World record holder marathon runner suspended for doping

Monaco, July 18(UNI) Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has provisionally suspended Kenyan marathon runner Ruth Chepngetich for doping.
Chepngetich, the women's marathon world record holder, was suspended yesterday after testing positive for a banned substance.
In a statement, the AIU said that the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) was detected in a sample collected from her on March 14, 2025.
Chepngetich clocked a time of two hours, nine minutes, and 56 seconds, breaking the world record to win the Chicago Marathon in October 2024.
The previous record was set by Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa at the 2023 Berlin Marathon, where she completed the race in two hours and eleven minutes.
Use of HCTZ is prohibited under the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) code. It is commonly used to treat hypertension and fluid retention.

Sports Ministry Hints At Creation Of New Federation After AIU Mismanagement

Last Updated: The sports ministry may act against the Association of Indian Universities after mismanagement at the World University Games. Angered by the 'mismanagement" that led to India's embarrassment at the World University Games, the sports ministry is contemplating action against the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) by establishing a separate federation to manage university-level sports. The Indian badminton squad, which won bronze at the ongoing Games in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany, faced controversy when it was revealed that six of the 12 selected players were barred from participating due to Indian officials' failure to correctly submit all names during the managers' meeting on July 16. Additionally, female quarter-miler Devyani Bazala alleged she could not compete as her name went 'missing because of late alteration by officials in submitting the confirmation list". The ministry has noted these developments, as per reliable sources. 'Clearly, they are unable to manage the affairs properly. Probably, the solution is a separate federation to handle administration. A revamp is needed because university sport is our best bet to find high-potential athletes," a ministry source said. 'It is obviously sad that something like this happened and the country was embarrassed. This will be thoroughly looked into," he added. The athletes, meanwhile, expressed their frustration over the lapses. 'The frustrating thing is the officials don't even admit their mistakes or show any remorse," an athlete competing at the Games had said after the fiasco. '…the team travelled all the way, and yet in the manager's meeting they missed out names. I don't know how it is possible to overlook such a basic responsibility." Cetre leads Estudiantes to comeback win in Argentina's Primera Division

Buenos Aires, July 22 (UNI) Edwuin Cetre and Alexis Castro scored second-half goals as Estudiantes recovered from a goal down to beat Huracan 2-1 in Argentina's Primera Division Clausura tournament. Fabio Pereyra gave his side the lead by heading in from Matko Miljevic's corner but Cetre equalized with a spectacular overhead volley after Guido Carrillo's headed pass. Cetre then turned provider with a driving run and cross for Castro, who sent a bullet header into the top-right corner on Monday. The result leaves Estudiantes eighth in the 15-team Group A standings with three points from two games while Huracan is last, having failed to pick up a point from its first two matches. "Edwuin Cetre continues to be influential in attack and we're fortunate to have top-level players like him to unlock matches," Estudiantes manager Eduardo Dominguez said. "The fans had a right to be angry in the first half. They got behind us in the second and you could see the way their support had a positive impact on the team. I made it clear to the players in the locker room after the match that we need to be more consistent so that the fans are always behind us." In other fixtures on Monday, San Martin won 3-2 at home to Deportivo Riestra, and Defensa y Justicia eased to a 2-0 home win over Aldosivi. UNI/XINHUA BM
