Champions Chelsea complete unbeaten season

Express Tribune11-05-2025

Chelsea completed an unbeaten season and set a points record in the Women's Super League with a 1-0 home win over Liverpool on Saturday and Arsenal held on for a 4-3 victory over Manchester United to finish second in the standings.
Chelsea, who sealed their sixth consecutive WSL title last month, were unable to break down Liverpool's defence until the 91st minute when Ashley Lawrence played in Aggie Beever-Jones and the England international produced an excellent right-foot shot from a tight angle.
Chelsea, record eight-times champions, finished with 19 wins and three draws to earn 60 points - the highest total in a WSL season. They also became the first team to go unbeaten in a 22-match WSL campaign, though Arsenal (2012), Manchester City (2016) and Chelsea (2017-18) have achieved the feat in previous seasons with fewer games.
"We've just worked hard right until the end. Liverpool came with a game plan and defended really well," Chelsea midfielder Erin Cuthbert told Sky Sports ahead of the club's trophy celebrations at Stamford Bridge.
"We just had to keep at it, use the momentum, use the fans and Aggie got that goal at the end. I thought the girls run them down and made the job as a substitute really easily in the second half. Credit to everyone in the group." At the Emirates Stadium, Chloe Kelly scored in the second minute to give Arsenal an early lead but United's Ella Toone levelled in the 13th minute, before strikes from Mariona Caldentey, Frida Maanum and Kim Little put the hosts in the driving seat.
Renee Slegers' team endured a nerve-wracking finish to the match as Elisabeth Terland and Maya Le Tissier scored but United could not complete the comeback.
Arsenal, who face Barcelona in the Women's Champions League final this month, ended the season with 48 points, four ahead of third-placed United.

Jon Jones announces UFC retirement after Baku event, hands heavyweight title to Tom Aspinall

Jon Jones announced his retirement from the UFC on Saturday, shortly after UFC Baku concluded, confirming news that UFC President Dana White had first shared during the event's post-fight press conference. The announcement effectively ends one of the most dominant and controversial careers in MMA history. At 37, Jones exits amid prolonged uncertainty about his future in the heavyweight division, including a repeatedly delayed unification bout with interim champion Tom Aspinall. Jones' retirement also means Aspinall is now recognized as the undisputed UFC Heavyweight Champion, a change White confirmed during the press conference. 'Today, I'm officially announcing my retirement from the UFC,' Jones posted on X (formerly Twitter). He expressed gratitude for his journey, thanking the UFC, Dana White, fellow fighters, and others in the MMA community. 'As I close this chapter of my life, I look forward to new opportunities and challenges ahead,' he added. The sudden announcement caught many fans and analysts off guard. With no prior hints, the retirement has left room for speculation about Jones' next move. Some wondered whether he might still compete outside of the UFC, possibly reviving long-rumored matchups such as a fight with Francis Ngannou. One user posted, 'Are we actually going to get the Ngannou fight?' while others criticized Jones for retiring without facing Aspinall. Some fans voiced doubts over the finality of the decision. 'Your ego won't allow you to retire. You'll be back,' one comment read. While his future remains uncertain, Jon Jones' departure marks the end of an era — one that redefined dominance and controversy in mixed martial arts.

Harry Kane shines as Bayern Munich beat Boca Juniors to reach CWC knockouts

England captain Harry Kane played a decisive role in Bayern Munich's 2-1 victory over Boca Juniors on June 20, sending his side into the FIFA Club World Cup knockout stage with a game to spare. Kane opened the scoring in the 18th minute, finishing calmly from 10 yards out following sustained Bayern pressure. HARRY KANE!!! HURRICANE 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿⚽️ — FC Bayern Brasileiro (@FCBayernXtra) June 21, 2025 Boca levelled through Miguel Merentiel, who curled in a well-placed equaliser early in the second half. With just six minutes remaining, Kane provided the decisive moment again — poking the ball through to Michael Olise. The former Crystal Palace winger struck a composed, side-footed winner from the edge of the box to seal Bayern's place in the next round. 'Big performance from the guys,' Kane told DAZN after being named player of the match. 'We knew it wasn't going to be easy and we knew we were coming into a hostile environment. It is great to get the goal and qualify.' Kane added: 'It is a massive tournament, playing against the best teams in the world, but it is us against us. That is the mindset and we have to compete at our best level. So far, so good.' Harry Kane's post game interview 🎙️ — Bayern & Football (@MunichFanpage) June 21, 2025 Bayern need just a point against Benfica in their final Group B fixture to guarantee top spot. That could set up a last-16 meeting with Chelsea, should the Premier League side finish second in their group. Enzo Maresca's Chelsea currently sit second after falling 3-1 to Flamengo on Friday. The only concern for Vincent Kompany's side was the sight of Jamal Musiala limping off midway through the second half, having only come on as a substitute. The extent of the Germany midfielder's injury remains unclear. Boca Juniors' defeat ended a nine-match unbeaten run for South American teams in this revamped tournament. The Argentine club still have a slim chance of progressing, but would need Benfica to lose heavily and must overturn a seven-goal swing.

Jon Jones believes 'humble' Francis Ngannou could return to the UFC

Jon Jones believes a UFC return for Francis Ngannou isn't off the table, despite UFC CEO Dana White recently dismissing the idea. Ngannou left the UFC in 2023 after failed contract negotiations, exiting as the reigning heavyweight champion before signing with the Professional Fighters League (PFL). White, when asked about a potential reunion with Ngannou, replied with a brief 'Probably not.' Jones, however, thinks otherwise. 'I think Dana gets things done,' Jones said on the Full Send Podcast. 'I think business speaks before emotions. If Francis presents himself in a humble way, I think that he could very easily be back in the UFC.' Ngannou and White's split was far from cordial, but Jones argued that time and opportunity have a way of reshaping relationships — even those with deep fractures. 'Dana White is one of the best sports minds in recent history for a reason, and money talks,' said Jones. 'Francis brings eyes, and I'm sure Dana will be interested. He can be stubborn. I think I'm an example. People grow and mature, and time changes things. There were moments in my career where I felt like Dana absolutely hated me. Now I feel he's a big advocator for me," he added. Jones (28-1 MMA, 22-1 UFC), the current heavyweight champion, has shown little interest in a unification bout with interim champ Tom Aspinall. But a long-hyped showdown with Ngannou remains a fight fans and fighters alike continue to speculate on. Whether White and Ngannou can find common ground remains uncertain. But for Jones, the door is still open — and business, as always in combat sports, could come first.
