Georgia football 2025 running backs preview
Georgia rushed for just 124.4 yards per game last season, which ranked second-to-last in the SEC. Georgia was able to establish the run twice against Texas, who had one of the top defenses in the country, but overall it was a disappointing season for the Georgia run game. The Dawgs lost four of their five starting offensive linemen from a season ago, so Georgia has had to re-tool up front.
In 2025, Georgia's rushing attack will be even more crucial. The Bulldogs need to have a balanced attack for projected first-year starter Gunner Stockton.
The Bulldogs return nearly 1,000 yards in rushing production from 2024. Projected starting running back Nate Frazier, a third-team All-SEC pick, figures to be Georgia's lead back this fall. Frazier posted 671 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns on 133 carries in 2025.
Georgia's second leading returning rusher is actually wide receiver Dillon Bell, who had nine carries for 107 yards and a touchdown in 2024. Bell could play a larger role for Georgia's backfield in 2025 like he did in 2023.
The Bulldogs return running back Cash Jones, but Jones was more effective as a pass catcher. In 2024, Jones was UGA's top receiving running back with 24 receptions for 275 yards and four touchdowns. As a freshman, Nate Frazier posted 12 receptions for 85 yards. We project Frazier's receiving production to significantly improve in 2025.
Georgia had a busy spring
This spring, Georgia running back Branson Robinson (25 carries for 73 yards and three touchdowns) transferred to Georgia State in the spring after an injury-filled 2024 season. Robinson's power running will be missed, but he struggled to stay healthy during his time at UGA.
To solidify the backfield, Georgia added Illinois transfer Josh McCray, who has missed the start of fall camp. McCray posted a team-high 117 carries, 609 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns (No. 9 in the Big Ten/tied) in 2024. The 6-foot-1, 235-pound bruiser has a physical running style and is tough to bring down on first contact. McCray does not have elite speed, but runs with toughness and is excellent in between the tackles.
He posted 114 rushing yards on 13 carries and two rushing touchdowns in Illinois' bowl win over South Carolina last season. McCray, a senior, finished 2024 with 13 receptions for 116 yards and a touchdown. He's more of a rushing threat than a pass catcher, but still has to be accounted for in the passing game.
Who else factors in at running back for Georgia?
Georgia returns running back Roderick Robinson (four carries for three yards), who missed almost the entire year with an injury. As a true freshman in 2023, Robinson recorded 24 carries for 196 yards and two touchdowns. If healthy, Robinson could be UGA's No. 2 running back.
UGA also returns redshirt freshman Chauncey Bowers (16 carries for 58 yards) and sophomore Dwight Phillips (six carries for 33 yards and a touchdown). Lastly, Georgia signed three-star running back Bo Walker (No. 48 running back in the country).
Another factor for the running game is quarterback Gunner Stockton, who has flashed mobility. He posted a negative rushing total in 2024, but the eye test shows he is a little more mobile than Carson Beck. Still, we don't expect to see a ton of designed quarterback runs for Stockton, but he could contribute positively to the rushing attack.

