Still working on angle and runup for Worlds, Annu Rani claims title amid huge cheers

Annu Rani (Pic credit: Sanjib Das) BHUBANESWAR: Annu Rani is eyeing her fifth appearance at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo next month, and there was no better way to prepare for it than winning the title at the World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze level meet at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Sunday. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Coming into the tournament having won the title last week at the 8th International Wieslaw Maniak Memorial meet in Szczecin, Poland, with a throw of 62.59m – her first 60m-plus throw in over a year – she was quite confident of delivering and did not disappoint. She started with 52.74m and then followed it up with throws of 58.65m and 58.39m. But with the crowd cheering her on, she dug deep into her reserves and delivered a throw of 62.01m that helped her finish on top of the leaderboard. Poll Which event do you think Annu Rani should focus on to maximize her chances of success? Javelin Technique Strength Training Mental Preparation All of the Above In the remaining two attempts, she tried hard to hit the automatic World qualifying mark of 64m but fell short. However, she did cross the 60m-mark once again in her fifth attempt with a throw of 61.01m. As for her last throw, it read 59.02m. Speaking about her performance, she sounded more than pleased and said, 'After travelling back from Poland, there was a lot fatigue but I'm really happy that despite that I was able to cross the 60m-mark twice.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This new air conditioner cools down a room in just seconds News of the Discovery Undo Irrespective of her current showing, the Asian Games gold medallist is well aware that she will need to work on two major areas to better her best performance, which currently stands at 63.82m. 'Whenever I throw the javelin, it's usually at a high angle so I will have to keep it front on. The other area is my runup. I will have to make it fast and smooth,' said Rani, who trained in Europe for about three weeks to better prepare ahead of the Worlds. While it was a fruitful outing, she sadly didn't have her coach – Sergey Makarov of Russia – by her side because of visa issues. However, she didn't let it affect her and concentrated on her improvement. However, her coach was here in Bhubaneswar and made sure his pupil gave her best. He kept speaking with her in between the throws and it seemed to make all the difference. 'I was getting a bit aggressive and wasn't concentrating on the throws so he kept telling me to calm down and relax,' added Rani, who had also trained beside German javelin thrower Johannes Vetter for a while. It was natural for her to get a bit worked up as the packed stadium shouted their lungs out all throughout her event. 'I've never enjoyed competing as much as I did here. At times, I was feeling a bit of pressure but I got a lot of love from all the people and that helped me in the end,' said the 32-year-old. And this performance has now given her motivation to do even better at the Worlds, where she believes she can make throws of 64m or even 65m. She, however, is unlikely to compete at the inter-state nationals to get some much-required rest ahead of the big event in Sept. This after all has been quite a hectic season for her. Besides winning the title in Poland, she also competed at Taiwan Athletics Open and won with a throw of 56.82m. However, she just missed the podium during the Asian Athletics Championships despite throwing 58.30m. Hopefully, the rest over the next few weeks will now help her to be in prime form ahead of the Tokyo meet. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

2027 ODI World Cup: Will Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma feature? Ex-selector's blunt take – ‘Time doesn't wait for anybody'

Dubai: India's Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final cricket match between India and New Zealand, in Dubai, UAE. (PTI Photo/Arun Sharma) Former India opener and ex-selector Devang Gandhi believes the younger crop has shown they are ready for all challenges, casting doubt on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's ODI futures. 'How will you make players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Sai Sudharsan, among others, sit out when they have shown how well they can adapt? The bigger transition is from T20s to Tests. Once a player has done well in Test cricket and has the power game, ODIs should come easier to them. It is very important that the selectors and the team management sit together and take a call,' Gandhi told TOI. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Gandhi stressed that regular game-time is crucial and urged the selectors to honestly assess whether Virat and Rohit can remain at their peak over the next two years. 'If, say, in a year's time, we come to a situation where one of them is not firing and we need a replacement, the team management may not have enough time to prepare a player for the job,' Gandhi said. The captaincy question is equally important, and the selectors must make a decision. Gill has already proven himself ready to lead in Tests and, given his current form, is arguably India's best ODI batsman, averaging 59.04 with a strike rate of 99.56. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo His performances have earned him the team's respect, making the ODI captaincy a natural fit. Poll Should Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli continue playing ODIs? Yes, they should continue No, it's time for younger players Only if they perform well Undecided 'There's absolutely no doubt about the contribution of Rohit and Virat. But time doesn't wait for anybody,' Gandhi added. With Rohit and Virat — who retired from T20Is in 2024 and stepped away from Test cricket earlier this year — the speculation about their ODI future has been rife. For now, though, it appears they may give one final push to the format they dominated for over 15 years. If they wish to extend their ODI careers beyond October, both may need to feature in domestic one-day competitions like the Vijay Hazare Trophy in December, as well as the 'A' series against Australia and South Africa, in addition to international fixtures. At this stage of their careers, however, there remains uncertainty over whether these legends would be willing to endure the grind of domestic one-day cricket in far-flung venues once again. Continental Tour: Animesh Kujur exerts himself to emerge 200m winner; Murali Sreeshankar, Shaili Singh too shine in respective events

