He said: "I visited friends but on day two my back went and I ended up laid up for the majority of the time.
'When I went out for a walk in the evening, doubled over in pain, I looked down and noticed that the manhole covers were a work of art in themselves.
'I took abstract photographs of them and even managed to sell them, so I kept going.'
Peter, 63, from Barry, Glamorgan, runs Facebook group Manhole Covers Around the World, with 65,000 members.

He visited Spain, France and Sri Lanka to search out designs.
The artist's books include Heavy Metal and Manc Holes and Beyond, which he wrote with the Manchester Manhole Collective.
The group launched the world's first manhole exhibition, Manc Holes and Beyond, which ran from April to June at Manchester Central Library.
The exhibition proved such a success, celebrating the art and design of manhole covers, that he is now in talks with the National Lottery Heritage fund to move the manhole exhibition out of Manchester to tour the rest of the UK.

SOMETIMES the best place to hide is in plain sight. Just look at Oasis fan Advertisement 8 Oasis fan John Spilsbury saw their Manchester gig for free by disguising himself as a litter picker Credit: Facebook 8 Sun man Tom Bryden tests the high-vis jacket theory Credit: Darren Fletcher Put on a high-vis jacket and walk with enough confidence, and you can get in anywhere — or so the theory goes. It might seem odd that making yourself so visible actually makes you invisible. But this reflective piece of clothing might be all you need to walk past security unchallenged. Would it let me sneak into some of London's biggest tourist attractions without paying a penny? ODEON CINEMA THE Odeon Cinema on Leicester Square hosts many of the big blockbuster premieres. And access to the screens is firmly blocked off by a bunch of guys with seemingly one job, and one job only – to stop me getting in. The man on the door was itching to ask for my £18 ticket, but I looked him dead in the eye and gave a firm nod. Not a word was spoken and I was on my way to watch How To Train Your Dragon. Advertisement As a man clearly here for business not leisure, I tried to appear mildly irritated by the hold-up but too polite to hurry anyone. It worked, because when I got to the front I was ushered in with an air of apology. I certainly enjoyed the exhibition too – not least because I'd avoided the £20 fee. Who are The Young Wolfe Tones?

Irish rebel band The Wolfe Tones played what they say is their last ever performance at Limerick's Thomond Park on Sunday to a packed stadium. The trio, comprised of Brian Warfield, Tommy Byrne and Noel Nagle, were set to retire last year but announced two further gigs at the Limerick stadium for their Final Farewell, having enjoyed a particular resurgence in recent years. The band were formed in 1963 by Brian and Noel who were joined by their neighbour Liam Courtney. The following year, Brian's brother Derek came on board, and then Tommy joined the band, replacing Liam. The four-piece went on for almost 37 years before Derek left the band in 2001. Derek had been performing solo alongside his band duties, and continued with his solo career up until 2006. Following his departure, Brian, Tommy and Noel continued as a three-piece. The band is comprised of six members with Derek leading, along with Damaris Woods, Andreas Durkin, Eddie Kane, Paddy McGrandles and Brent Hopper. Pic: The Young Wolfe Tones/ Facebook They went by the name Brian Warfield, Tommy Byrne and Noel Nagle, formerly of the Wolfe Tones and released their song, You'll Never Beat the Irish along with the album Child of Destiny. Since Derek's departure from the band, his relationship with his brother has been frayed with the pair revealing in 2017 that they hadn't spoken since the split apart from an on air argument in 2009. This took place on Liveline when a discussion began on who owned the rights to the band name, with Brian at the time noting his brother was 'getting restless and wanted to do his own thing.' Last year, The Wolfe Tones celebrated their 60th anniversary. Meanwhile, while Derek pursued a solo career which boasted 11 albums he also formed The Young Wolfe Tones. The band is comprised of six members with Derek leading, along with Damaris Woods, Andreas Durkin, Eddie Kane, Paddy McGrandles and Brent Hopper. The band have a number of concerts coming up, with a certain crossover between The Wolfe Tones due to Warfield's connection to both. For more information go here.
