Now, as The Devil Wears Prada 2 shoots in New York, set photos of Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt are already flooding social media. This has prompted fans on X to lament the loss of surprise. What was once a stylish spectacle unveiled in the theatre is now pre-digested content. This flood of behind-the-scenes (BTS) material raises a larger question: is the magic of cinema being eroded by its own marketing machine? The chroma key problem Visual-effects-heavy films also suffer from overexposure. Dune (2021) used sand-colored 'sandscreens' instead of green to better match Arrakis's lighting. Deadpool & Wolverine relied on blue screens for multiverse sequences. Despite Marvel's usual misdirection, leaks of green screen footage dulled the impact of big reveals. Fans on social media stress that the illusion of epic scale can't survive if audiences have already seen the BTS BTS snap from Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning BTS or on-screen magic: What's more important? 'It's cool to know that Tom Cruise did the stunts himself' In Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Tom Cruise performed 16 parachute jumps. But a BTS featurette released pre-film spoiled the moment for many. 'It's not cool because it's a surprise — it's cool because he's actually doing the stunt,' said one Redditor, though others felt the reveal deepened their appreciation. The illusion of drama unraveled Emotional peaks are dulled by early reveals. Why is BLACKPINK Rosé's 2022 selfie with Gal Gadot going viral now? Old pic resurfaces amid boycott backlash
Fanwars are nothing new in K-pop, but since the Israeli-Palestinian conflict began, even the smallest actions by idols -what they wear, drink, or post - have sparked outrage. BLACKPINK's Rosé is now under renewed scrutiny as fans resurface her 2022 photo with Gal Gadot, questioning why she's escaped backlash while others haven't. The controversy reignited after BTS' Jungkook appeared in a post-workout photo shared by his trainer, Ma Sun Ho. While most fans admired his new chest tattoo, some zoomed in on the Starbucks cup in his hand - leading to online uproar. This sparked fresh fanwars, with many calling out the double standards in how BTS and BLACKPINK idols are treated. Are Gal Gadot and Rosé associated? BLACKPINK's Rosé and Hollywood star Gal Gadot crossed paths at the Tiffany & Co. event in June 2022. The moment went viral when Gadot posted a glowing selfie with Rosé, calling her "sweet @roses_are_rosie" on her Instagram story - instantly sending fans into a frenzy. What was once celebrated as a charming celebrity crossover has now become a flashpoint. With Gadot facing mounting backlash over her political stance, Rosé is being dragged into the fire. The resurgence of the photo isn't due to any new development between the two - but because it's being repurposed in the middle of a heated boycott against Gadot, triggered by her vocal support for Israel. BLACKPINK's Rosé faces online backlash That backlash, which began in 2024 and intensified into 2025, has turned every past association of Gadot into ammunition - including this seemingly innocent selfie. Now, the resurfaced image has reignited online chaos. K-pop fans are questioning why Rosé is linked to such a polarizing figure. Why is no one cancelling Blackpink's Rosé for associating herself with Gal Gadot, an known IDF soldier who has participated in the killing and genocide of Palestinians. Or do you all only care about palestine when it comes to using it for your own benefit? the day Rosé proudly posed with Gal Gadot… a woman who served in the IDF — no one cared or tried to 'cancel' her because it's Rosé. just a reminder that everything didn't start on october 7, 2023… ROSÉ is besties with gal gadot— gal gadot is actively supporting the genocide of palestinians, blood on her hands! she was a former IOF (israeli occupation force) soldier. everyone knows this! but no one will bat an eye because it's blackpink. However, her fans argue that she's being unfairly targeted and shouldn't even be brought into the conversation, as the two met in 2022 - long before the boycotts began. Others, however, counter that the conflict between the two countries didn't start on October 7, 2023, but has been ongoing for years. ROSÉ new crime update: reposting a story that gal gadot posted 2736468 years ago at a randm event?? #freerosé More about BLACKPINK's Rosé At the moment, the idol is occupied with her group's ongoing world tour, DEADLINE, which kicked off on July 5, 2025, at Goyang Stadium in South Korea. The tour is set to wrap up on January 25, 2026, at Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong. Their next stop is on August 9 at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain.
