'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' holds its lead atop the box office
'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' earned $40 million from 4,125 North American theaters, a 66% drop from a healthy $117.6 million debut. The film was accompanied by comedies 'The Bad Guys 2' and 'The Naked Gun' in the top three box office rankings.
The superhero movie dipped significantly more than Marvel's previous film, 'Thunderbolts,' which took a 55% dive in its second weekend.
'First Steps' is the last major blockbuster of the summer. It added nearly $40 million internationally in its second weekend, bringing thefilm's global total to $369 million. The movie's box office drop off was surprising given its strong reviews, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for the data firm Comscore.
Though the movie's debut weekend may have given box office results a strong push toward the $4 billion summer benchmark, August is off to a slow start, he said.
'It's a tough lift, but we might be able to get there. It really means that all the films are gonna have to stand on their own,' Dergarabedian said. 'It's gonna be about getting great reviews, having that staying power, that longevity in the marketplace.'
Newcomer comedy 'The Bad Guys 2' earned second place at the box office this weekend, with $22 million from 3,852 North American theaters. That was on par with projections and also in line with the first movie in the series, which brought in $23 million in 2022. Paramount's slapstick comedy, 'The Naked Gun,' also in its debut weekend, snagged the third box office spot, earning $17 million from 3,344 locations.
Jim Orr, president of domestic distribution for Universal Pictures, said the solid debut for 'The Bad Guys 2,' coupled with strong audience reaction scores, 'should point to a very long, very successful run through not only the rest of the summer, but really, I think into the fall.'
James Gunn's 'Superman,' which opened four weekends ago and already crossed $550 million globally, earned $13.8 million domestically this weekend, taking the fourth spot. 'Jurassic World Rebirth' followed with $8.7 million.
The horror movie 'Together' had a strong debut weekend, coming in at sixth place and earning $6.8 million domestically, proof that August is a month for edgier and off-beat films, Dergarabedian said.
'That's what this month is about. It's not just about box office,' Dergarabedian said. 'It's also about providing really interesting, rewarding movie-going experiences for audiences.'
Dergarabedian said he expects highly-anticipated movies hitting theaters in the next few weeks — including 'Freakier Friday,' and Zach Cregger's horror movie 'Weapons' — to give August a needed boost.
The box office is currently up 9.5% from last year.
With final domestic figures being released Monday, this list factors in the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore:

Inside ‘The Naked Gun' Scene Director Akiva Schaffer Had to Fight to Keep
[Editor's note: The following interviews contain spoilers for 'The Naked Gun.'] It's a scene that comes out of nowhere, and the one people want to talk about after seeing the new 'Naked Gun' movie. At the mid-way point in the film, Frank Drebin Jr. (Liam Neeson) and Beth (Pamela Anderson) have fallen in love, setting into motion an '80s-style montage following the new couple on a lover's getaway to a winter cabin. At first, the snowman is part of the couple's silly, intimate games, but eventually becomes a third wheel, resulting in homicidal rage and the love montage descending into something more akin to a horror movie. The snowman is so off-the-wall, brazen, and hysterical — the perfect mix of 'The Naked Gun' and the Lonely Island style of humor — and it is also the best example of how co-writer/director Akiva Schaffer put his own distinct stamp on the franchise. When Schaffer was on the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, he discussed the snowman scene and how wary he was of doing 'fan fiction' of the original. 'No offense to other reboots and redos and legacy sequels out there, but a lot of them are so stuck on re-doing the stuff that the original did,'' said Schaffer. 'You watch them and are delighted, but it's like empty calories, and when it's done, you barely remember that you saw it because, my theory at least, is they're not really a new movie. They're fan fiction of the old movie.' That fear of doing a 'paint by numbers Mad Libs' of the original was very much on Schaffer's mind when he and co-writers Dan Gregor and Doug Mand reached the mid-point of their story. 'We got to the point in our script, we were like, 'Wow, this love story deserves a montage,'' said Schaffer. 'The original 'Naked Gun' has a very famous, very good montage set to 'I'm Into Something Good.'' The 1988 original love montage is truly a classic — the cheery Herman's Hermit 1964 hit is a smart fit, watching Leslie Nielsen and Priscilla Presley laugh their way through a first date to see 'Platoon' is still funny, and who can forget that body condom? The original had done all of that so well, but so had others. 'We knew it had to be different than that,' said Schaffer. 'And then also there's been 30 years of making fun of montages, whether it's 'Team America' doing a montage, or whatever, there's not a lot of room left in the montage. We were debating not doing a montage and had a few other ideas.' Schaffer said he was aware of 'Jack Frost,' but had only seen the trailer of the 1998 killer snowman movie. It wasn't a sub-genre (if you can even call it that) he'd been consciously considering spoofing, but one night when he got up at four in the morning to use the bathroom, the snowman scene started to play out in his head. 