Who is the best fantasy football RB 2025? Bijan Robinson, Jahmyr Gibbs lead top tier
Who is the best fantasy football RB 2025? Bijan Robinson, Jahmyr Gibbs lead top tier originally appeared on The Sporting News Running back, even with the surge of PPR leagues, remains the most important position in fantasy football. The RB drop-off happens quickly. Grabbing not just a top guy, but the top overall RB is always a huge advantage. This season, four names truly qualify for being in this discussion: two young stars and two vets who have been the RB1 before. Keep reading as we decide which running back to take first at his position in 2025 fantasy football drafts. Who's the best fantasy RB in 2025? Bijan Robinson, Atlanta Falcons The Falcons finally figured out how to use Robinson properly last season. It took long enough. After the first five weeks of the 2024 season, the Atlanta coaching staff must've had an epiphany about how good Robinson really was. Robinson saw his touches grow from 17 in Weeks 1-5, to 23.4 per game from Weeks 6-18. He averaged 120.9 scrimmage yards per game and was the RB1 in fantasy points per game. Robinson saw a higher target share and route share in those weeks as well. There is no reason the Falcons saw that sort of production from Robinson and decided to take volume away. After all, there is close to no competition for that backfield with just Tyler Allgeier, who can be annoying at the goal line for Robinson owners but is more of a handcuff type. After you read about this top RB tier, click to see our . Jahmyr Gibbs, Detroit Lions Gibbs absolutely exploded last year for fantasy football. He was the RB2 in fantasy points per game and finished as the overall RB3 in 2024. It's strange the way people talk about the David Montgomery injury as it relates to Gibbs' production. Sure, when Montgomery was injured in the final three weeks of the season, Gibbs went nuclear and averaged 32.6 fantasy points per game. However, even with Montgomery healthy and as the starter from Weeks 1-15, Gibbs already had been averaging 18.8 fantasy points per game (fantasy RB4). This season, Gibbs is the starter and is expected to take control of this offense. Montgomery will still be there and taking touches, but we've already established Gibbs has no problem producing alongside Montgomery. DOMINATE YOUR DRAFT: Christian McCaffrey, San Francisco 49ers Let's just start with the obvious: If McCaffrey is healthy all season, he'll be the RB3 or better in fantasy football. But it's a big if, and managers are rightfully terrified of drafting an injury-riddled, 29-year-old RB. To be fair, his upside speaks for itself: In the last five seasons where CMC played at least 16 games, his lowest finish came as the RB10 his rookie year. The other four seasons he finished RB2 in 2018, RB1 in 2019, RB2 in 2022, and RB1 in 2023. At the moment, McCraffrey is one of the only healthy RBs in San Francisco. With the easiest schedule in the league, CMC will feast ... if he's on the field. MORE: Saquon Barkley, Philadelphia Eagles Barkley's 2024 season was nothing short of historic. He rushed for 2,005 yards (led the NFL) off 345 carries (led the NFL) with 13 rushing touchdowns, while adding 33-278-2 as a receiver. 'Regression' is an understatement when it comes to Barkley's 2025 outlook. Barkley had the third-most touches (482) of any RB in the 21st century. In the last 20 seasons, players who registered 400-plus touches saw a 30% regression the following year. We've seen player like Derrick Henry or CMC get hurt following seasons with such high usage. This does not mean it will happen to Barkley, but the regression seems inevitable. WARNING: Avoid these The decision: Who is the best fantasy RB in 2025? It's Bijan Robinson's season to prove how elite he really is. We all saw the Falcons coaching staff finally begin to use Robinson correctly and his fantasy output was amazing. This season you have a potential dynamic offense with Michael Penix Jr. at QB and this only means more opportunities for Robinson to succeed. If not for Robinson, Gibbs would be the top overall RB in 2025. Robinsons volume should be much better than Gibbs, but Gibbs' big play ability gives him more upside. Protect your back(s)! Use our .

