Can OPS succeed where other AIADMK leaders who joined DMK failed?
The earliest case of a senior AIADMK leader turning a critic of the party was S.D. Somasundaram, who was Minister for Revenue, Commercial Taxes and Food in the Cabinet headed by M.G. Ramachandran during 1978-84, according to a perusal of materials available with The Hindu archives.
When he began openly accusing MGR of corruption, Somasundaram, also called SDS, was dismissed from the Cabinet and expelled from the AIADMK. In the 1984 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, he tried to strike a deal with the DMK, but the talks failed. SDS' party, Namadhu Kazhagam, fielded candidates in 150 Assembly constituencies and 15 Lok Sabha constituencies, but its performance was disastrous. SDS himself lost the deposit in his home constituency of Pattukottai, from where he was elected in 1980 on the AIADMK ticket. In 1986, he returned to his parent party. After the Dravidian major's defeat in 1996, SDS briefly aligned with rebels. Again, he led a party, Puratchi Thalaivar Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which merged with the AIADMK after his death in 2001.
S. Thirunavukkarasar [earlier known as S. Thirunavukkarasu], once a close aide of Jayalalithaa, fell out of favour with her on two occasions. Between 1988 and 1997, he was shown the door thrice. His expulsion in 1990 forced him to launch Anna Puratchi Thalaivar Tamizhaga Munnetra Kazhagam (APTTMK), with his colleagues including K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, now Revenue Minister with the DMK.
In the 1991 Assembly poll, the APTTMK tied up with the DMK and won two out of the nine seats it contested. Considering that the election took place against the backdrop of Rajiv Gandhi's assassination, the APTTMK's performance was considered impressive. Mr. Thirunavukkarasar, currently with the Congress, later renamed his party as MGR ADMK. After a brief reunion with Jayalalithaa during 1996-97, he revived his party and contested the 1998 Lok Sabha election as an ally of the Congress. In the now-abolished Pudukottai constituency, he finished third but polled about 2.26 lakh votes with a vote share of 29.28%. The following year, he was part of the DMK-led front and bagged the seat. However, he could not run his party for long, and merged it with the BJP a few years later.
R.M. Veerappan, once a powerful Minister in the MGR Cabinet, found himself on the wrong side when he was in the AIADMK led by Jayalalithaa. During her first term as Chief Minister (1991-96), Veerappan was dropped from the Jayalalithaa Cabinet in September 1995 in the wake of a controversy over what the party regarded as his silence when actor Rajnikanth, in his presence, talked of the 'bomb culture' in the State.
A veteran leader who was with the AIADMK says it is the party name and symbol that matter more than anything else, and this is why those who leave the party fade away.

Government meetings spark buzz of J&K statehood
High-level meetings on the eve of the sixth anniversary of the reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir that led to the bifurcation of the erstwhile state into two Union territories set off speculation on Monday that the Centre may start the process of restoring the region's statehood. A senior BJP leader, while refusing to comment on the speculation said: 'This is a promise that the government has already made…and it will be done when the time is right.' This person, who asked not to be named, attributed the speculation of 'a big ticket announcement' to the two major events that took place on August 5. The first was the Bill for Abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 and a year later, on the foundation ceremony of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. Modi and Shah separately calling on President Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan prompted rumours that the Centre may have a crucial bill on its agenda for the ongoing monsoon session that will end on August 21. To be sure, officials and party functionaries said the two leaders calling on the President was not unusual. 'The PM briefs the President on his foreign visits, the HM too meets her as required…' a second BJP functionary said. The meetings come in the backdrop of the impending vice presidential election that has been necessitated by the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar who announced his exit on July 21, citing ill health. The election to pick the new VP has been scheduled for September 9, with August 21 being the last date for filing nominations. The second party functionary said the process of shortlisting candidates and reaching out to the allies including the Telugu Desam Party and the Janata Dal (United) to elicit their support will be initiated by the BJP leadership. 'So far, all the names being mentioned in the media are speculative,' the second functionary said. Some party leaders however indicated that the candidate is unlikely to be a sitting Lok Sabha MP or someone who holds a gubernatorial position. A meeting of the NDA parliamentary party has also been scheduled for Tuesday, which is likely to be addressed by the PM. Although such meetings used to be routinely held during Parliament sessions, their frequency has dropped after 2024. The last such meeting of NDA lawmakers was held on July 2, 2024. All eyes are also on the announcement for the election of the BJP's new party president. The term of the incumbent JP Nadda was extended till June 2024, but the election process has been the party president is elected unopposed. While the constitutional requirements for the election have been met, elections to pick new state presidents in at least 50% of the states are over, but there has been no word on the reason for the delay in announcing the date for the election of the new party president. A few party leaders said the process may get underway after the election of the VP is over, while some others indicated that the incumbent may continue till state polls are held in Bihar later this year. But right now, everyone is holding their breath for August 5.

Cong MLA to join AGP before '26 polls
1 2 Silchar: In a significant development ahead of the 2026 assembly elections, Congress MLA from Karimganj South and former minister Siddeque Ahmed has announced his decision to join the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), a member of BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Ahmed said he held discussions with senior AGP leaders, including party president Atul Bora. "I have talked to the AGP leadership and finalised my decision to join the party. The Congress has no future in Assam under the current leadership," Ahmed added. Congress had suspended its Ahmed from the primary membership of the party in Apr, 2022 after he deliberately disobeyed the three-line whip issued by the party for the Rajya Sabha poll. A four-time MLA (one each from Samata Party and as Independent and two times as Congress) from the minority-dominated constituency, Ahmed has been a prominent face of Congress in the Barak Valley. He had earlier served as a cabinet minister in the Tarun Gogoi-led govt. Since his suspension from the party, Ahmed publicly criticised the functioning of the Congress in the state, but had not formally indicated any plans of switching allegiance — until now. Taking a swipe at Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, Ahmed said, "Congress under Gaurav Gogoi can't win the next Assembly elections. The party's performance in the last panchayat polls was a disaster. People have lost faith in the party." He added that several of his supporters and grassroots workers from Sribhumi district would also join the AGP in the coming days. "The AGP still commands respect among the people of Assam. My supporters and I will strengthen the NDA to ensure stability and development in the state," he the AGP leadership has not officially confirmed the date of Ahmed's induction, party insiders indicated that a formal joining ceremony may take place in Guwahati later this month. Ahmed's defection is being seen as a blow to the Congress in Barak Valley, a region where the party has traditionally held influence. With this move, the AGP also hopes to expand its footprint in the Bengali-speaking areas of southern Assam.
