Smart meters live but consumers unable to access data in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Public resistance to Time of Day (ToD) or smart meters is mounting with many complaining of technical glitches. On Thursday, several consumers raised grievances after they were unable to access real-time consumption data despite MSEDCL's claim that smart meters installed in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar have gone live. These new meters were installed as part of central govt's Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).

These were expected to update consumers on their real-time energy consumption and analyse power consumption data. A consumer from the N-11 sector said he received a message that read 'no data found' when he tried to access his power consumption trends using the official mobile app of MSEDCL. "The MSEDCL replaced my old meter with a smart meter a few weeks ago. While the new devices are projected as modern ones, these so-called smart meters fail to share hourly, daily and monthly power consumption analysis," he said, preferring anonymity.According to official data, over 56,000 ToD meters have been installed by MSEDCL in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar zone so far. Leftist leader Abhay Taksal, who has launched a public campaign against the new meter installations, said the unavailability of desired data exposes MSEDCL's tall claims. "The installation of smart meters is a strategy to offer benefits to corporate players at the cost of the interest of consumers. Govt must roll back its plan of replacing existing meters," he said. When contacted, Pawankumar Kachhot, MSEDCL chief engineer of the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar zone, said the private agency concerned was developing a mobile application to access the data concerned. "The mobile application is under development. Once developed and made available to public, consumers will be able to access consumption trends," he told TOI. The MSEDCL top brass said they had no idea why the official mobile app of the state power utility has provided the option of accessing the desired data separately.

Andhra CM N Chandrababu Naidu pitches financial incentives to have more kids
VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh, which once amended its laws to bar people with more than two kids from contesting panchayat and municipal elections, now plans to incentivise having larger families as part of a strategy to combat dropping fertility rates and shift focus to what chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu terms 'investment in human capital'. 'I am looking at giving financial incentives by taking a family as a unit. The bigger families may get higher incentives,' Naidu told TOI ahead of completing a year in office on June 12. 'As part of the 'Zero Poverty ' initiative, I have already rolled out an interesting model in which wealthier people will adopt poor families. This will not only bridge income disparities, but also ensure welfare of the entire family,' he said. The four-time CM, who has been an advocate of population management, said the current demographics in the southern states require govts to revisit their strategies. With current fertility rate, Andhra will face serious problems: CM Fertility rates in Andhra Pradesh need to increase. At the present rate, AP will face serious problems… That is why I am thinking of bigger families,' CM N Chandrababu Naidu said. He announced recently that female employees could avail of maternity leave any number of times. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 임플란트 최대 할인 지원해드려요 임플란터 더 알아보기 Undo 'It was limited to two times only. We have removed the restrictions,' he said. The state govt also made it mandatory for every organisation to provide childcare centres at workplaces. Naidu announced financial assistance of Rs 15,000 for every schoolchild. 'We give this money directly to the mothers of students. Apart from this, the NDA govt in AP is planning to announce financial assistance to couples for having more kids.' The two-child policy previously applicable to prospective candidates for panchayat and municipal polls has been reversed. In 2023, Sikkim announced incentives for indigenous people to have more children. Mizoram, too, has been encouraging tribal couples to have more than two kids. Tamil Nadu CM M K Stalin said recently that with the Centre pushing for population-based delimitation of constituencies, there was a need for people in the state to have more children.

Footpath, trees near Dalit Prerna Sthal won't be harmed for e-way widening: Noida
Noida: Noida Authority clarified on Sunday that the footpath and trees along a 600-metre long and 5.5-metre wide stretch near Dalit Prerna Sthal will not be damaged during an upcoming project. This comes a day after TOI reported that Authority plans to widen Noida Expressway from Sector 95 to DND Flyway loop by adding the 600-metre long and 5.5m wide stretch. Noida Authority is yet to issue a tender to hire a contractor for this project. In a press note issued on Saturday, the Authority initially said that a consultant hired to explore options for widening the expressway recommended removing a one-metre-wide roadside track, a 1.4-metre-wide footpath and a 3.1-metre-wide paved tiled surface to expand the carriageway by 5.5 metres. Noida's clarification came after concerns were raised on social media platform X, with users questioning the widening of the road and expressing fears about possible damage to greenery and pedestrian pathways. Noida Authority deputy general manager (Civil) Vijay Rawal said that while some trees stand on the left side of the expressway and a footpath runs between the expressway and the Sthal, both will remain intact. "The trees and footpath will not be harmed. On the left side of the footpath, there are tiles which will be removed to make way for the project," Rawal explained. There are nearly 40-50 fully grown trees along the way. The footpath is also used by a number of visitors to Dalit Prerna Sthal who come to see the memorial and also to observe the birthday celebrations of Dr BR Ambedkar, Kanshi Ram, Mayawati and other Dalit stalwarts. Nearly 1,000 people visit Dalit Prerna Sthal on a normal day, while the numbers increase to 10,000 on the birthday celebrations of stalwarts. "What is the need for this widening and how many trees will be cut? If the pavement is damaged, how will commuters and visitors to the Sthal navigate?" asked Brajesh Sharma, a resident of Sector 78, in an X post. Another commuter said that the traffic pressure has immensely increased, leading to a choke point near the DND Flyway loop during peak hours. "The road widening is important, but that should not be conducted by harming the trees," he said. Nearly five lakh vehicles use the Noida Expressway daily, with around two lakh entering the city via the DND Flyway and another one lakh each from Kalindi Kunj, Chilla Border and Noida's internal sectors.

In 2 years, NHAI barred 29 firms from bidding after poor quality work
NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi has asked road transport ministry to formulate "clear norms and standards" for subcontractors engaged by main highway builders to ensure high quality of work during project execution. The ministry has also been instructed to rework the criteria of eligibility and selection of supervision engineers, who are responsible for quality compliance during construction. These instructions, among several others, came amid instances of newly-built highways getting damaged due to poor quality work - primarily because of abnormally low prices quoted by bidders to bag projects and laxity in supervision by consultancy firms engaged by the govt. Last Dec, the PM had reviewed the ministry's performance and minutes of the meeting issued last month mentions these directions, TOI has learnt. While the ministry has amended the contract conditions to discourage abnormally low bids, it is finalising stringent norms for rating of supervision engineers. These will be rolled out in a couple of weeks. The rating will make it impossible for those scoring poorly to get work. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Meanwhile, cracking down on poor performers, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has barred over a dozen construction companies and 17 consultancy firms from bidding for projects and has also imposed an around Rs 24 crore penalty on them in past two years. In a series of disciplinary action, 26 NHAI officers, including several general managers and deputy general managers, were suspended for negligence and dereliction of duty. Another 57 officers, who were on deputation, were repatriated prematurely to their parent cadre as part of the clean-up drive. In a strong message to highway builders, NHAI has also warned contractors that they will not just face penalty but will also have to bear the cost of new construction for failures.
