Malaysians flood social media with prayers, wishes for PM Anwar on 78th birthday
Heartfelt messages from Cabinet members, state leaders, senior government officials, netizens and citizens of all backgrounds showed public confidence in Anwar's leadership and his push to advance the Malaysia Madani vision for a prosperous and harmonious nation.
In a Facebook post, the Prime Minister's Office wished Anwar good health, longevity and strength to continue steering the country towards a just and prosperous Malaysia Madani.
'All staff at the Prime Minister's Office extend our warmest wishes to YAB Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on his 78th birthday,' the post read, accompanied by a 44-second video highlighting key moments in his leadership journey.
Religious Affairs Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar also prayed for the PM to be blessed with health, strength and wisdom in leading the nation and realising the Malaysia Madani vision.
Among the well-wishers was Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, who expressed her appreciation for his steadfastness and patience.
Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali offered a brief but heartfelt message, praying for him to be blessed with Allah's grace and longevity.
Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari described Anwar as a distinguished national leader who governs with wisdom.
Meanwhile, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar conveyed his gratitude for Anwar's wise leadership.
'Our prayer is that every step YAB takes will be guided by divine direction, showered with Allah's mercy and love. Thank you for your wise and dedicated leadership in building Malaysia Madani,' he said.
Elsewhere on social media, the Malaysia Madani Facebook page posted a 2-minute-41-second reel featuring birthday wishes for the PM from various segments of society.
Adding a special touch, Federal Territories Mufti Ahmad Fauwaz Fadzil, Penang Mufti Associate Prof Dr Mohd Sukki Othman, academic and preacher Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Farid Ravi Abdullah, and motivational speaker-preacher Zul Ramli M. Razali joined in offering prayers for him.
Malaysians of all ages, races and professions also sent their wishes, including a heartwarming gesture from pupils of Sekolah Kebangsaan Presint 14 Putrajaya, who formed the number 78 to mark the PM's age.

BEIJING, Aug 10 — Nvidia's H20 chips pose security concerns for China, a social media account affiliated with China's state media said on Sunday, after Beijing raised concerns over backdoor access in those chips. The H20 chips are also not technologically advanced or environmentally friendly, the account, Yuyuan Tantian, which is affiliated with state broadcaster CCTV, said in an article published on WeChat. 'When a type of chip is neither environmentally friendly, nor advanced, nor safe, as consumers, we certainly have the option not to buy it,' the article concluded. Nvidia did not immediately respond to a request for comment. H20 artificial intelligence chips were developed by Nvidia for the Chinese market after the US imposed export restrictions on advanced AI chips in late 2023. The administration of US President Donald Trump banned their sales in April amid escalating trade tensions with China, but reversed the ban in July. China's cyberspace watchdog said on July 31 that it had summoned Nvidia to a meeting, asking the US chipmaker to explain whether its H20 chips had any backdoor security risks – a hidden method of bypassing normal authentication or security controls. Nvidia later said its products had no 'backdoors' that would allow remote access or control. In its article, Yuyuan Tantian said Nvidia chips could achieve functions including 'remote shutdown' through a hardware 'backdoor'. Yuyuan Tantian's comment followed criticism against Nvidia by People's Daily, another Chinese state media outlet. In a commentary earlier this month, People's Daily said Nvidia must produce 'convincing security proofs' to eliminate Chinese users' worries over security risks in its chips and regain market trust. — Reuters

‘Don't be a bully': Loke urges calm over flag errors, says leave enforcement to police
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 10 — Transport Minister Anthony Loke has urged Malaysians not to resort to intimidation over mistakes in displaying the Jalur Gemilang. He said that recent controversies over incorrectly displayed flags have sparked heated debate and risk diverting attention from upcoming National Day celebrations. 'Therefore, there is no need for any party to 'fish in troubled waters', let alone threaten to protest in front of the business premises involved or to 'teach' people how to fly the flag,' he said in a Facebook post. 'Such actions are a form of bullying and will certainly be rejected by Malaysians,' he added. Loke said the Jalur Gemilang, as a symbol of national sovereignty, must be flown correctly and with full respect. 'That is why there are specific laws to regulate its display,' he said. He said that enforcement is the responsibility of the police, who should be given space to act fairly and in line with the principle of the Rule of Law. 'In conjunction with this upcoming National Day, let us strengthen our unity, respect our diversity, and work diligently to contribute towards the development and progress of the Malaysia we all love,' he added. Loke's remarks follow a recent incident in Penang where a hardware store owner was arrested for hoisting the Jalur Gemilang upside down, one of several flag-related cases reported this year. Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh has since announced plans to hold a protest at the store tomorrow, saying he and his supporters intend to 'teach' the owner how to properly display the national flag.

(EPA Images pic) BEIJING : A senior Chinese diplomat considered a contender for future foreign minister has been detained by authorities for questioning, the Wall Street Journal reported today. Liu Jianchao, head of a department under the ruling Communist Party that oversees relations with foreign political parties, was 'taken away' after returning to Beijing from a work trip abroad in late July, according to people familiar with the matter, the report said. The reason for his detention could not be determined, it added. China's foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request by AFP to confirm the report. Liu, 61, has previously served in key diplomatic roles including ambassadorships to the Philippines and Indonesia and foreign ministry spokesman. He has also led various national and regional bodies tasked with implementing president Xi Jinping's signature crackdown on corruption. His detention represents the highest-level inquiry into a Chinese diplomat since Qin Gang, who was removed as foreign minister in 2023 following reports of an extramarital affair. Liu has been widely viewed as a rising figure in the Chinese diplomatic world. In early July, he accused the US' defence chief of 'inciting confrontation and conflict' by urging American allies to bolster their militaries to counter China. His most recent public engagement was on July 29 in Algeria, following meetings in several African countries, Singapore and elsewhere late last month, according to the website of the International Department, which he currently heads.
