Geno Smith aims to bring stability and firepower to Raiders' struggling offense

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — The Raiders have been searching at quarterback since a messy divorce late in the 2022 season ended Derek Carr's nine-year reign.
And even Carr's tenure came up short of expectations with the team making the playoffs just twice.
Now the Raiders are counting on veteran Geno Smith to provide much-needed stability and add punch to an offense among the NFL's worst last season. But, he isn't expected to do it by himself in Las Vegas.
He has two potentially dynamic offensive weapons in tight end Brock Bowers and running back Ashton Jeanty, as well as wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, who comes off his first 1,000-yard season. All three are 28 and younger, and Smith is closing in on 35 as he enters his 12th season.
'In this league, every day you got to prove yourself, not only to your guys but to the rest of the league,' Smith said. "So for me, when you're coming to a new team, you got to set the standard, set the example, and it's through hard work. I wanted to make sure that my guys know that I was going to be here 100% of the time, going to put all the work in, going to maximize our resources and just really put our best foot forward.
"I'm not a big talker. I just want guys to kind of follow me through example, and I just try to push myself, push the guys and let the rest handle itself.'
It may be a new city and a new group of teammates for Smith, but there is a sense of familiarity as he goes back to work for coach Pete Carroll. His career was in limbo when Carroll signed him in 2019 to join Seattle.
He became the starter in 2022 and led the NFL that season by completing 69.8% of his passes while throwing for 4,282 yards and 30 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. He was named the AP Comeback Player of the Year, and the Seahawks had winning records in all three seasons with Smith at the controls.
Smith threw for 4,320 yards and 21 touchdowns with 15 interceptions last season, but he failed to reach an agreement to stay in Seattle. The Raiders acquired him in a March 7 trade in which they sent back a third-round draft pick.
The two-time Pro Bowl quarterback then signed a two-year, $75 million extension that takes him through the 2027 season. Smith said at his introductory news conference that he had 'unfinished business,' given the way his time ended in Seattle.
'He's such an all-in guy that there's no question what his commitment is and his conviction, and so that just helps the message (get) embedded even more so,' Carroll said. 'It's why he's so valuable to us.'
Smith is a major reason why the Raiders have genuine hope they can improve an offense that last season ranked 29th in scoring and 27th in yardage.
Having Bowers and Jeanty in the lineup are two other notable reasons for such optimism.
Bowers was second in AP Offensive Rookie of the Year voting last season to Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels. Bowers set an NFL rookie record with 112 catches for a first-year mark for a tight end with 1,194 yards receiving and was named to the AP All-Pro team.
'He's one of the better tight ends in the NFL,' Smith said. "I can't give him the ball enough. I feel bad every time I don't throw him the ball. So I'm just trying to make sure that I'm maximizing his ability, his talent, because that's going to help our team.'
Jeanty is expected to be the Raiders' next Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate, and in fact is the favorite, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. Las Vegas took him sixth in this year's draft after Jeanty led the nation with 2,601 yards and 29 touchdowns rushing to finish second in the Heisman Trophy voting.
'Ashton is a smooth running back out of the backfield,' Smith said. 'We've seen what he can do against contact and breaking tackles. The thing that's really impressing me is his ability to catch out of the backfield. He's a real natural in that aspect.'
The NFL, in the end, is a quarterback-driven league, and the onus ultimately will be on Smith to make all the pieces work in Chip Kelly's offense.
The Raiders have been searching for such a quarterback. Maybe Smith is the answer.
'Geno is a hell of a quarterback," defensive end Maxx Crosby said. 'He's another guy that gets slept on for some reason, but Geno can play and he's super competitive. Getting to see him and go against him every single day has been an awesome experience so far.'