How to win the FedEx Cup has never been more clear. The significance has never been more confusing
ATLANTA (AP) — How to win the FedEx Cup has never been more clear. Scottie Scheffler leads a 30-man field at the Tour Championship. They play 72 holes at East Lake and whoever has the lowest score gets $10 million in official prize money, an official victory and world ranking points. Except for the big boost in prize money, it's no different from how the Tour Championship was before words like 'points' and 'playoffs' entered the golf vernacular. And that's why the significance of winning the FedEx Cup has never been more confusing. Scheffler has had the best season. He has twice as many FedEx Cup points as Rory McIlroy, twice as many majors (2-1) and two more wins. But now the FedEx Cup — described by the PGA Tour as a 'season-long points competition' — comes down to one tournament where everyone starts on equal ground. Can it be a season-long competition if the winner Sunday hadn't won a tournament all year? 'Yeah, you're definitely the FedEx Cup champion,' said Patrick Cantlay, who hasn't won a tournament all year. 'I think at this point, if you played a whole year and get into the Tour Championship with the 30 best guys who have played the best all year, and you beat them that week with everything on the line, that's a huge accomplishment.' It's about getting to East Lake. And then it's about one good week, just like Viktor Hovland had at the Valspar Championship, like Chris Gotterup had at the Scottish Open. Both are outside the top 20 in the FedEx Cup, happy and deserving to be at East Lake. Twelve players at East Lake did well enough to get here without winning. If they win, are they the season-long FedEx Cup champion? Even with a half-dozen changes to the postseason format dating to 2007, the best player didn't always win the FedEx Cup. McIlroy won two majors and a World Golf Championship in 2014 and didn't win it. The three times he did win the FedEx Cup, McIlroy was never at the top of the points list throughout the entire postseason until he delivered the goods at East Lake. Scheffler was among those adamant about changing from 'starting strokes,' which gave the No. 1 seed — him each of the last three years — at least a two-shot lead over the field before the tournament started. It still took him the third try to finally win it. He was in favor of giving up an advantage at a tournament where he has never posted the low 72-hole score and finished out of the top 10 in three of his five appearances. But Scheffler and others felt strongly that giving all 30 players the same chance is the way to identify the FedEx Cup champion. 'When you look at the FedEx Cup, I think it's a greater discussion,' he said. 'If you're going to have a true season-long race — truly the best player every year wins — odds are it's not going to come to an interesting of a conclusion in most years.' In other words, the race already would be over at this point. 'In order to win the FedEx Cup, you have to play good golf at the right time,' he said. 'In our sport, in order to accomplish what you want to accomplish, you have to play good golf at the right time. If you want to win major championships, you have to play great golf major championship weeks.' That's where the clarity comes in. The Tour Championship, which identifies the FedEx Cup champion, is no different from playing a major championship. That's when players want to be at their best. Scheffler was at Quail Hollow and Royal Portrush. He wasn't at Augusta National or Oakmont. 'Once you get to the Tour Championship, you've had a great season,' Scheffler said. 'And now you have an opportunity to go out and win the FedEx Cup. But you have to play good golf at the right time.' What hasn't changed since the FedEx Cup began in 2007 is rewarding consistently good golf with an emphasis at the end of the year. Play great all year and East Lake is a lock, which is why McIlroy was able to skip the first postseason event. Some played well enough that even a bad start in the postseason didn't keep them from advancing to the BMW Championship. Do just enough to be among the top 70 who get into the postseason and there is no margin for error. And then at East Lake, bring your best. 'I think a lot of times the media is always looking for something where we're looking for a perfect finish to the year,' Scheffler said. "Look at what LIV is doing with their final tournament. I tried to read about it the other day — I still can't figure out what they're trying to do with the final tournament. It's not easy to figure out a true season-long race. 'And I think when you're looking for an interesting finish to the year, I think we've got it down pretty good where you have 25, 30 weeks to prove yourself to get into the Tour Championship and then it's game on.' The season-long points race is not for the FedEx Cup. Scheffler won that, and he already has been rewarded with $15 million in bonus money. The race is for the opportunity. 'I don't care who you are, it's hard to get into this top 30,' Harris English said. 'You've had a hell of a year if you're made it this far. I like it that everyone starts at zero. This is a culmination of getting everyone to square one, the top 30 guys. Now go get it." ___ On The Fringe analyzes the biggest topics in golf during the season. AP golf:

Former Alabama star emerging in trade rumors ahead of 2025 NFL season
According to reports, a former Alabama Crimson Tide running back is emerging in trade rumors as we inch closer to the 2025 NFL season. Per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, Brian Robinson Jr. did not play in the Washington Commanders' 31-17 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday, a mutual decision between the former Alabama standout and the team. Garafolo also reported that a trade before the 53-man roster cut "remains a possibility." A former third round pick by Washington in the 2022 NFL draft, Robinson has started 37-of-41 games across each of the past three seasons with the Commanders, rushing for a combined 2,329 yards and 15 touchdowns on 570 attempts. Robinson also has a combined 65 receptions for 587 yards and five touchdowns during that span. Last season, Robinson had likely his best season in the NFL yet, rushing for 799 yards and eight touchdowns on 187 attempts. Starting 13-of-14 games, Robinson also had 20 receptions for 159 yards.
