Cyber cons fake H'bag DC's profile on FB
But in a bold new recent case, cyber criminals created a fake account of Hazaribag deputy commissioner Nancy Sahay, a trend which is worrying, police said.

Befriending several people on Facebook, the fraudsters then sought money from them.
After the issue came to light, Sahay urged people to remain cautious on social media and not to blindly accept requests from strangers or suspects in any way.
A police officer in the cyber cell said, "This is a worrying trend where cyber criminals are misleading the public by exploiting the credibility of high-ranking officials and attempting to extort money from them.
Not only was a fake Facebook account of Sahay cretaed, but there was also a case of chatting with people with the intention of extorting money using her official photo."
The officer said that cyber criminals created a fake Facebook profile using the name, photo, and designation of the DC.
Friend requests were then sent to people from this fake profile, making them believe they are connecting with Sahay herself. Once a person accepted the friend request, the criminals demand money through Facebook Messenger by making various excuses.
This can be in the name of a personal emergency, a donation for a project, or any other type of help.
According to police officials, cheating by creating a fake account in the name of a DC is a serious cybercriminal case. Taking the issue seriously, police officials said efforts were underway to trace the fraudsters using digital footprints and arrest them.
Meanwhile, Sahay appealed to all residents of the district, officials, relatives, and well-wishers not to react in any way to such fake Facebook accounts and to report and block them.

A Facebook friendship ends in murder
Berhampur: What began as a virtual friendship on Facebook in 2019 ended in a spine-chilling tale of betrayal and murder at Sreema Nagar here. The case, which has shaken Ganjam district, unfolded when 32-year-old Chitrasen Swain lodged a complaint on August 11 stating the brutal killing of his sister, Gayatri Swain, and the grievous attack on her 11-year-old daughter, Neelam. According to police, the accused, initially identified as Sunil Swain (27), had developed a secret relationship with Gayatri while working in Mumbai. Despite her marriage to Sadhu Charan Swain, their bond grew intimate, leading to a turbulent chapter of elopement, estrangement and reconciliation. However, as misunderstandings brewed, Gayatri began distancing herself by ignoring his calls and choosing her family over him. On the fateful night of August 10, filled with rage and humiliation, the accused barged into her rented home at Sreema Nagar, where a heated quarrel turned fatal. Armed with a sharp weapon, he mercilessly attacked Gayatri, killing her on the spot. He then assaulted young Neelam and presuming her to be dead, fled the spot past midnight. The next morning, suspicion by the house owner revealed the ghastly crime. Neelam was rushed to MKCG Hospital before being shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar in a critical condition. The CCTV footage became the key to tracing the culprit, leading to a dramatic arrest at Wadi Railway Station in Karnataka on August 16 with the support of RPF personnel, said Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M on Tuesday. The accused was produced before the Civil Judge & JMFC Court at Sedam, Chittapur and then brought to Odisha on transit remand, the SP said. In a shocking twist, investigators later discovered that the accused's true identity was Santanu Patra (29) of Balasore district. He was already wanted in heinous 2019 POCSO rape case involving his cousins. Living under a false name, he had absconded to Mumbai, where he met Gayatri through Facebook, setting in motion the tragic chain of events. Police have secured his remand for further investigation, even as Berhampur continues to reel under the shadow of this heart-wrenching crime where love, deception and violence fatally collided.

DGP: 750 illegal properties of anti-social elements demolished across Gujarat
DGP Vikas Sahay on Tuesday said that the Gujarat Police has prepared a list of anti-social elements in a drive held on March 15, 2025. Addressing a press conference after the 'Monthly Crime Conference' at Ektanagar in Narmada, the DGP said 750 illegal properties linked to those in the list were demolished so far. Out of the 750 illegal properties, 650 were on government land, the DGP said, adding that 2,190 illegal electricity connections had been severed. He said that the police department is carrying out result-oriented work at various stages to curb crime in the state. Special emphasis is being placed on taking strict action against usurers and ensuring that common citizens are freed from the clutches of moneylenders. 'Under this action, complaints were registered in 64 cases in July and 105 people were accused. As many as 956 accused persons have been arrested in 400 cases so far this year,' a statement from the Home Department, quoting Sahay, said. To return the valuables including the stolen goods seized from the accused in the state to their owners, the police department, in coordination with courts, has organised 761 events across the state in July under 'Tera Tujko Arpan' programme and goods worth over Rs 25 crore were returned to their owners. Goods worth over Rs 127 crore have been returned to its owners so far this year, the DGP said. Police have started a 'Cyber Center of Excellence' to curb cybercrime and strengthen action against criminals. An estimated amount of Rs 28 crore has been returned to the citizens in July in cases of fraud committed against people under cybercrime.
