Shelter Saves Abandoned Dog Left Tied to Pole in 'Freezing' Va. Weather, Asks Pup's Former Owner to 'Do Better'
A rescue dog is safe and warm after being abandoned in Virginia's recent cold snap.
On Friday, Jan. 17, Richmond Animal Care and Control (RACC) shared on social media that the pup — a black male pit bull mix, the shelter confirmed to PEOPLE — had been discovered tied to a bus pole by a leash and left in dangerous weather the night before.
"To the person who left their dog tied to the bus line pole in the freezing cold last night. Do better. 🤬," the shelter posted on Facebook.
"To the kind citizen who called Richmond Animal Care and Control to help. Thank you. ♥️ #weareyourcityshelter," they added.
RACC shared the information alongside two photos of the dumped dog; one shows the canine along and abandoned by the side of the road in the dark, and the other features a smiling RACC staff holding the pup following his rescue.

Per local ABC-affiliated station WRIC, the dog was left "near the intersection of Chambers Street and Bowen Street in the city's Southside."
RACC spokesperson Christie Chipps-Peters told PEOPLE in an email that the dog is now "doing great" after his rescue. "We are investigating the case," she added.
Virginia law states, "No person shall abandon or dump any animal. Violation of this section is a Class 1 misdemeanor."
Per the National Weather Service, some areas of Richmond reached a low of 13 degrees on the night the pup was likely left out in the cold.
The latest rescue comes after Chipps-Peters urged people to stop abandoning animals while speaking to NBC-affiliated station WWBT in September 2024.

She explained that after an abandoned pet or stray is picked up off the street, there is a "holding period" at the open-admission shelter during which the animal cannot be available for adoption to leave time for the original owner to claim the pet.
"The shelter should be your absolute last resort. It's stressful, we euthanize, we don't want your pet there," the spokesperson said, per the outlet. Owners looking to rehome a pet should seek out no-kill rescues for assistance or other options, like family and friends, before surrendering an animal to a kill shelter or abandoning them for animal control to find.
"Pets who have been loved and treated well don't do well in our shelter," Chipps-Peters added, according to the station.
The Richmond pup isn't the only dog abandoned in freezing weather over the several weeks of winter; as PEOPLE reported, a 2-year-old Bichon Frisé was found by maintenance workers in a dumpster at the Glenwood Apartments in Old Bridge, New Jersey, on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Additionally, KC Pet Project rescued a caged dog left abandoned on the streets of Kansas City, Missouri, during a blizzard. The dog is now "living her best life" while she waits for a forever home.

A few days before Robyn Kincade and Blake Panarisi's May 31 wedding at Flora Farms in San José del Cabo, Mexico, it became clear that a tropical storm was headed their way. The couple's wedding planner Sarah Wintersteen, owner of Sistered States, began taking precautionary measures for the completely outdoor venue, suggesting that the pair get a tent. However, the manager of Flora Farms noted that "rain in Cabo is so rare" and that after 18 years of working at the venue, she's only seen it rain on a wedding day four times. So, the day before their wedding, the bride and groom decided to not get a tent. "I quoted the tent to the couple, and they decided to take their chances and hope that the storm would weaken or move courses," Wintersteen tells PEOPLE. With a "tropical cyclone warning" in the area, Wintersteen didn't want to risk the couple and their 160 guests getting drenched by heavy rain all day, so she decided to take measures into her own hands. "As a planner, I was working with all the vendors on the best course of action," Wintersteen explains. "I had seen some other people online mention hiring an Etsy witch to make rain go away on their wedding day so I figured, why not?" "It was completely for fun and for the plot — we already have multiple rain plans in place and were not relying on an Etsy witch to fix our problems but if there was even a 0.0001% chance it was going to work, I was willing to spend $9 to try!" Wintersteen says. Because the witch needed the bride's birthdate, Wintersteen made sure to get the couple's permission before hiring them. "I purchased the 'perfect wedding spell' so technically not a weather spell, but the spell promised that the couple would have a 'perfect wedding day,' " Wintersteen says. "The page said they cast spells within 24 hours of receiving the order and I received confirmation from the Etsy page that our 'spell had been cast.' " Kincade and Panarisi were admittedly "a little stressed about the rain" in the days leading up to their wedding, but after they decided against the tent "a lot of the stress went away." "We all decided that we were going to embrace whatever was going to happen!" Wintersteen shares. Around 10 a.m. on the wedding day, it started to rain and "did not let up all day." "The ceremony started at 5:30 p.m. and the reception ended at 11p.m. — it rained the entire time!" Wintersteen recalls. Locals prepare for hot temperatures up to 90 degrees this week
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Things are heating up outside in western Mass., with locals sharing how they are preparing for the 90-degree heat. We were in the 80s on Wednesday, but temperatures are expected to be up into the 90s on Thursday. During most of the month of May, western Massachusetts experienced some cooler-than-average temperatures, but now we're seeing a big change. Growing Wildlife Program supports pollinators throughout Mass. Temperatures are on the rise, and so is the humidity. People were enjoying the warmer, but still fairly comfortable, conditions at Forest Park in Springfield on Wednesday. Some people said they are looking forward to the summer-like temperatures that are on the way. 'The weather's hot, so it's good to do some exercise and do some things out of the house and things like that,' said Karelys Garcia of Chicopee. 'I love to go to, with my girls, to the park with water.' Our average high temperature for this time of year at Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee is right around 76 degrees, and our average low temperatures are usually in the mid-50s. Temperatures are expected to make it up into the 90s by the end of the week, so it's important to take precautions if you plan to be outside. 'To stay cool, drink a lot of water,' said Kadeja Miller of Springfield. 'We swim, cover ourselves with hats, blankets, try to stay in the shade.' In addition to the heat, smoke from the wildfires in Canada is making for very hazy conditions and poor air quality as well.