Animesh Kujur (Pic credit: Sanjib Das) BHUBANESWAR: After what has been a long and gruelling season, Animesh Kujur got pushed and then pushed himself to deliver in front of a packed stadium to win the 200m title ahead of South Korea's KO Seunghwan in a close race at the World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze level meet at Kalinga Stadium here on Sunday. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The South Korean, who has a personal best of 20.45 seconds, kept pushing Kujur throughout the race but India's national record holder in 100 and 200m prevailed in 20.77 seconds. Seunghwan came second in 20.95 seconds while Ragul Kumar finished third in 21.17 seconds. Asked how he managed to finally win it, Kujur said, 'My coach always tells me to maintain my form in the final stretch. It is the last 50m where most athletes lose their form. However, I was able to hold it as the coach said and win it.' Poll Do you think Animesh Kujur can break his personal best soon? Yes, definitely Maybe, if he stays healthy No, he might struggle While he did claim the title, the timing was nowhere close to PB of 20.32 seconds. He did sound a tad disappointed but now his focus is on giving his best at the Worlds for which he will qualify on the back of the ranking points. Moreover, what might have hindered his performance on the night is the fact that he caught a mild cold after coming back from Europe. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Treatment That Might Help You Against Back Pain! Back Pain Treatment | Search Ads Undo Hopefully, he will be able to take care of it ahead of the Inter-state meet where he will have to perform in similar weather conditions. He however did enjoy competing in front of the huge crowd but did feel some pressure too. 'I didn't exert too much during the heats because I was just aiming to qualify. However, I was under a bit of pressure to perform in the final in front of such a big crowd and in my home track,' said Kujur, who did start the 100m heats in the morning but did not finish. Meanwhile, Murali Sreeshankar saved his best for the last as he won the long jump title with a final leap of 8.13m, which was his season's best. As a result, Shahnavaz Khan was left heartbroken after he had managed to take the lead following his fourth jump of 8.04m, which was also his PB. Lokesh Sathyanathan meanwhile came third with a leap of 7.85m. Among the other big names who won as expected in the men's section were Mohammad Afsal in men's 800m with a time of 1:46.60 and Abdulla Aboobacker, who grabbed the men's triple jump title with a leap of 16.53m. Among the women, Shaili Singh won the long jump with an effort of 6.28m, Annu Rani took the javelin title with a throw of 62.01m and Abinaya Rajarajan grabbed the top spot in 100m in 11.57 seconds. However, the big surprise was Sachin Yadav's failure in the men's javelin as failed to cross the 80m-mark. 22-year-old Rumesh Tharanga from Sri Lanka walked away with the honour with a throw of 86.50m. It wasn't only his PB but he also bettered the World Athletics automatic qualification mark of 85.50m. India's Shivam Lohakare finished second with 80.73m while Sumedha Ranasinghe, also from Sri Lanka, settled for third spot with 80.65m. As expected, Malaysia's Muhd Azeem Fahmi won the men's 100m title in 10.35s. But the other shock came in the very end as India's 4x400m relay team was beaten by a young Sri Lankan quartet in a photo finish. Ramraj twins disappoint: It wasn't a great outing for the Ramraj twins as Vithya was disqualified from the 400m event after a false start while her sister Nithya competing in the 100m hurdles crashed with the third-last hurdle and failed to finish the race. At that moment, she was leading the race, but the crash left her reeling in pain on the track. Vithya confirmed that her sister had a fracture on the left leg as the duo left for the hospital with their coach Nehpal Singh to get an MRI scan.
