Oasis says they're ‘shocked and saddened' after fan falls to his death at Wembley show

Los Angeles Times16 hours ago
A man fell to his death at the Oasis concert on Saturday at Wembley Stadium, British Metropolitan Police have confirmed.
In a statement given to the BBC, officials said they responded to a report that a man in his 40s had been injured at the show around 10:19 p.m. BST. After discovering 'injuries consistent with a fall,' the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
'The stadium was busy, and we believe it is likely a number of people witnessed the incident, or may knowingly or unknowingly have caught it on mobile phone video footage,' officials said.
They then called for any information regarding the incident to be reported. It is believed the man fell from the stadium's upper tier.
No additional details were added concerning the cause of the fall, though some attendees who witnessed the incident suggested that the man may have slipped.
'So much beer was being thrown throughout the whole concert,' one woman told the Guardian. 'I was surprised they allowed people to bring drinks into the stands. It made the floor really slippy.'
Another fan, John, says he saw many fans leaning against the balcony from block 511, where witnesses claim the fall took place.
'There were loads of people who just kept going down to the front and leaning right over. One guy was stopped, but after that, no security came down,' he said. 'There's a rail and a small guard, but it did make me think someone could quite easily get knocked off there.'
He was also critical of alcohol consumption at the show, adding that he 'constantly saw people with cardboard cup holders full of pints.'
The Times reported on Friday that Oasis fans had drank 250,000 pints of beer during one show at Wembley, breaking a stadium record. Last year's Coldplay gigs saw 120,000 pints sold, and 40,000 for Taylor Swift.
Representatives of Wembley Stadium told the BBC that paramedics attempted to revive the man on the scene, but to no avail.
'Despite their efforts, the fan very sadly died.' they said.
Oasis addressed the tragedy, telling NME they were 'shocked and saddened' to hear the news.
'Oasis would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the person involved,' they added.
The concert was the fourth show in Oasis' quartet of sold-out appearances at Wembley; they'll close out the historical run on Monday. The North American leg of their tour will kick off on Aug. 24 in Toronto and make its way to Los Angeles for two nights at the Rose Bowl on Sept. 6 and 7.
The Gallagher brothers shocked the world when they reunited after 15 years, following a widely publicized and bitter fallout in 2009.
The reunion rollout began with a teaser video posted on Aug. 25, 2024, on the band's Instagram account. It contained a date and time: '08.27.24, 8 a.m.' It would end up being the official announcement of their 2025 tour.
'This is it,' the band wrote. 'This is happening.'

More "hostile architecture" pops up in metro New Orleans

Some southeast Louisiana intersections are changing in an attempt by officials to discourage panhandling. But critics worry about the broader message being sent. Why it matters: So-called hostile architecture is a tactic to deter homeless encampments and reshape public places. The big picture: Hostile architecture, also called defensive architecture, uses elements to intentionally guide or restrict behavior that leaders deem undesirable, the National Coalition for the Homeless says in a report. The group says it is often used to "encourage people experiencing homelessness to move on to another community." Case in point: Before New Orleans hosted Super Bowl LIX, state officials cleared out homeless encampments under the Pontchartrain Expressway near Tchoupitoulas Street. The grassy areas were soon fenced off and the parts of the neutral ground were spread with rocks to deter walking or sitting. Jefferson Parish also has replaced the grass around at least one West Bank intersection with gravel meant to deter panhandlers. Flashback: New Orleans installed permanent fences in 2020 at the corner of South Claiborne and Cleveland avenues, preventing people from accessing the space that had once been one of the largest homeless encampments in the city, according to The Lens. The benches in Jackson Square have long had bars in the middle too, which are meant to prevent people from sleeping on them. Zoom out: Major cities like Dublin, Paris and San Francisco have tried versions of hostile architecture, according to reports, with most geared at preventing people from sleeping on the streets. Supporters of the architecture say it's the only way to keep sidewalks open and clean, writes Axios' Shawna Chen, while opponents argue it disproportionately affects vulnerable populations. State of play: New Orleans has been working for years on the hard-to-solve homelessness crisis. The effort got a $15 million federal boost in 2023 to house people experiencing homelessness in the city. The plans were disrupted, leaders and advocates told Verite, when Louisiana State Police started clearing out encampments before Taylor Swift's concerts last fall. Then, Gov. Jeff Landry created a temporary shelter in a Gentilly warehouse before the Super Bowl and relocated homeless people there, according to The Lens. The shelter closed after Mardi Gras. Authorities lately have been cracking down on people sleeping on the sidewalks of the French Quarter and the Marigny, according to The Times-Picayune.