Chargers offensive lineman Rashawn Slater carted off with apparent leg injury

A quiet hush fell over the Chargers' facility during Thursday's practice after one of the team's biggest stars went down with an injury. Rashawn Slater — the Chargers' All-Pro left tackle who became the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history last month — sustained an apparent left leg injury during team drills. On the play, edge rusher Tuli Tuipulotu bull-rushed Slater, driving him backward. As Slater planted his left foot, he collapsed to the ground and immediately grabbed his leg. He was down for several minutes before trainers and teammates helped him onto a cart. Slater appeared visibly distraught — throwing his helmet, slamming his hand on the cart and burying his face in his hands. Several teammates came over to console him before he left the field. 'I didn't really see anything — I kind of just turned around and boom,' Tuipulotu said of the play. 'We're praying for him. Man, we hope he's doing well.' Slater signed a four-year, $114-million contract extension on July 27 that included $92 million guaranteed. The guaranteed amount is the most ever for an NFL offensive lineman. His injury comes as the Chargers are already dealing with depth concerns along the line, with Mekhi Becton being sidelined since July 28 with an undisclosed injury. It's unclear how much time Slater will miss, but his absence prompted an immediate reshuffling. Joe Alt slid over to left tackle for the remainder of practice. Trey Pipkins III subbed in at right tackle — where he started in 2022 and 2023 — before spending most of last season at right guard, starting 15 games. Should Slater miss significant time, Alt likely will be Justin Herbert's blindside protector. Vontaze Burfict joins UNLV staff as defensive analyst

Vontaze Burfict is getting back in the game, albeit at the college level. Via Justin Williams of Burfict has joined UNLV's staff as a defensive analyst. Burfict is working under interim defensive coordinator Paul Guenther, who was Burfict's longtime linebackers position coach and coordinator with the Bengals. Burfict also played under Guenther with the Raiders in 2019. That was the last season of Burfict's career, as he was suspended after a helmet-to-helmet hit on Colts tight end Jack Doyle in the Raiders' fourth game of the season. While Burfict was reinstated at the end of the season, he went unsigned in free agency. Burfict received his 12-game suspension for repeated violations of player safety, including personal fouls and illegal hits. According to Sportrac, Burfict had lost $5.3 million due to fines and suspensions from 2013-2019. Burfict entered the league in 2012 as an undrafted free agent out of Arizona State. He appeared in 79 games with 77 starts over the course of his career, making one Pro Bowl in 2013.

Packers RB MarShawn Lloyd remaining upbeat as he continues to deal with injuries

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Green Bay Packers running back MarShawn Lloyd says he has leaned on his faith as he deals with the multiple injuries that have kept him off the field for much of his NFL career. That faith is being tested once again. The 2024 third-round pick from Southern California played just one game and carried the ball only six times as a rookie due to a variety of injuries. Now he's dealing with a groin issue that leaves him uncertain about when he will be cleared to practice again. 'Eventually these things will come across and I'll be able to be exactly who I know I can be,' Lloyd said Thursday. 'It will come soon, so I'm excited about it. I've got to keep staying in my faith, and everything's going to roll out the right way.' The Packers want Lloyd and Emanuel Wilson, whose 502 yards rushing last season ranked second on the team, to provide depth behind Pro Bowl running back Josh Jacobs. Wilson has his own issues in dealing with a bone bruise in his knee as the Packers prepare for their preseason opener Saturday against the New York Jets. During his rookie year, Lloyd dealt with injuries to his hamstring and ankle that kept him off the field. He seemed close to coming off injured reserve in November until he started feeling pain in his abdomen, got it checked out and discovered he had appendicitis. The lessons Lloyd learned during that rookie season have prepared him for this latest setback. Lloyd has also benefited from the set up of the Packers' new locker room, which has him right next to three-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Kenny Clark. 'A lot of things I've been going through haven't been long-term things,' Lloyd said. 'I've just got to incorporate different things into my system. Having a guy like Kenny Clark, he told me early in his career, he struggled with some little soft-tissue stuff, so I've just been leaning on him a lot, listening to what he's saying, Pilates, yoga, just different things like that.' Lloyd's locker also puts him near Jacobs and All-Pro safety Xavier McKinney. Lloyd says he often reaches out to them for advice as well as learns more about his body and discovers what it's going to take to stay healthy. Jacobs says Lloyd remains in high spirits. 'We're seeing him out there every day running and cutting,' Jacobs said. 'He feels good. I think that's the biggest thing for him. And I think mentally he's in a way better place than he was last year. He's understanding what it is and what it takes to play in this league, and he understands there's sometimes hiccups in the road. We're there for him whenever he feels like the pressure might be too much or what not. I think he's going to be all right.' ___ AP NFL:
