Top MN Twins Prospect Hurt Again

The Minnesota Twins made it through Spring Training with a relatively clean bill of health. They needed to do a bit of roster shuffling at the end of Grapefruit League action due to Royce Lewis and Brooks Lee being injured. They are 0-1 in regular season action after losing on Opening Day.
Earlier in camp both Emmanuel Rodriguez and Walker Jenkins were slowed by ankle issues. Rodriguez missed a significant amount of time last year due to a thumb injury that ultimately required surgery.

Friday night the St. Paul Saints kicked off their season in a cold home opener. Rodriguez was cleared and played in that game. He is now already out of the lineup.
Emmanuel Rodriguez scratched from Minnesota Twins Triple-A lineup
Last season Emmanuel Rodriguez finished the year at Triple-A St. Paul for the Minnesota Twins. He played in just 47 games during the year after suffering a thumb injury. Ultimately it required surgery. Rodriguez went 3-for-4 on Opening Day this year, but now is dealing with a jammed thumb.
The severity of Rodriguez's thumb injury is not known. However, he was originally scheduled to bat third as the designated hitter for St. Paul on Saturday. During the 11-0 victory against Indianapolis, Rodriguez had two singles and a double. He did not steal a base, but did break for second (and slid in head first) before being called back on a foul ball. He did leave the game nor was there any indication of an injury.
Hopefully this is more the Saints being cautious with Rodriguez. He is a consensus top 25 prospect across all of baseball and has the potential to be a difference maker for the Minnesota Twins as early as this season.

St. Paul wound up postponing their scheduled tilt on Saturday against the Indians. That allows another day for Rodriguez to heal and get back to full strength. It's possible Sunday's game sees the same fate, and that would keep Rodriguez on the shelf until Tuesday in Columbus at least.
Across 231 minor league games, Rodriguez has an incredible .457 on-base percentage. He has hit 44 home runs and stolen 49 bases. There is a significant amount of speed to his game, but given the continued issues with his thumb, Minnesota should think about mandating he slide feet first.
Rodriguez being back in the lineup quickly would certainly be a positive development. For such an outstanding talent, he can't continue to be unavailable due to injuries.

A new generation learns Rich Rodriguez's demanding coaching style at West Virginia
Rich Rodriguez won four Big East championships in seven seasons during his first stint at West Virginia, coming one haunting loss short of reaching college football's national championship game. Fans who endured mediocrity for the past six seasons under previous coach Neal Brown are counting on Rodriguez to resurrect the magic that produced double-digit wins in his final three seasons with the Mountaineers from 2005-07. That could take some time. If nothing else since Rodriguez was hired from Jacksonville State last December, they've had Sept. 13 circled, when West Virginia hosts archrival Pittsburgh, whose 13-9 win as a heavy underdog in Rodriguez's final game at WVU still stings. Two weeks later, Rodriguez left for Michigan. A huge roster turnover will make it challenging for Rodriguez to compete right away for a Big 12 championship. West Virginia hasn't won a title since joining the league in 2012 and hasn't been ranked since 2018, the last time it had back-to-back winning seasons. Soft play not tolerated So far, Rodriguez isn't happy about the depth at any position. 'I like my team, I just don't feel better about where we're at,' he said. 'We've got time.' Rodriguez has always used a no-huddle, up-tempo offense and is no less demanding now than when he first arrived at his alma mater in 2001. He has no tolerance for a lack of hard, physical play. Angered by such at a preseason practice, he stopped the drills and made his players run as punishment. 'Way too many moments of softness,' Rodriguez said. 'It can't ever be allowed. Up front, the O-line and D-line sometimes look like they're tango dancing instead of playing football. People say, 'You like to yell.' No, I like to win.' Offense potential Among the few returning players are the heart of the offense. Running back Jahiem White ran for 845 yards and seven scores as a sophomore in Brown's platoon system and could see his carries balloon behind a new offensive line in Rodriguez's run-based attack. The starting quarterback won't be revealed until the Aug. 30 season opener against Robert Morris. Nicco Marchiol won both of his 2024 starts and has played in 19 career games. He's competing with Texas A&M transfer Jaylen Henderson, who did not play last season, and Charlotte transfer Max Brown. 'We want to be the fastest team in America,' Marchiol said. 'This offense, I feel, fits me so well.' There are no returning receivers who had more than 300 yards a year ago. Sophomore Cam Vaughn had 48 catches for 803 yards and five TDs for Rodriguez at Jacksonville State. Legends return Rodriguez brought a pair of his most accomplished players back as assistant coaches. Pat White, who went 35-8 as a starting quarterback and won four bowl games from 2005-09, is an assistant under Rodriguez's son, quarterbacks coach Rhett Rodriguez. Noel Devine, second in school history with 5,761 all-purpose yards, is an offensive analyst and assistant running backs coach. Defense needs help West Virginia was among the Big 12's worst defenses last season. Defensive coordinator Zac Alley, who arrived from Oklahoma, has one returning player with limited starting experience: linebacker Reid Carrico. The schedule The Pitt game will be the last in the series until 2029. The Panthers have won two of three meetings since the rivalry resumed in 2022. West Virginia's league opener is Sept. 20 at Kansas. Among ranked teams, West Virginia plays No. 11 Arizona State and No. 23 Texas Tech to end the regular season but does not face No. 17 Kansas State or No. 22 Iowa State.