The 'Wednesday' Season Two Cast Won't Include Percy Hynes White's Xavier - Here's Why

As excitement builds for Wednesday season two, many will be visiting the trailer and images of the key cast on the red (actually purple) carpet at events to launch the series alongside titular star, Jenna Ortega. And they will find one of the key characters - Xavier, played by Percy Hynes White - missing. As the first season (way back in November 2022) closed, it seemed like Xavier would take on a big part in the show's second outing. Handing Wednesday her first mobile phone so they could keep in contact over the summer holidays - and as the surviving member of the former 'love triangle-ish' from the show - he seemed sure to return. But Xavier will not return to the show, after Hynes White was accused of assault by a young woman in January 2023. A user on X claimed he assaulted her at a party and that he had done the same to other women, as well as throwing parties with intent of giving underage women alcohol. The post was later deleted. Other women made more allegations and some social media users called for him to be removed from the show. In June that year, Hynes White branded the allegations a 'campaign of misinformation'. He said in a statement on Instagram: 'Earlier this year, somebody I've never met started a campaign of misinformation about me online. Because of this, my family has been doxxed, and my friends have received death threats. Underage photos of me were used, and examples of me acting in character were presented as hateful. My friend Jane was falsely portrayed as a victim, and her attempts to set the record straight have been ignored. She gave me permission to include her in this message. 'The rumors are false. I can't accept the portrayal of me as someone bigoted, or criminally negligent of people's safety. These are the kind of baseless, harmful claims that can create mistrust toward victims. It's very distressing to know that this misinformation has upset people. I'm really thankful for everyone who's stood by me and helped share the facts. Harassment of my family, friends and coworkers needs to stop please. Thank you for taking the time to read this.' In May 2024, Hynes White confirmed he wouldn't appear in season two of Wednesday saying: 'I had so much fun working on this show. I can't wait to watch season 2 :) Much love.' Ortega spoke about the departure of Xavier in an interview with Vanity Fair. Asked about the issue, she said it was 'a weird redirect, but we're introducing so many different characters that I think it kind of will get lost,' adding Wednesday's 'world does feel slightly askew anyway.' Kidnapped model Chloe Ayling says newly diagnosed health condition could explain why nobody believed her story

Chloe Ayling has divulged more information as to why her astonishing kidnapping story was not initially believed. The 28-year-old made headlines back in 2017 when she attended a staged photoshoot in Milan, only to be injected with ketamine, stuffed into a suitcase and have her kidnapper demand a substantial ransom. Ayling's manager received a series of photos of the model, then just 20, scantily clad and unconscious, with demands that €300,000 (the equivalent of around £260,000) was paid to ensure her safety. If demands were not met, Ayling was to be sold off into sex slavery. While Ayling was freed after six days, the model, who has now spoken out in a new BBC documentary, admits it has not been easy rebuilding her life following the ordeal. In Chloe Ayling: My Unbelievable Kidnapping, Ayling explains that she is still plagued by the fact people don't believe her story. However, she adds that a recent autism diagnosis may have helped explain why many – including law enforcers – initially approached Ayling's story with a dose of skepticism. Reflecting on her childhood, Ayling says in the documentary: 'I had a lot of difficulties with communicating 'I'd react in the wrong way. If I was being told off I would smile. I just had the wrong reactions to things. 'My mum would come with me on school trips because I wouldn't be able to say what I wanted or express how I was feeling. For ages I just said I'm not an emotional person, but now I realise that no matter now hard I try, I just can't [express emotions].' When Ayling initially returned home following the ordeal, she spoke out about the horror she experienced – but her flat, emotionless delivery saw people question the authenticity of events. Others pointed towards the fact Ayling went shopping with her kidnapper, and speculated whether the kidnapping was an elaborate publicity stunt, or even whether Ayling had been in on the abduction all along. However, these theories are entirely unfounded; Lukasz Herba, who claimed to be a trained assassin and part of the 'Black Death' gang was found guilty of kidnapping and initially sentenced to 16 years and nine months in prison – reduced to 11 years following an appeal. Ayling, who received a diagnosis confirming she was on the autism spectrum disorder during the three-part documentary, does not hold a grudge against those who did not believe her. 'I can't really be mad at people for not understanding, when I didn't really understand it myself,' she says. Since the ordeal, Ayling took part in 2018's Celebrity Big Brother, where she placed 11th. She now shares son Ashton, with her former partner Conor Keyes, and shares content on social media and on her OnlyFans page.
