Tim Merlier takes second stage win at Tour de France as Mathieu van der Poel's ‘mission impossible' falls just short

Tim Merlier takes second stage win at Tour de France as Mathieu van der Poel's ‘mission impossible' falls just short

Van der Poel had rolled off the front of the peloton alongside teammate Jonas Rickaert at the start of the 174km stage from Chinon in what looked a certain suicide mission, but the Dutchman held off the chasing pack until the final few hundred metres.
The Alpecin-Deceuninck adventure had forced rival teams to burn their lead-out men in a furious chase through crosswinds in the final 30km of the stage, and with the sprint trains thoroughly depleted the quick men had to fend for themselves at the finale.
Yesterday's stage winner Milan had good position on the barriers but Merlier went long and the European champion pipped the Italian to the line.
'It was really hard,' said Merlier, who also won stage three into Dunkirk. 'Five minutes (to Van der Poel) is a lot but we tried to chase and also the other teams start to help, the pacing was quite high at the front, but it was hard for all the guys. The bunch was nervous.
'In the end we just went all in and I'm happy I can win my second stage here.'
There has been debate in recent days about the long-term value of flat sprint stages in the Tour, with the fight for UCI points meaning fewer teams can be tempted into breakaways, but this one certainly delivered some drama.
When Van der Poel and Rickaert went early, it looked like a play purely for the intermediate sprint points, but they rolled through that line early in the day and just kept going, building a lead of more than five minutes.
Even as teams furiously fought for position in the wind behind, the lead still held at 50 seconds with 10 kilometres to go as splits appeared in the peloton.
Rickaert fell back with 6km left and it became a straight fight between the powerful but shattered Van der Poel and some disorganised lead-out trains behind.
It would go the peloton's way, but Van der Poel got at least one wish with Rickaert being named the most combative rider of the day.

'We wanted to go for it today because it's his dream to be on the podium of a Tour de France," Van der Poel said. "It's hard not to be able to finish it off but we put up a good show today.'
There was no change at the top of the general classification, with Tadej Pogacar remaining 54 seconds clear of Remco Evenepoel. Jonas Vingegaard is behind Kevin Vauquelin in fourth, one minute 17 seconds off yellow.
However, there was a blow for Pogacar as key lieutenant Joao Almeida abandoned the race as a result of injuries suffered on stage seven.
'We are really sad that we lost Joao (Almeida) today,' Pogacar said. 'I think it was just too much. I was suffering today on the bike... I cannot imagine him with all the pain, it must be really, really painful.
'It's a really big loss. Joao was in a super great shape.'

Irish Tour de France star Ben Healy loses yellow jersey after struggling in gruelling heat in latest stage

TADEJ POGACAR delivered a display of pure dominance on the first true mountain test of this year's Tour de France — as Ben Healy gave up the Yellow Jersey. Ireland's Healy, who took the maillot jaune out of a breakaway on stage 10, struggled in the heat. Once he was gapped, his deficit ballooned as he found the challenge of hanging with the general classification riders too much. Pogacar's third stage win of this Tour, the 20th of his career, put him a big step closer to what would be a fourth overall title as he leads by 3min 31sec from Vingegaard. Slovenia's Pogacar dedicated his stage win to Samuele Privitera, the 19-year-old Italian development rider who died after a crash at the Giro della Valle d'Aosta on Wednesday. Referring to the Hautacam stage in 2022, he said: 'I almost already forgot and was just looking forward to today, then all the people came to me saying all the time about this, 'Is this revenge time?' Duff Shels exit almost derailed Boyd's wedding plans

Damien Duff's abrupt departure from Shelbourne almost scuppered Seán Boyd's engagement plans but he's thankful to the legend for guiding him towards funding the wedding. Boyd hit double-figures as Shels won the league for the first time in 18 years last season but his mentor Duff sensationally quit last month just a fortnight before their Champions League campaign was to kick-off. Duff's assistant Joey O'Brien stepped up to steer the Reds through the first round against Linfield, completing a 2-1 aggregate victory over Linfield on Wednesday in Belfast. That swelled their prize-money from Uefa to €1.71m. Double that is on offer if they win one of the three ties they've secured by navigating the first hurdle of the champions path. Players and staff will receive a slice of that windfall in bonuses – typically 25% shared equally – and Boyd has joked that his new fiancé Kristin has earmarked it for their nuptials. His proposal plans were almost derailed when Duff quit on Sunday, June 22, three days before he'd booked a stayover at the plush K-Club to pop the question. 'When he left, I was like, 'That fucker, what am I supposed to do here?',' he said jokingly after the Duffer departure. 'It was a mad time so I was all over the place and it kind of distracted me a little bit. I love my partner to bits so it was the next step.' Wage levels in LOI have risen in tandem with the popularity growth but are still modest by comparison with other similar sized countries. Where players can scoop windfalls is through the bonuses accrued from progression in Europe. That seemed an avenue for Boyd when he was emerging as a teen star at Shamrock Rovers but injuries punctuated his career while many of his friends enjoyed the fruits of advancing through European competition. One of those is his teammate since last year, Seán Gannon. His substitute appearance at Windsor Park was his 58th in Europe, taking him to within five of Ronan Finn's all-time record for a League of Ireland player. He could surpass that in the six upcoming games, starting with next week's second round first leg against Qarabag at Tolka Park. Gannon was part of the Dundalk squad which qualified for the 2016 Europa League group stages as well as the Conference with Rovers two years ago. 'Ganno had been saying all week that there'll be a decent bonus from getting through a couple of European rounds,' explained Boyd. 'Some lads were able to use it as a house deposit. 'It's another incentive. I had said to her (Kristin) that potentially, if we get through rounds, we get this. And she's like, 'oh, lovely, that will pay for the wedding'. 'She's already spent everything but we've to buy a house as well. It is mad talking about those things but there's only one way in this league to maybe do that. 'Not many players get to do that, so we're delighted to win the first round.' Before their European adventure resumes, there's an occasion of a different sporting code dominating the family discussion. Boyd was at Tipperary's semi-final win over Kilkenny but snaffling tickets for this Sunday's All-Ireland decider at Croke Park is a whole other ball game. 'She's from Tipp and brought me to my first hurling match at Croke Park,' said the Dub. 'I felt like a blow-in, you know but it was brilliant. 'I don't know if I'll be able to get tickets for Sunday. I'd feel too bad. Her uncles and everything would be like mad for it, and if I was to get tickets off someone I'd know now or something, I'd have to get them away. We'll see.'

