‘Weaklings': Trump turns on his own base as Epstein fallout continues

News.com.au16-07-2025
In a furious tirade, Donald Trump has called some of his own supporters 'weaklings' and accused them for falling for a 'bullshit … scam' as the fallout from the Epstein files continues.
The US president's blistering attack on what he calls his 'past supporters,' come as a Republican politician makes a push to release the remaining documents related to finances and child sex offender Jeffry Epstein.
Mr Trump is facing the most serious split of his political career from his famously loyal right-wing base over suspicions that his administration is covering up lurid details of Epstein's crimes to protect rich and powerful figures they say are implicated.
Last week, the US Department of Justice concluded Epstein's 2019 death in a New York prison was indeed a suicide, there was no so-called 'client list' and there would be no further documents releases.
Yet earlier this year, Attorney-General Pam Bondi said she had the Epstein client list on her desk. She has now back tracked and said it was simply related documents.
A number of senior Republicans, including Speaker Mike Johnson and Mr Trump's daughter-in-law Lara Trump have said more Epstein documents should be released, even if they contain no incriminating information.
'Weaklings'
But on Wednesday, US time, Mr Trump took to social media to suggest that Republicans focusing in Epstein were falling for a Democrat 'hoax'.
That's despite Mr Trump talking about the 'Epstein files' on the campaign trail and his own officials repeatedly mentioning them now they are in office.
'(The Democrats) new SCAM is what we will forever call the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax, and my PAST supporters have bought into this 'bullshit,' hook, line, and sinker,' he write on his social media platform Truth Social.
'They haven't learned their lesson, and probably never will, even after being conned by the Lunatic Left for 8 long years.
'I have had more success in 6 months than perhaps any President in our Country's history, and all these people want to talk about, with strong prodding by the Fake News and the success starved Dems, is the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax.
'Let these weaklings continue forward and do the Democrats work, don't even think about talking of our incredible and unprecedented success, because I don't want their support anymore!,' he raged.
MAGA fury
The comments under his Truth Social posts are often full of praise for Mr Trump. But under Wednesday's Epstein post criticism was rife.
One poster said the Epstein case was 'why Trump won' and a third of his support could now vanish.
'Promises broken,' said another echoing Mr Trump's frequent refrain of 'Promises kept'.
'Trump is a globalist elite himself' was a further comment.
Republican Congressman Thomas Massie, a frequent Trump critic, announced on Wednesday he will push for a vote in Congress to release the documents.
The Justice Department would not be compelled to do so but it would increase the pressure on the administration which is already feeling the heat from some of the MAGA base that are convinced that the Epstein files will reveal a cabal of secrets and could sink people they deem as opponents.
Bondi 'needs to explain that'
House Speaker Mike Johnson, usually close to Mr Trump's views, has not contradicted the president but has urged the White House to release any documents.
'It's a very delicate subject, but we should put everything out there and let the people decide it,' Mr Johnson told a podcaster on Tuesday.
He also referenced Ms Bondi and her comment that she had Epstein's 'client list'.
'She needs to come forward and explain that to everybody.'
Mr Trump has defended Ms Bondi but has said that it is her decision now on whether further files are made public.

Lunch Wrap: ASX jumps higher, but Boss Energy smoked and coal gets legal smack

Trump eases off trade war with EU WA flexes as national economic top dog again Coal cops a legal blow as ASX edges higher At Monday lunchtime in the east, the ASX was edging higher by 0.25%. And fair enough, because the spat that nearly boiled over between the US and Europe has been defused, at least for now. Donald Trump and EU boss Ursula von der Leyen have announced a fresh trade pact, but still slaps 15% tariffs on most European exports. But hey, at least it's not 50%, which is where Trump was originally pointing the bazooka. Markets loved the clarity, with Wall Street futures rising and the S&P 500 chalking up yet another record last Friday. Back to the ASX, and it was the steady-Eddie sectors doing the heavy lifting – telcos, healthcare, banks. Energy, meanwhile, was one of the market's laggards after a court overturned approval for a coal project in the Hunter Valley. MACH Energy's big coal expansion at Mount Pleasant has hit a wall after NSW's court of appeal overturned its approval. It's a major legal shift that could put the brakes on future coal and gas projects across the state. The ruling rattled coal stocks, with Whitehaven Coal (ASX:WHC) down 3.5% and Yancoal Australia (ASX:YAL) off 1.5%. In other large cap news, WiseTech Global (ASX:WTC) has officially named Zubin Appoo as permanent CEO. He's no stranger to the company, having worked alongside founder Richard White back in the early days and returning now after stints at InLoop, Flexischools and HICAPS. WTC's shares were down 0.4%. And, The Lottery Corporation (ASX:TLC) has named Wayne Pickup as its next CEO, taking over from Sue van der Merwe in November. Shares edged down 0.5%. EU and US agree to trade deal with 15% tariffs for European exports

