Amanah Saham Sarawak declares final dividend of three sen per unit

The Star16-07-2025
KUCHING: State-owned unit trust fund Amanah Saham Sarawak (Assar) has declared a final dividend of three sen per unit for the financial year ending June 30, 2025 (FY2025).
Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg ( pic ) said the distribution involved a total payout of RM14.52mil to 57,870 investors based on their holdings as of June 30.
He said this brought the total dividend distribution for the year to six sen per unit, after an interim dividend of three sen per unit was distributed in January this year.
"This is good news for Assar investors and I hope it will encourage the bumiputra community in Sarawak to keep investing," he said when announcing the dividend here on Wednesday (July 16).
For FY2025, Assar recorded a gross income of RM38.39mil.
After deducting expenses of RM5.7mil, its net income stood at RM32.69mil, with RM26.52mil available for distribution.
"The remaining RM12mil in undistributed income will be retained as reserves for future distributions," Abang Johari said.
He also announced that Assar was launching a mobile office to enhance accessibility to investors outside Kuching, especially those in remote areas.
The mobile office will travel to smaller towns and rural communities, offering services such as opening accounts, processing investments, updating investors' information and handling enquiries.
"I hope this initiative will be maintained and expanded.
"We want to see innovative service delivery in Sarawak, especially in rural areas, to make it more inclusive, people-friendly and efficient," Abang Johari said.

New road linking Meluan to Layar approved by Sarawak govt

SARIKEI: The Sarawak government has approved a proposal to construct a new six-kilometre road connecting Ulu Entabai and Ulu Entaih in Meluan, Julau, to Ulu Penebak in Layar, Betong. Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced the decision during the opening ceremony of the Nanga Lasi Bridge in Julau. He stated that the road would reduce travel time from Meluan to Betong and Kuching to approximately two and a half hours. 'This road will transform Meluan from a remote interior area into an accessible part of Kuching,' he said. Residents will now be able to travel to Kuching within two and a half hours and return the following day. The project will also help farmers transport agricultural produce to markets in Kuching more efficiently. Abang Johari estimated the construction cost to reach tens of millions of ringgit. Meluan Assemblyman Rolland Duat Jubin proposed the road, highlighting benefits for 2,500 longhouse residents, three primary schools, and a clinic. The project will also expedite surveys for indigenous customary land rights in the area. Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas supported the proposal during the event. Additional approved projects include the RM92 million Nanga Lasi/Balut/Suchong road upgrade and the RM80 million Jalan Lijan project. The RM150 million Jalan Nanga Entaih/Rh Sang Lasa, Kemalih project includes 13 connecting roads. A RM5 million plantation road is also part of the RM327 million total allocation. The newly completed 96-metre Nanga Lasi steel bridge replaces an old suspension bridge, improving safety and connectivity. Since its completion on January 16, the bridge has served 2,250 residents, linking Nanga Lasi-Balut and easing travel to Sarikei and Sibu. - Bernama

Sarawak Premier: Poverty calculation must include assets, not just cash

JULAU: Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg said the state disagreed with former Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli on the methodology used to calculate poverty levels in Sarawak. Speaking at the opening of a RM4.7 million bridge here, he said poverty should not be calculated solely on a household's cash income. Instead, he said, the calculation should also be based on the assets each household possesses. The premier also disagreed with claims that Julau was among the poorest districts in the country. "His economic data is not correct. I have suggested to him to go to the ground, get more information because in the aspects of the rich and poor, according to basic economy, it is based on assets as well, not cash alone. "It should be assets plus cash," he said, adding that many people from Julau had purchased houses in Sibu Jaya with cash when he was housing minister. "Even a bank was shocked because normally, house buyers used loans to buy the houses," he said. Abang Johari said the house buyers bought the property from their agriculture income. "So, I said to the economy minister then that your calculation was wrong. No calculation is based on what you see, but also on your assets. This is a basic economy. That was why he was surprised why we (the state) have more income," he said. The premier said he did not want to comment on the income earned by rural farmers. He said it was "weird" that residents would request a multi-storey car park if they were poor, as it meant there were more vehicles on the road and more parking spaces were needed. Abang Johari approved the construction of a RM5 million multi-storey car park for Julau town.

New bridge ends 60-year wait for safer crossing in Nanga Lasi

Today, that chapter closed. Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg officially opened the RM4.7-million Nanga Lasi Bridge — a 96-metre steel link that promises safer, faster, and more reliable access to schools, clinics, towns, and markets for some 2,250 residents. 'With the completion of this bridge, residents will enjoy safer, faster and more reliable access to schools, clinics, towns and markets,' Abang Johari said, adding that the project is part of a broader effort to strengthen the road and bridge network across Sarawak. He also said that the state government has earmarked RM6 billion for 17 major bridges, including Batang Lupar 1 and 2, Paloh, Lassa, Kemena, and now Nanga Lasi – fully funded through state revenue. He added that Sarawak's income has nearly doubled from RM6.8 billion in 2017 to RM14 billion last year, driven by sectors such as hydrogen, biofuel, and renewable energy. Awarded to Sanyar Resources Sdn Bhd and completed in January this year, the bridge includes a single-lane steel crossing, a 230-metre approach road, drainage works, safety barriers, and solar-powered lighting to reduce operating costs. It links Nanga Lasi Balut to Rumah Asun, Rumah Langgi, Rumah Achun, Rumah Moris, Rumah Unding, and Rumah Muling, as well as SK Nanga Lasi and the local clinic. Abang Johari also announced new infrastructure for Julau and Meluan: RM92 million for Jalan Nanga Lasi, Balut–Suchong; RM80 million for Jalan Lijan; RM150 million for Jalan Nanga Entaih and nearby village roads; and a six-kilometre Meluan–Betong road expected to cut travel time to Kuching to about two-and-a-half hours. 'These projects will not only improve travel but also open new market opportunities for agricultural produce and rural industries, helping to boost incomes and living standards,' he said, urging landowners to make full use of idle land for agriculture or other ventures. Also present at the opening ceremony were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas; Meluan assemblyman Rolland Duat Jubin; State Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh; Meradong assemblyman Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing; Sarawak JKR director Ir Dr Cassidy Morris, community leaders and local residents.
