Hearts boss Derek McInnes heaps praise on star man Stuart Findlay after headed double earns win at Tannadice

Daily Mail3 days ago
Derek McInnes hailed the impact of new Hearts hero Stuart Findlay after the defender's third goal in two games sealed a dramatic late victory for the Tynecastle side and sent them top of the Premiership.
With ambitious investor Tony Bloom's words about potentially splitting the Old Firm this season still ringing in their ears, the Gorgie men were trailing 2-1 to Dundee United at Tannadice before Findlay equalised in the 58th minute and then headed the winner in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
The 29-year-old's double, following his crucial goal in a 2-0 win over Aberdeen last Monday, maintained McInnes' perfect start to life as Hearts manager with six straight victories so far in the Premier Sports Cup and league.
Having spent the previous two seasons at Kilmarnock under McInnes in a loan deal from Oxford United, Findlay is already thriving in a similar arrangement at Hearts.
'I couldn't get Stuart to score when I had him at Kilmarnock but he can't stop now,' said McInnes. 'He's a brilliant boy. First and foremost, I know he will do his job defensively week in, week out. But it's great to see him getting a chance to shine and take plaudits from that side of it.
'You can see the Hearts supporters are choking for heroes, they are desperate for the players to make them chant their name and earn that adulation.
'Stu's job is to stop the opposition's best players from scoring and he does that time and time again, but he can score goals from set plays and I'm glad we're getting a bit of a reputation for those.'
McInnes wasn't wholly satisfied with his team's display — after Lawrence Shankland's penalty opener, they surrendered their lead to a double by United's Ivan Dolcek — but was gratified by the manner of victory.
'It wasn't perfect but it was dramatic,' he said. 'There was some good and bad in the game. Ultimately, winning with a last-minute goal is always welcome.
'The players had a responsibility and belief that something else would happen for them and would get that opportunity.
'The game was just a bit too scrappy for me. We didn't get any real rhythm. But we kept going and late winners are magic.
'It illustrates a lot — the quality of our bench, the personality of the players and that real belief within the squad.'
United manager Jim Goodwin admitted his players ultimately felt the effects of their incredible 2-2 draw against Rapid Vienna in Austria last Thursday night.
'We played really well in the first half but started to fatigue in the second half and drop that bit deeper,' said Goodwin. 'But we need to do better defensively as all of Hearts' goals came from set pieces.'

Jack Wilshere, 33, REJECTS Arsenal's offer of Under-21s manager as he holds out for first permanent senior role

JACK WILSHERE has opted against returning to Arsenal as an academy coach as he looks to pursue a senior manager role. The 33-year-old was previously the Gunners' U18s boss – guiding them to the FA Youth Cup final back in April 2023 before joining Norwich as an assistant coach in October 2024. 2 2 After leaving the Canaries by mutual consent back in April – having briefly been interim boss – Wilshere has been on the hunt for his next job, eyeing another EFL club to get his management career up and running. Arsenal are currently looking for a new U21s coach after losing Mehmet Ali to Brentford's backroom team, and Wilshere was approached for a Hale End return. Wilshere's role would have involved the U21s as well as a wider remit in player development. But now, Arsenal are believed to be close to permanently appointing Max Porter – the 39-year-old has been at the academy since 2017 and has been in interim charge of the U21s. Wilshere remains highly regarded by the Arsenal academy, especially in his role developing Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly before becoming first-team stars, as well as 15-year-old Max Dowman. Mikel Arteta enjoyed having Wilshere at the club to bridge the gap between Hale End and the seniors, with the latter spending time training with the first team. Wilshere made 197 appearances for Arsenal as a player between 2008 and 2018 before spells at Bournemouth, West Ham and Danish side Aarhus. He is no stranger to the youth setup at Arsenal, having come through the academy at the club after joining at the age of nine. But injury issues hampered his career development and, despite significant showings in the Champions League for Arsenal and his inclusion in England 's 2014 World Cup squad, he became one of the game's biggest 'what-ifs'.

Promising Barnet academy star dies at 18 in serious crash as League Two club release heartbreaking statement

BARNET have revealed that youngster Arash Javanmardi has been tragically killed in a "serious" car crash. The club confirmed the heartbreaking news on Wednesday night as they paid tribute to the 18-year-old. 1 Javanmardi had been at Barnet for the past two years and was a top player in their academy. But he sadly died after failing to recover from injuries sustained in a car crash. A minute of applause will be held for Javanmardi on Saturday ahead of Barnet's League Two clash against Walsall. Vikings WR Justin Jefferson (hamstring) to be re-evaluated next week

August 13 - By Field Level Media Minnesota Vikings star wide receiver Justin Jefferson will sit out this weekend's preseason game against the New England Patriots and be re-evaluated next week, head coach Kevin O'Connell said Wednesday. The four-time All-Pro has been sidelined since taking himself out of practice on July 24 with a strained left hamstring. "Just an update on Justin, you've seen him starting to take part in walk-throughs. He's definitely progressing and doing a great job there," O'Connell told the media on Wednesday ahead of the team's joint practice with the Patriots. "We hope to reassess early next week and see if we can start building on that workload." Jefferson, 26, missed seven games in 2023 with a torn right hamstring. The 2022 Offensive Player of the Year, Jefferson has recorded more receiving yards (7,432) than any other player through five NFL seasons. He already ranks fourth in franchise history in receiving yards and first in receiving yards per game (96.5), which also ranks first in NFL history.