Frankfurt: The European Union has ended months of dispute with US President Donald Trump by accepting a deal that imposes 15 per cent tariffs on billions of dollars in exports, submitting to the terms out of concern he might otherwise punish Europe with higher penalties. The outcome appears set to lift prices for American consumers and hurt sales for European exporters, in the latest example of global brinksmanship as Trump forces tariffs on major economies in the hope of raising huge sums of revenue for the US government. In a surprise addition to the deal, the EU agreed to buy energy worth $US750 billion from the US over the years ahead – part of the bloc's broader objective of reducing reliance on Russian gas. Trump said the EU would also invest $US600 billion more in the US economy, echoing a vague investment pledge in a trade deal with Japan last week. The deal was unveiled in Scotland on Sunday during Trump's visit to his golf estates, as hundreds of protesters gathered to object to his visit, while supporters chanted his name outside some of his events. Loading 'I think this is the biggest deal ever made,' Trump told reporters after he emerged from talks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. European industries were divided on the trade dispute over recent weeks, with German car makers anxious to gain a deal because of the threat to their sales from even higher tariffs, while French industry canvassed retaliation against US demands. Von der Leyen confirmed the 15 per cent tariff applied 'across the board' and framed the outcome as a win for stability.

Thailand and Cambodia truce talks due but strikes continue

Thailand and Cambodia's leaders are due to meet for peace talks on Monday, as a festering territorial dispute along their shared frontier dragged into a fifth day of open combat. At least 35 people have been killed and more than 200,000 displaced since Thursday as the countries fight over a smattering of contested ancient temples. In an effort initiated by US President Donald Trump, Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Manet will meet at 3:00 pm (0700 GMT) in Kuala Lumpur. China is also expected to send a delegation. Ahead of the talks, Thailand and Cambodia traded fresh fire and accusations. "This is the fifth day that Thailand has invaded Cambodia's territory with heavy weapons and with the deployment of a lot of troops to grab Cambodia's land," said defence ministry spokeswoman Maly Socheata. The previous night, Thailand's military said Cambodian snipers were camping in one of the contested temples, and accused Phnom Penh of surging troops along the border and hammering Thai territory with rockets. It said fighting was ongoing at seven areas along the rural border region, marked by a ridge of hills surrounded by wild jungle and agricultural land where locals farm rubber and rice. "The situation remains highly tense, and it is anticipated that Cambodia may be preparing for a major military operation prior to entering negotiations," the Thai military statement read. On Saturday, Trump said he made a late-night call to both leaders, who had agreed to "quickly work out" a truce. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said the summit -- which will be mediated by Malaysian leader Anwar Ibrahim -- was also organised "with the participation of China" -- a key trade and political ally. "The purpose of this meeting is to achieve an immediate ceasefire, which was initiated by President Donald Trump and agreed to by both prime ministers of Cambodia and Thailand," Hun Manet said. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that US officials "are on the ground in Malaysia to assist these peace efforts", while Anwar told domestic media he would focus on securing an "immediate ceasefire". - Both sides point the finger - Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn marked his 73rd birthday on Monday, but a notice in the country's Royal Gazette said his public celebrations scheduled for Bangkok's Grand Palace have been cancelled amid the strife. Both Thailand and Cambodia have agreed in principle to a truce -- but accused each other of undermining armistice efforts and of firing first. Trump has threatened both countries with eye-watering levies in his global tariff blitz unless they agree to independent trade deals. "When all is done, and Peace is at hand, I look forward to concluding our Trading Agreements with both!" he wrote on social media. But each side has also blamed the other for undermining peace efforts. The Thai foreign ministry accused Cambodian forces of firing shells into civilian homes in Surin province. "Any cessation of hostilities cannot be reached while Cambodia is severely lacking in good faith," the ministry said. Meanwhile, Cambodia's defence ministry accused Thailand of "deliberate and coordinated acts of aggression". Thailand says eight of its soldiers and 14 civilians have been killed, while Cambodia has confirmed eight civilian and five military deaths. The Thai military said it had returned the bodies of 12 Cambodian soldiers killed in combat. The conflict has forced more than 138,000 people from Thailand's border regions, and 80,000 have been driven from their homes in Cambodia. The Cambodian government has also accused Thai forces of using cluster munitions, while Bangkok has accused Phnom Penh of targeting hospitals. With the conflict enflaming nationalist sentiments, Thailand issued a warning to its citizens to "refrain from any kind of violence, whether in speech or action" against Cambodian migrants living in the country.
