Asyraf Wajdi: 'Bullying is a crime' campaign must start now [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: A coordinated effort to combat bullying and roll out the 'Bullying is a Crime' campaign at all levels must be launched, said Majlis Amanah Rakyat chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
He said strict punishment must be enforced regardless of a person's background.
"If someone is involved, firm action must be taken. Bullying victims inevitably suffer severe trauma—whether physical, mental, verbal, or cyber in nature.

"This vicious cycle—this chain of violence and bullying—must be broken. You touch, you go," he said in a video posted on Facebook.
His statement came following the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir, who reportedly fell from the third floor of a school hostel in Sabah.
The case has been linked to allegations of bullying among students at the school.
Asyraf said the effort must begin immediately and involve all parties—from schools, teachers, administrators, and the school environment to parents and media influences, which have been identified as contributing factors.
He added that it is crucial to instil the values of love and compassion in every student.
"If these values are not instilled in students, how can we expect to nurture a caring generation?
"Even worse, we may end up producing future leaders who lack moral values—people willing to exploit and oppress others simply because they have grown accustomed to a culture of bullying.
"Remember, bullying is a crime."
Yesterday, the Education Ministry said it is working closely with the police to investigate the death of Zara Qairina.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the ministry would extend full cooperation to the authorities and that investigators must be allowed to carry out their work without interference.
"The incident is currently being investigated by the police. The ministry will extend its full cooperation to the authorities," she said.

[Watch] Thai Tourist Scammed By 'Photographer' At KLCC, Charged RM800 For 43 Photos

Subscribe to our FREE A Thai female tourist was allegedly scammed by a man posing as a photographer at the Petronas Twin Towers (KLCC), who initially quoted RM20 per person for photos but later demanded RM800 for 43 pictures. The tourist and her friend were taking selfies at KLCC when poor lighting made their photos turn out badly. A local man claiming to be a photographer approached them, offering to take professional photos for RM20 per person. He said it was RM20 per person. I asked him multiple times before we started – is it RM20 for both of us, or RM20 each? 'When we reached the photo spot, he assured me it was RM20 per person. But by then, the shoot had already begun,' the tourist said on social media. The Scam Unfolds After the photo session ended, the man began calculating charges per photo instead of per person. Using a calculator, he multiplied RM20 by 43 photos taken, demanding over 6,000 Thai baht (approximately RM787). We originally agreed on RM20 per person, but then he said it was RM20 per photo. The man insisted she buy all photos and refused to let her select only a few. When she refused to pay, he became abusive and accused her of wasting his time. Public Response and Ongoing Concerns The incident led to outrage on social media, with many Malaysians apologising for the scammer's behaviour. 'We Malaysians deeply regret what you experienced. Usually this kind of fraudulent behaviour is not done by locals, but mostly by some Indonesians working here,' one comment read. Others called for police action: 'Police should investigate this photographer scam targeting tourists at the Twin Towers area.' Some noted that authorities have repeatedly cracked down on such activities at the location, but the scammers keep returning. Photographers near KLCC have faced criticism on social media for alleged harassment, while they defend their services as helpful and respectful for capturing tourist memories. The original Instagram post detailing the incident has since been taken down, but some media outlets managed to repost the video before its removal. ‘That was her last roti telur': Mum clings to final moments with daughter before Sabah dorm tragedy

SIPITANG, July 22 — Noraidah Lamat recalled that her daughter, Zara Qairina Mahathir, had always asked for 'kek batik' in the weeks before her death. 'For about a month, she kept asking for 'kek batik'. I prepared it in two or three containers – one for her, one for her friends, and one for her roommates,' said Noraidah at their home in Kampung Kalamauh, about 7km from Sipitang town, on Monday. 'She always wanted to eat out, but at home, it was always kek batik. In fact, the Sunday before she returned to her hostel, she cooked 'roti telur'. That was the last meal she made at home,' added the 45-year teacher whose daughter passed away last Thursday after she fell from a third-floor dormitory in Papar a day earlier. 'I was surprised… she was about to leave for her hostel but still wanted to cook for us.' Although she was puzzled by Zara's unusual request to return late to the hostel that day, Noraidah who teaches at a primary school in Sipitang, still reminded her daughter to follow the hostel rules. 'Normally, I would take her back by 11am and arrive there around 1 or 2pm, but that day she said, 'Mama, Zara will go back late this Sunday, okay?' I told her, that's too late. The hostel's latest check-in time is 3.30pm.' Noraidah shared her heartbreaking memories when Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif visited her home on Monday and presented RM10,000 from the Sabah State Education Fund (TPNS) alongside other aid. Arifin was joined by Yayasan Sabah director Datuk Ghulam Haidar Khan Bahadar and Qhazanah Sabah chairman Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob. On her daughter's decision to enrol in boarding school, Noraidah said it had been Zara's own wish. 'She wanted it. Many of her friends were in boarding schools, and she idolised me – she always imagined the joy of living in a hostel,' she said. Noraidah reaffirmed her full cooperation with the police and called for a transparent, fair, and thorough investigation into her daughter's tragic death. The incident, which has since gone viral, sparked widespread outrage and speculation that Zara – a top-performing student – may have jumped from the third floor due to bullying. Arifin, who is the State Education Exco, on Sunday assured that full cooperation will be given to police investigating the tragic death. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek had earlier expressed condolences, visited the family at the hospital, and pledged the ministry's full cooperation with authorities. — The Borneo Post * If you are lonely, distressed, or having negative thoughts, Befrienders offers free and confidential support 24 hours a day. Brazilian judge warns Bolsonaro over viral speech on social media

BRASÍLIA: A Brazilian Supreme Court judge has warned former president Jair Bolsonaro of possible imprisonment after his speech was widely shared on social media, violating a court-imposed ban. The far-right leader, accused of plotting a coup against successor Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, delivered the address, which was later posted by his allies and family. Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes cited posts on X, Instagram, and Facebook containing Bolsonaro's remarks as evidence of a breach. 'Delivered a speech to be shown on digital platforms,' Moraes stated, demanding clarification from Bolsonaro's lawyers within 24 hours or face 'immediate imprisonment.' Bolsonaro, currently under electronic monitoring, denied wrongdoing, calling the judge's actions 'cowardice.' Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump criticized Brazil's authorities, labeling the case a 'witch hunt' and imposing visa sanctions on Moraes. - AFP