'When I got back in bed, it had been percolating that day in the writers' room, and I just saw the entire thing and wrote it into bullet point notes, and then texted it to Dan and Doug,' said Schaeffer. 'The next morning, I came into the writers' room and they were like, 'Yeah. Done.' It honestly only changed teeny bits for production reasons, a cabin instead of a house, but it never really changed.' That's not to say everyone involved with 'The Naked Gun' reboot initially understood the brilliance of the scene. 'It was polarizing in script-reads. People I really respect, like Andy Sandberg, when he read it for me, he was like, 'Snowman's the best. Do not let them cut it,' knowing it would be cuttable,'' said Schaeffer. 'It makes sense once you see the movie, but at one point I did have to threaten to quit.' Schaffer is clear that he felt supported in making the film he wanted to make, but due to the opposition, he pared down the snowman so that if it didn't play, it could be removed from the film without leaving a hole. For example, there were drafts of the script in which the snowman reappears at the end of the film — able to reconstitute itself from the fountain after the climactic action scene — that never got shot. 'After the first test screen, it was the number one scene in the movie,' said Schaffer. 'The people that really fought me on it after ate a lot of crow without me asking. I tried to let them off the hook easy, and go, 'That's fine,' but they were like, 'No, dude, we were wrong.'' A Paramount Pictures release, 'The Naked Gun' is now in theaters. Never say never! After swearing off dating, Liam Neeson, 73, has been in the news with talk of some off-screen love with 'Baywatch' alum, Pamela Anderson. Now Neeson's Lincoln Square family home — where he raised his two sons with the late actress Natasha Richardson — has sold for $10.3 million, according to city property records filed on Monday. They're also clearly having a blast promoting the film, and their on- and off-screen chemistry — while coyly declining to confirm or deny the existence of a romance. One of Neeson's sons, Daniel, just gave the couple his stamp of approval from the audience of Andy Cohen's 'WWHL,' as did Neeson's former sister-in-law, actor Joely Richardson, of films like 'The Patriot' and TV series like 'Nip/Tuck.' Joely's sister, Natasha — who was Neeson's wife — died in 2009 following a ski accident in Quebec. She starred in 'The Parent Trap.' Both are the daughters of Vanessa Redgrave and Tony Richardson. Neeson has appeared in more than 100 films, including the Oscar-winning 'Schindler's List,' and 'Love Actually.' Oasis says they're ‘shocked and saddened' after fan falls to his death at Wembley show
A man fell to his death at the Oasis concert on Saturday at Wembley Stadium, British Metropolitan Police have confirmed. In a statement given to the BBC, officials said they responded to a report that a man in his 40s had been injured at the show around 10:19 p.m. BST. After discovering 'injuries consistent with a fall,' the man was pronounced dead at the scene. 'The stadium was busy, and we believe it is likely a number of people witnessed the incident, or may knowingly or unknowingly have caught it on mobile phone video footage,' officials said. They then called for any information regarding the incident to be reported. It is believed the man fell from the stadium's upper tier. No additional details were added concerning the cause of the fall, though some attendees who witnessed the incident suggested that the man may have slipped. 'So much beer was being thrown throughout the whole concert,' one woman told the Guardian. 'I was surprised they allowed people to bring drinks into the stands. It made the floor really slippy.' Another fan, John, says he saw many fans leaning against the balcony from block 511, where witnesses claim the fall took place. 'There were loads of people who just kept going down to the front and leaning right over. One guy was stopped, but after that, no security came down,' he said. 'There's a rail and a small guard, but it did make me think someone could quite easily get knocked off there.' He was also critical of alcohol consumption at the show, adding that he 'constantly saw people with cardboard cup holders full of pints.' The Times reported on Friday that Oasis fans had drank 250,000 pints of beer during one show at Wembley, breaking a stadium record. Last year's Coldplay gigs saw 120,000 pints sold, and 40,000 for Taylor Swift. Representatives of Wembley Stadium told the BBC that paramedics attempted to revive the man on the scene, but to no avail. 'Despite their efforts, the fan very sadly died.' they said. Oasis addressed the tragedy, telling NME they were 'shocked and saddened' to hear the news. 'Oasis would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the person involved,' they added. The concert was the fourth show in Oasis' quartet of sold-out appearances at Wembley; they'll close out the historical run on Monday. The North American leg of their tour will kick off on Aug. 24 in Toronto and make its way to Los Angeles for two nights at the Rose Bowl on Sept. 6 and 7. The Gallagher brothers shocked the world when they reunited after 15 years, following a widely publicized and bitter fallout in 2009. The reunion rollout began with a teaser video posted on Aug. 25, 2024, on the band's Instagram account. It contained a date and time: '08.27.24, 8 a.m.' It would end up being the official announcement of their 2025 tour. 'This is it,' the band wrote. 'This is happening.'
