Mint4 days ago

Indian stock market benchmarks—the Sensex and the Nifty 50—closed in positive territory on Thursday, May 29, snapping their two-day losing run on fag-end buying in select blue-chip stocks. The Sensex closed 321 points, or 0.39 per cent, higher at 81,633.02, with Infosys, Reliance Industries and HDFC Bank as top contributors. The Nifty 50 settled at 24,833.60, up 81 points, or 0.33 per cent.
The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices also ended with gains of 0.48 per cent and 0.39 per cent, respectively.
Volatility index India VIX plunged 9 per cent to 16.42.
The overall market capitalisation of BSE-listed firms rose to nearly ₹ 445.5 lakh crore from nearly ₹ 444 lakh crore in the previous session, making investors richer by about ₹ 1.5 lakh crore in a day.
The Indian stock market ended higher amid positive global cues after a US federal court blocked President Donald Trump's reciprocal tariffs announced on April 2.
The market witnessed some volatility due to the expiry of May futures and options (F&O) contracts. However, investors bought shares on dips, as the medium- to long-term outlook remains positive, supported by a healthy macroeconomic environment.
"Global sentiment improved after a US court struck down Trump's reciprocal tax policy. However, the domestic market remained mostly rangebound during the day due to rising oil prices and higher US 10-year bond yields," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited.
"Some recovery was seen toward the end of the session, driven by F&O expiry-led covering. Export-focused sectors like IT and pharma performed well, supported by hopes of easing trade tensions. Lack of positive domestic triggers and a drop in industrial output to an eight-month low could lead to short-term market consolidation," Nair said.
As many as 37 stocks closed higher in the Nifty 50 index.
Shares of IndusInd Bank (up 2.47 per cent), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (2 per cent), and Eternal (up 1.8 per cent) ended as the top gainers.
HDFC Life Insurance Company (down 1.07 per cent), BEL (down 0.81 per cent) and Tata Consumer Products (down 0.68 per cent) closed as the top loser stocks in the index.
Only Nifty PSU Bank (down 0.24 per cent) and FMCG (down 0.13 per cent) ended with losses among major sectoral indices.
Nifty Metal (up 1.21 per cent), Realty (up 1.14 per cent), Pharma (up 0.92 per cent) and IT (up 0.77 per cent) closed with healthy gains.
Nifty Bank and Financial Services indices rose 0.23 per cent and 0.10 per cent, respectively.
Vodafone Idea (34.32 crore shares), MMTC (20.17 crore shares) and IFCI (15.06 crore shares) were the most active stocks in terms of volume on the NSE.
MMTC, Hindustan Motors, Veto Switchgears and Cables, STL Global and Godavari Biorefineries were among the 17 stocks that jumped over 10 per cent on the NSE.
Denta Water and Infra Solutions (down 10.48 per cent) and Sandur Manganese & Iron Ores (down 10.41 per cent) were the two stocks that crashed more than 10 per cent on the NSE.
As many as 106 stocks, including MMTC, Zen Technologies, Hindustan Motors and KPI Green Energy, hit their upper circuits in intraday trade on the NSE.
On the other hand, 81 stocks, including Orchid Pharma, V2 Retail, Indo Tech Transformers, and Borana Weaves, hit lower circuits during the session.
As many as 1,510 stocks advanced, while 1,373 declined and 64 remained unchanged on the NSE.
Some 92 stocks, including Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, Deepak Fertilisers & Petrochemicals Corporation, Welspun Corp, Solar Industries India and Apollo Micro Systems, hit their 52-week highs in intraday trade on the BSE.

Markets in China, Malaysia, and New Zealand were closed for holidays, muting some of the early regional reactions. Trump also took to Truth Social to confirm the June 4 rollout, claiming the hike was in response to Chinas alleged breach of a recent trade agreement. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick backed the tariff decision over the weekend, saying the measures were not going anywhere, even as they face stiff legal resistance. A federal trade court had recently blocked much of Trumps tariff plans, but an appeals court swiftly reinstated them. The case now looks poised to head to the Supreme Court. Trump, undeterred, hinted hed use alternative mechanisms to enforce the tariffs if necessary. This legal showdown is unfolding just weeks ahead of a key July deadline to ink new trade deals. If those talks fall through, Trump has threatened sweeping new tariffs on several major economies.