'That will do wonders for his confidence, the only thing he's lacking has been goals'

STEPHEN KENNY HAILED his side's performance after St Patrick's Athletic beat Hegelmann 2-0 in Lithuania to secure their place in the second qualifying round of the Uefa Conference League and net a minimum of €700,000. Goals in either half from Kian Leavy and Mason Melia, coupled with Aidan Keena's first-leg penalty, ensured the Dublin side secured a convincing 3-0 aggregate win. The second goal on the night was particularly well-worked by a team who had scored just once in six Premier Division matches before this tie. 'It's a brilliant finish by Kian, a good pass by Mason,' Kenny said afterwards. 'We are delighted to win home and away and keep clean sheets back to back in Europe, four clean sheets in a row [overall]. The players are defending well, and to win is a great boost because it's difficult to win home and away in Europe, no matter who you are playing.' 😍 The assist by Melia 🎯 The finish by Leavy ⚽️⚽️ The Saints double their advantage on the night & now lead 3-0 on aggregate Our 2025 Goals are sponsored by @kavanaghspubd8 #StPatsFC 🔴⚪️ — St Patrick's Athletic FC (@stpatsfc) July 17, 2025 Kenny hailed Leavy in particular. The 23-year-old midfielder missed out on a starting XI spot in the first leg, but his performance this evening suggests he will retain his place for the foreseeable future. In addition to his clinical finish to double the Saints' advantage on the night, he had a hand in the opener with a mazy run and clever pass from which Jason McClelland's low shot was poked home by an alert Melia on the rebound. Advertisement 'We hit a barren period, but overall, we are a team that, over the last year, has scored a high number of goals. We have to get back on track now because that was expensive for us, in league terms. 'But tonight is about the European game, and that was a tough game for periods, but we played and controlled it really well. Without doubt, the standout performer — the player who caught the eye most was Kian Leavy — his influence on the night and the goal rounded it off for him, his first European goal. 'I think Kian is a good striker of the ball. Sometimes he's reluctant because he's so fast running with it, he doesn't get it out of his stride to strike it. He keeps his control so close to his feet, but tonight in the second half, he had one brilliant strike from 25 yards, where he got into his stride and connected brilliantly with it, and it's just wide; he missed the top corner. 'After that, he got on the end of Mason's pass and finished really well, that will do wonders for his confidence, the only thing he's lacking has been goals, he scored against Galway earlier in the season. That goal was brilliant for him, and hopefully he'll kick on. 'It's very unusual to get players who can dribble from central areas. He was very effective tonight.' Our opener in Lithuania thanks to Mason Melia's close range finish, a first European goal for the 17-year-old after great work by Leavy & McClelland in the build-up Our 2025 Goals are sponsored by @kavanaghspubd8 #StPatsFC 🔴⚪️ — St Patrick's Athletic FC (@stpatsfc) July 17, 2025 Kenny was similarly pleased with Melia. After Keena came off the bench to score the winner in the first leg, the Dubliner might have been tempted to start the Mullingar man, but the manager's faith in the 17-year-old was ultimately rewarded. 'Every goal doesn't have to be a brilliant finish. There is nothing wrong with finishing in the six-yard box…striker's goals. We've been lacking those types of goals. Jason McClelland did brilliantly, and he was in there to finish it. 'He won't get an easier goal, but it's because he read the situation and he anticipated it, and that's a good sign. There are more goals like that for him if he continues to react like that. 'Aidan Keena has been doing well as well, pushing Mason. It's a collective effort. Aidan got the goal to give us the big win we needed, a pressure goal in Richmond Park last week, and Mason was on hand to get the goal tonight, so it's good to have both strikers contributing.' Kenny also paid tribute to Chris Forrester, after the 32-year-old came off the bench to make a club-record-breaking 25th European appearance. 'It's been a milestone week for him. His 400th appearance for the club last week, and also his 25th today in Europe. '[Former Pat's player] Ian Bermingham, of course, was in Tirana tonight for us as it happens. While he was in Tirana, his record was taken away from him by his good friend, Chris. So it's a great achievement, and hopefully, there's more for him there.' Bermingham, who is Head of Academy Football at Pat's, was in Albania to watch Partizani Tirana play Nõmme Kalju. The Estonian side won 1-0 on the night and 2-1 on aggregate after extra time to set up a second-round clash with Pat's.
