Chairman of the Mohajir Qaumi Movement (MQM-H), Afaq Ahmed, on Saturday alleged that a motorcycle was deliberately placed under a dumper truck in the UP Mor area to film a video and create the impression of ethnic violence in the city.
Speaking at a press conference, Ahmed claimed that the incident was orchestrated and the individuals who set the dumper on fire were not arrested, while several innocent citizens and his party workers were detained.
He said the incident was used to sabotage growing public support for his stance, which he believes has led to an informal alliance between the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). 'Efforts are being made to give an ethnic colour to our movement,' he added.
Ahmed stated that his party had called for a peaceful protest involving all communities affected by issues in Karachi, including high traffic volumes, poor access to education, and alleged systemic discrimination in public sector jobs.
'Dumpers don't identify people by ethnicity,' he said, urging authorities to take action against the so-called 'dumper mafia'. He claimed that no arrests were made of those responsible for setting the vehicles ablaze.
He also criticised the enforcement of Section 144 in District Central, calling it a reaction to the MQM-H's successful mobilisation efforts. Ahmed stated that political workers from other parties could gather without restrictions, but MQM-H protests were being treated as a threat.
Addressing the government and law enforcement, Ahmed said his party was not seeking confrontation and had urged supporters to carry white flags as a symbol of peace. 'We only wanted the government to take notice of our grievances,' he said.
Ahmed also accused MQM of avoiding criticism of PPP's governance and questioned why his workers faced legal action for protest planning while no action was taken against similar statements made by MQM leadership.
He reiterated that his party did not promote ethnic division and said the recent events were being manipulated to portray MQM-H as a disruptive force. He demanded that those involved in staging the UP Mor incident be arrested and brought to justice.
Ahmed concluded by saying that his party would continue advocating for Karachi's rights and called for a stronger organisational presence in District Central.
The controversy surrounding the UP Mor incident began after a high-speed dumper collided with multiple motorcyclists near the North Karachi Power House, injuring three people.
As a video of the incident went viral, angry residents took to the streets in protest.Several heavy vehicles including five dumpers, one water tanker, and a truck were set on fire at different locations across the city.

Bilawal urges India to end ‘excuses', resume dialogue with Pakistan

Former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Saturday urged India to move beyond what he termed 'repetitive excuses' and engage in meaningful dialogue with Pakistan to address long-standing bilateral issues. Speaking at a press conference in Washington following a series of meetings with US lawmakers, policy experts and think tanks, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman criticized New Delhi's reluctance to resume talks, saying it was counterproductive to regional peace. 'India continues to evade efforts for dialogue and investigations. The excuses vary, be it civil-military dynamics, geopolitics, or blanket narratives linking Muslims with terrorism, but they all serve the same purpose: avoidance,' Bilawal said. Bilawal Bhutto warns of escalating water disputes with India, calls for diplomatic engagement 'It's not sustainable for two nuclear-armed neighbours with such low conflict thresholds to lack any structured dispute resolution mechanism.' The former foreign minister is part of a high-level Pakistani delegation currently visiting key Western capitals as part of a diplomatic outreach initiative aimed at presenting Islamabad's stance on recent tensions with India. The delegation, which includes senior political figures and former diplomats, will also visit London and Brussels in the coming days. Alongside Bilawal, the group includes former foreign ministers Hina Rabbani Khar and Khurram Dastgir Khan, Senators Sherry Rehman, Musadik Malik, Faisal Sabzwari and Bushra Anjum Butt, as well as seasoned diplomats Jalil Abbas Jilani and Tehmina Janjua. Bilawal emphasized that Pakistan's civil and military leadership are united in their stance against terrorism, and that dialogue with India is essential for regional stability. He reiterated Islamabad's openness to talks at both political and military levels. 'If India truly seeks peace, it must be willing to engage, whether through direct talks or through mediation by international stakeholders,' he said. 'Unfortunately, New Delhi has rejected all options, be it engagement through the UN, third-party mediation, or bilateral diplomacy.' He further stressed that reversing decisions that have escalated tensions would be a constructive step forward. 'It is in everyone's interest, including India's, to revisit policies that have only led to a diplomatic freeze and increased hostility.' The Pakistani delegation's engagement in Washington is seen as part of a broader attempt to counter India's expanding diplomatic footprint and narrative, particularly in Western capitals.

Punjab gears up for safe, clean Eid

The Punjab government has launched an extensive security and sanitation operation across the province to ensure public safety and maintain hygiene during the three-day religious festival. A centralised coordination system involving the Home Department, police, local governments and waste management companies has been activated. Officials say the integrated effort aims to deliver a safe and clean environment for citizens celebrating Eid. A round the clock Central Control Room has been established in Lahore under the supervision of the Punjab Home Secretary. The Directorate General Public Relations (DGPR), the control room will monitor all districts around the clock and coordinate law enforcement efforts and government directives. Enforcement of Section 144 has been put in place in several areas of the province. The orders prohibit public slaughter of animals, swimming or boating in rivers, canals, or dams, and the disposal of animal waste into manholes or waterways. Additional bans include the use of fireworks, drones, laser lights, pigeon flying, and installation of temporary mechanical rides within a 15-kilometre radius of any airport or airbase. The home department also announced a crackdown on unauthorised collection of animal hides. "No proscribed organisation will be allowed to collect hides," a spokesperson stated. Only registered and certified charities with the Punjab Charity Commission will be permitted to do so. Lahore police have finalised an elaborate security plan for Eid, deploying over 9,000 personnel across the city. The operation will be supervised by 6 Superintendents of Police (SPs), 22 Sub-Divisional Police Officers (SDPOs), and 83 Station House Officers (SHOs). The Dolphin and PRU forces will be on high alert, with more than 1,600 officers in the field, supported by 700 traffic officers to manage Eid traffic. The Punjab Safe Cities Authority will monitor Eid congregations, mosques, and imambargahs through surveillance systems. "All religious gatherings will be under close watch, and any violation of the government's directives will result in strict action," said Lahore Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Bilal Siddique Kamyana. Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafiq described the sanitation plan as a "challenge," particularly as over 360,000 tons of animal waste are expected across the province during Eid. Speaking at a high-level meeting at the Civil Secretariat, the minister said the targets set by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz were "ambitious but achievable." To tackle the enormous cleanup task, 11.69 million biodegradable bags will be distributed. Over 124,000 sanitation workers, supported by 15,204 temporary recruits, will work under the Suthra Punjab programme. The operation will utilise 125,794 machines and vehicles, in addition to the existing 29,638 sanitation units. Officials have designated 3,870 primary collection points and 4,262 union council-level camps, along with 1,661 collective slaughter sites to discourage public slaughtering. To monitor cleanliness in real time, all waste management and municipal offices have established local control rooms, while the central control room in Lahore will oversee the province-wide operation. "There will be zero tolerance for negligence," said Minister Rafiq. "Photographic evidence of all cleaning activities must be submitted and public awareness campaigns must include participation from elected local representatives." Following Eid, authorities will spray rose water and phenyl on roads for sanitation. Additionally, 2.83 million kilograms of lime will be used to disinfect affected areas. Evening roadside sales of sacrificial animals have been strictly prohibited, and officials have been directed to conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance. "No reports of livestock-related diseases or dengue have been received so far," Minister Rafiq noted, confirming that Livestock, Municipal, and District Administration officers are working in close coordination. As the province gears up for the Eid holidays, the Punjab government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring a safe, hygienic, and peaceful environment for all citizens.
