Chelsea forward Mykhailo Mudryk has been charged with anti-doping rule violations after a sample taken last year produced an adverse finding for a prohibited substance, England's Football Association (FA) said on Wednesday.
Mudryk had confirmed in December that a urine sample had produced the adverse finding following a routine anti-doping test, which the Ukraine international said came as a 'complete shock' as he had never knowingly used a banned substance.
The 24-year-old, who joined Chelsea in January 2023 for an initial fee of 62 million pounds ($83.44 million), had been provisionally suspended and has not played since.

'We can confirm that Mykhailo Mudryk has been charged with Anti-Doping Rule Violations alleging the presence and/or use of a prohibited substance, in terms of Regulations 3 and 4 of The FA's Anti-Doping Regulations,' an FA spokesperson told Reuters.
More from Football
'As this is an ongoing case, we are not in a position to comment further at this time.'
The regulations deal with the presence of a prohibited substance or its metabolites or the use or attempted use by a player of a prohibited substance or a prohibited method.
Mudryk risks a four-year ban if he cannot establish that the anti-doping rule violation was not intentional.
Reuters has contacted Chelsea but the club has not commented on the charges.

6 Haryana irrigation dept officials to face action over project delays
Chandigarh: Two days after Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini expressed strong displeasure over project delays and questionable work order allotments, particularly for the diaphragm wall in the Yamuna, the irrigation department has identified six officials, including two chief engineers, for strict departmental action. The administrative secretary of the irrigation and water resources department has forwarded a proposal detailing the disciplinary measures to the chief minister's office (CMO) for approval. The department is also considering a probe by the Anti-Corruption Bureau. A decision is expected on Friday, when the irrigation department officials attend a follow-up meeting, expected to be chaired by CM Saini himself. Sources said the meeting will review the progress of five mega projects, including a new parallel lined channel from Dadupur to Hamida head, the remodelling of the Western Yamuna Canal (WJC), augmentation canal remodelling, and the construction of a diaphragm wall downstream of Hathnikund barrage. "Soon after the Monday review, the officials facing action were identified and the proposal was forwarded to the CM," an official confirmed. "Regarding the Yamuna barrage work, technical clarifications on raw material sources will also be sought," the official added. Last week, irrigation and water resources minister Shruti Choudhry announced departmental action against 80 officials for use of substandard material in civil works. While this issue was yet to settle down, the slow pace of development in mega projects for the augmentation of irrigation and inadequate progress of works at the Yamuna barrage led to more chief engineers and errant officials facing action. On Monday, during a review meeting of mega projects worth more than Rs 100 crore of the irrigation and water resources department, the CM was upset with the pace of work progress and certain anomalies in the bidding and awarding of tenders. He categorically asked the administrative secretary and director general of the irrigation department to put his "displeasure note" on the file, demanding identification of the officials responsible. Chelsea's Mykhailo Mudryk faces potential four-year ban after FA doping charge
Once hailed as one of Europe's brightest young wingers, Mykhailo Mudryk now finds himself at the centre of a doping scandal that could dramatically alter the trajectory of his career. The 24-year-old Chelsea forward has been officially charged by the FA after testing positive for meldonium, a banned performance-enhancing charge comes six months after Mudryk was provisionally suspended in December 2024. Despite the time gap, the Football Association's decision signals that the evidence against the Ukrainian is substantial. If found guilty, he could face a ban of up to four years—an outcome that would stall his career during its prime who joined Chelsea in 2023 for 89 million, has yet to live up to the lofty expectations that accompanied his move from Shakhtar Donetsk. His Chelsea stint has been marred by inconsistency, and the doping saga has only deepened concerns about his long-term prospects. In his absence, Chelsea have already moved forward—Cole Palmer has taken over the coveted No.10 shirt, and the club has reshaped its attacking plans without the Ukrainian in the picture. Still, Mudryk hasn't given up. He maintains he did not knowingly take any banned substances and has hired a high-profile legal team—one that previously helped Paul Pogba reduce a similar ban. That precedent may offer a path forward, but the legal battle will be things stand, Chelsea have opted for silence, declining to comment on the latest developments. But behind closed doors, there will be pressing questions about how to proceed with a player whose future now hangs in the Mudryk, the stakes are enormous—not just a spot in the Chelsea XI, but the very foundation of his professional football career.

Tennis-Third seed Pegula tumbles out of Berlin Open, Sabalenka's match suspended
BERLIN (Reuters) -Aryna Sabalenka was a set up against Switzerland's Rebeka Masarova at the Berlin Open on Wednesday when the match was suspended due to slippery conditions, as the world number one started her grasscourt season less than two weeks after her French Open final loss. The top seed, who had taken a short holiday to Greece after her bitter three-set loss to Coco Gauff in Paris, looked at ease on the surface, quickly taking a 3-0 lead. She was never really troubled by the big-serving Swiss and broke her again to seal the set 6-2 when Masarova sent a forehand wide. But the match was then stopped after brief discussions with the players, with organisers saying conditions were getting too slippery in some areas of the court as the sun went down and humidity increased. Sabalenka did not seem to agree, asking the tournament official at one point "so you are stopping the match?" The winner of the match that will resume tomorrow will face either Czech Katerina Siniakova or world number 11 Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan in the quarter-finals. For third seed and defending champion Jessica Pegula it was a day to forget after the American wasted two matchpoints before losing to 2021 champion Liudmila Samsonova 6-7(8) 7-5 7-6(5) in a marathon match that lasted three hours and 21 minutes. The Russian, who will face either Poland's Magdalena Frech or American Amanda Anisimova next, put her thunderous first serve to good use for much of the match, firing a total of 18 aces to Pegula's two. Samsonova had enough opportunities to seal the first set but she squandered a total of four set points at 5-4 and 6-5 up, with Pegula snatching it in a tiebreak. The pair held serve until Samsonova broke her opponent at 5-5 to level. Pegula trailed 4-2 in the third but dug deep to win the next three games and even carved out two match points at 5-4. Samsonova, however, held firm to force another tiebreak and earned her quarter-final spot on her own first match point. Tunisia's Ons Jabeur, who slipped into the main draw as a lucky loser, booked her spot in the quarter-finals with a 6-1 6-3 thumping of world number five Jasmine Paolini. The two-time Wimbledon finalist and a winner in Berlin in 2022, earned her first top five win in almost two years and looks right at home on grass with the year's third Grand Slam in London less than two weeks away. It was also the first time since February that the 61st-ranked Jabeur won consecutive matches in the main draw of a tournament. She will face either Marketa Vondrousova or Russian Diana Shnaider in the last eight. Eighth seed Paula Badosa of Spain also punched her quarter-final ticket with a 7-6(2) 6-3 win over American Emma Navarro. (Reporting by Karolos Grohmann, editing by Pritha Sarkar and Toby Davis)