India's GDP growth in Q4FY25 looked strong but hides weakness: Report

India's GDP growth for the January-March quarter of 2024-25 looked strong on the surface, but it hides several weaknesses, highlighted a report by Systematix Research. The report said the growth is still mainly driven by government spending, especially on construction, while the manufacturing sector remains weak. It said "the upside surprise in Indian 4QFY25 GDP growth makes a robust headline, but it masks underlying weaknesses. It continues to be dependent on public spending-led construction". The report mentioned that there are many signs that the headline GDP growth may not reflect the real state of the economy. For example, money supply grew much slower than nominal GDP, which raises questions about the accuracy of the growth numbers. Also, personal consumption spending grew much faster than the sales volume of consumer companies, showing a mismatch. While government capital spending rose sharply, private investment likely fell, showing that public spending is not creating the expected boost to the economy. Demand in the economy also remained low due to weak household income, slower retail lending, and lower government subsidies. Net indirect taxes rose to the highest level since June 2018, which further added to pressure on demand. The report said, "Despite a reduced external deficit, contraction in total trade indicates slowing global and domestic demand, highlighting a disconnect between reported GDP figures and the on-ground economic situation". Looking ahead, hopes are resting on rural consumption picking up, supported by a strong agriculture sector. But with private investment still weak and global conditions uncertain, recovery may remain slow. The Reserve Bank of India is expected to ease policies to support demand, especially if inflation stays low. However, the report notes that low inflation is mostly due to weak demand and incomes. The report added, "This bidirectional causality can be broken only with a turnaround in productive employment, which has been lacking in the wake of rising ruralisation and private capex". The report also warned of global risks, including panic buying in global trade ahead of possible new US tariffs under Trump, which could lead to stagflation in the US. This will not help India, as its trade-to-GDP ratio is already shrinking.

British entrepreneur of famous food brands bids an emotional goodbye to India in a viral LinkedIn post; See inside

Goodbyes are rarely easy, especially when you're leaving a place that has become more than just a stop on life's journey. Moments like these are emotional, nostalgic, and often full of gratitude. And when someone has spent years building not only a business but also a bond with a country, that goodbye becomes all the more meaningful. India has a way of leaving a deep impression on those who live and work here. With all its energy, warmth, and challenges, it's not just a place, it's an experience. Many people who come from abroad, expecting a short stay, often find themselves unexpectedly rooted. Be it the people, the culture, or the unpredictable positivity of daily life, something keeps them connected. Recently, a British entrepreneur who spent more than a decade in India shared his reflections on LinkedIn before returning to England with his family. What stood out wasn't just the business impact he made, but the genuine respect and love he developed for the country. After spending 12 years in India, British entrepreneur Jasper Reid, Founder and CEO of International Market Management (IMM), shared a moving post on LinkedIn as he prepared to return to England with his family. 'More than the three years we planned and just about enough to know how India works,' Reid wrote, summarising his long stay in a single sentence. Reid originally came to India on a short-term plan, but ended up staying much longer. During his time here, he played an important role in bringing PizzaExpress to India, and later helped launch Wendy's and Jamie's restaurants in 15 cities and 75 locations, creating thousands of jobs and making a lasting impact on India's food and hospitality sector. Reflecting on the experience, Reid said, 'What did we learn? Above all, we learnt patience, resilience, hard work, and hospitality. These values have declined in many countries, but are alive and well in India... Our privilege was to learn the market ground up, brick by brick, and over a long time. There is no substitute if you aim to succeed here.' His post also touched on the human side of their journey. During the COVID-19 lockdown, Reid and his team stepped up in a big way. 'We fed and helped a million people and bused thousands of migrant workers home,' he shared. Describing India, Reid wrote, 'At any time, India is rich in humanity, excitement, and challenge, but also intensely demanding, hard, and wearing. There's no country like it, and if GDP were measured in souls, India wins. We love India truly, madly and deeply.' He also had advice for Indian business owners, 'Set your people free. It's the best thing you will ever do.' According to Reid, empowering and trusting teams was key to his success here. Reid's family connection to India goes way back, as his grandfather helped build Kolkata's Dum Dum Airport, his father worked with HelpAge India, and his wife's uncle founded a school in Sikkim. His daughters, the fourth generation to live in India, have now finished school in Delhi. Even as they move back, Reid wrote, 'Now we have two parental homes and are not really leaving India but moving to the other side of a great, glorious, magic circle.'
