New Delhi, Jul 23 (PTI) The Opposition on Wednesday put forth their demand for holding a debate on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor in the Rajya Sabha from next week, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's presence be ensured.
This is the first time that the meeting of BAC is being held, after the same was rescheduled since Monday. On Monday evening, the first day of the Monsoon session, Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the post of vice president, leading to further postponement of the meeting.
'The Business Advisory Committee meeting of the Rajya Sabha was held today under the chairmanship of Deputy Chairman Harivansh. The entire opposition demanded that the discussion on the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor be taken up starting next week.
'The two-day discussion for 16 hours should be taken up a day after the same started in Lok Sabha,' Congress' deputy leader in Rajya Sabha Pramod Tiwari told reporters after the meeting.
He also said the opposition wanted no resolution should be brought up during the debate on Operation Sindoor/Pahalgam attack, and a normal discussion spanning two days should be held.
'We have demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should be present during the discussion, and we have been assured that by the government,' he also claimed.
'I am hopeful that the prime minister will be present during the debate on Operation Sindoor,' Tiwari said.

On July 27, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Gangaikonda Cholapuram in Tamil Nadu's Ariyalur district. This town, a few kilometres away from the Kollidam River, is steeped in history. A thousand years ago, it was the capital of a global empire— one that sent its navies across the Indian Ocean and built monuments to last the ages. Gangaikonda Cholapuram was established by King Rajendra Chola I (1012–1044 CE), the son of the legendary Rajaraja Chola, to mark a triumphant military expedition to the Gangetic plains. The campaign lasted less than two years. To mark this victory, Rajendra shifted the capital from Thanjavur to the newly established city: Gangaikonda Cholapuram, which means, 'the city of the Chola who conquered the Ganga.' The city boasted grand markets and a sprawling palace said to cover 60 acres. Today, other than the temple, little of that remains. Remnants of the palace were found at Maligaimedu (the mound of the palace), just two kilometres behind the famous Brihadeeswarar Temple. The temple is a replica of the Thanjavur Big Temple. The outer wall was demolished by the British to build the Lower Kollidam Anaicut. Much of the temple's granite sculptures were dismantled, and the wall was almost entirely destroyed to obtain construction materials. When locals resisted the demolition, a promise was made to replace it with a brick wall. Despite the destruction, the temple remains a masterclass in Chola architecture. Its sculptures are both intricate and unique. Around the temple are ruins of smaller shrines, broken down to build the dam. Now, it is dry, cracked, and a shadow of its past. The canals that fed it are long gone. It relies solely on rainwater and is dry for most of the year. India has secured the right to impose temporary trade safeguards under its newly signed free trade agreement (FTA) with the United Kingdom, the commerce ministry confirmed on Saturday. The India-UK trade deal was signed in London on Thursday in the presence of senior leaders from both nations, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his UK counterpart Keir Starmer. 'In this agreement, there are bilateral safeguard measures,' the ministry said in an official statement, as per news agency PTI. 'It allows India to temporarily increase tariffs or suspend tariff concessions on certain goods if there is a significant surge in imports from the UK that causes or threatens to cause serious injury to Indian domestic industries.' The safeguard provisions are initially valid for up to two years but may be extended for another two years if a formal investigation finds that continued protection is necessary for the affected domestic sector to recover and adjust. 'Thus, the total maximum duration of a bilateral safeguard measure is four years,' the ministry said. According to the agreement, if India applies these safeguards only for two years, the UK cannot take retaliatory measures. However, if extended to four years, Britain will have the right to respond. The pact also includes a provision for provisional safeguards in urgent or emergency situations. 'Provisional measures can be used in critical or emergency situations to prevent irreparable harm to domestic industry,' the ministry said, adding these can be enforced for up to 200 days based on preliminary findings, but must be followed by a comprehensive investigation.