How Mariners will win AL West over Astros
The post How Mariners will win AL West over Astros appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Seattle Mariners are contenders for the World Series, currently sitting just one game behind the Houston Astros in the American League West. The Mariners' division title hopes will rely on certain things going well, as they look to surpass the Astros. Notably, they win the AL West if they can do the little things that helped put them in a position to contend. The Mariners-Astros rivalry will see one more battle in September, and it could determine everything. The Mariners recently had a great 10-game stretch, which has helped them climb back into the AL West race after struggling at certain parts of the season. Currently, Seattle has +150 odds to win the AL West. There is certainly a chance for the M's to pull off the division title win. However, there are a few things they need to do. Seattle has achieved a lot of success this season due to several factors. Yet, if they cannot sustain that, their journey to the playoffs will be tougher. Here is what the M's need to do if they wish to win the AL West: Mariners' division title hopes rely on power The Mariners have some power, and that has certainly been evident this season. Remarkably, Cal Raleigh has emerged, batting .243 while clobbering 45 home runs, driving in 98 runners, and scoring 78 runs. Randy Arozarena has also been hot, batting .248 with 23 home runs, 57 RBIs, and 70 runs. Additionally, Julio Rodriguez has been solid, hitting .258 with 23 home runs, 65 RBIs, and 79 runs. In addition to these three, the M's also have Eugenio Suarez, who has hit .234 with 37 home runs, 92 RBIs, and 70 runs for both the M's and Arizona Diamondbacks. Now, there is a golden opportunity for these four big bats to continue slugging the baseball. Can they sustain it? The M's currently rank fourth in baseball in home runs and 11th in slugging percentage. Alarmingly, the team also strikes out a lot. Cal Raleigh is a major example. While his numbers are off the charts in hitting, according to Baseball Savant, he also whiffs a lot. Rodriguez, Arozarena, and Suarez have similar issues. While they are hot right now, they must avoid chasing bad pitches. The defense continues to make plays The Mariners' defense has made some plays, and it is another weapon they have added to their arsenal. Amazingly, they are fifth in fielding percentage. That means they are doing a great job of getting hitters out. Yes, they have an elite pitching staff, with a starting rotation and a bullpen that have been in the top 10. In addition to his elite hitting, Raleigh has been great in the field. So far, he has just three errors and has already won the 2024 Gold Glove and the Platinum Glove. Rodriguez has also been elite in the outfield, showing an amazing ability to contain fly balls, line drives, and anything else that is hard hit in his direction. Pitching and defense win championships. If the M's can continue to defend well, they certainly have a chance to win the AL West and surpass the Astros. Randy Arozarena stays hot Arozarena has been hot with the bat and has also demonstrated his ability on the basepaths. Now, the trick is to keep it up. The metrics say that his barrel and hard-hit percentage are elite. However, like many of his teammates, he whiffs a lot and strikes out. When the M's traded for Arozarena last season, they expected to get a power bat. That is not what happened. Instead, he went cold down the stretch. Arozarena has been great against the Astros, batting .316 with one home run, two RBIs, and six runs against them this season. Significantly, he had a grand slam against them in July. The M's will have a three-game series against the Astros in September. When they visit Daikin Park, they need Arozarena to supply the power. The month of September will provide the M's and Arozarena with plenty of good opportunities, as they are playing six teams that are currently out of the playoff race. Also, they will end the regular season against the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers. With more power in the lineup, there is less pressure on Arozarena to do it all. Still, the Mariners' division title hopes will strongly depend on how they handle the rest of their schedule and whether their hitters can continue to produce. It could be the difference between opening up the playoffs against the New York Yankees or facing the Boston Red Sox. Either way, a division title gives them a better chance at a World Series title. Mick Abel settling in with Minnesota Twins organization following trade
"Tough not having my car quite yet, so I haven't really gotten a chance to go out and explore that much," smiled new St. Paul Saints starting pitcher Mick Abel. Abel is in new territory. He is a former first-round, 15th overall draft pick by the Philadelphia Phillies. The Minnesota Twins acquired him two weeks ago in the trade that sent closer Jhoan Duran to Philadelphia. "When it happened, I was like, 'Oh wow.' It kinda hit me like a ton of bricks," said Abel. "It was hard saying 'see ya' to a lot of the staff and a lot of my teammates, just because I've been with them for so long. You build that many relationships over a five-year span, and in the snap of your fingers, they're gone." The Twins traded a whopping 10 players ahead of the July 31 deadline. Abel will always be tied to that landmark day. Derek Falvey, president of baseball operations for the Twins, says the goal is not to bottom out, but reload for next year. If that works, guys like Abel will be key. "In some cases, some of these guys were up in the big leagues, sent down to the minor leagues and have a plan for some adjustments they wanna make," said Falvey. "We wanna make sure they're settled, they're on the right track, that we all align on a plan. And hopefully we'll see more of them as the season wears on." Abel made his big league debut earlier this season. He was sent down on the Fourth of July carrying a 5.04 ERA. "It was really formative, just to who I am right now," said Abel. "I go up and I think I got a little too curious, dove a little too deep into what I should be doing every week. I kind of got away from my strengths. So, when I got sent back down, the message was, go back to doing what you do well." Expect to see Abel get called up later in August or in September. The Twins want to see what they got. "Their biggest message to me was, 'Let's get you acclimated,'" said Abel. "Let's get you working on a couple different things and go from there."
