LEGENDARY horse racing trainer Peter Easterby has sadly died aged 95.
He won five Champion Hurdles and two Cheltenham Gold Cups during his glittering career.
1
His son Tim confirmed the devastating news in a touching statement.
It read: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of my father Peter Easterby.
"He passed away peacefully in his own home with his family by his side.
"A true gentleman, legendary racehorse trainer, passionate farmer, lover of country sports and an incredibly proud father and grandfather."
Tributes have flooded in, racing pundit Jim McGrath wrote: "A one off, brilliant trainer, great company, down to earth, yet fun and straightforward to deal with.
"Loved life and people. Condolences to all the family and his many friends. RIP."
Fans added: "Heartfelt condolences to you and your family Tim. One of the greatest racehorse trainers in history. A legacy that will never be forgotten."
Another said: "What a man and what a dynasty he founded. So sorry to hear of the passing of Peter Easterby - a very fine Yorkshireman indeed."
The three-time Champion Trainer started with seven horses at his Habton Grange stable in the 1950s.
He went on to become one of the most decorated in the sport and he is the only to have ever recorded over 1,000 winners in Britain in both flat and National Hunt racing.
Back-to-back Champion Hurdle winners Night Nurse and Sea Pigeon were trained by Easterby in the 70s and 80s.
Saucy Kit, Alverton and Little Owl were other horses that rode to glory for him.
His son Tim succeeded him as a trainer when he retired in 1996.

Celtic aim to 'right the wrongs' of trophyless season

Chloe Craig says Celtic need to "get the fans back on board" as they look to "right the wrongs" of last season in the new SWPL 2024-2025 season was a bitterly disappointing one for the then defending champions as they finished fourth - 15 points behind table-topping Hibs - and failed to win a domestic missed the majority of the campaign after suffering an ACL rupture last September, but the centre-back believes if Celtic "block out the noise" they can return to the heights of previous years despite some notable summer departures."It's been good to get the girls back in and try and make the wrongs right," Craig said."I think it's just about taking the pressure off ourselves. We've not got any pressure on us this season."Of course, Champions League was a big thing for us in terms of the amount of games we played. That's something we don't really have this season and can use to our advantage domestically. But for us, in previous seasons, we've won trophies, we've won the league."It's just about getting that fire back in the belly to go and redo it."I think there's been a lot of noise around the club with either fans or people not liking where it's going or what's happening, stuff like that."So for us, it's proving that we are Celtic, we are good, we're still the club that have won trophies previously."The 31-year-old felt some of last season's woes could be attributed to a lack of experience of being the hunted rather than the hunter. And with women's football developing at a sharp rate, reminding themselves no game is easy is paramount to being added: "When you compare the team now to the team we won the league with it's completely different."But people that come into the team know that they're not just playing for any club, they're playing for Celtic so they know that comes with pressure and high standards."With how the seasons have been going previously, you can't take any game lightly. Every team is good and they'll hit you with surprises in their own ways. "It's just us getting our heads down and trying to get the fans back on board."

Carabao Cup fans hit by travel chaos as COW shuts motorway leaving them desperately trying to make kick-off

BRADFORD fans were hit by travel chaos after a COW shut down the motorway. The boisterous bovine caused major issues on the M62 ahead of Tuesday night's Carabao Cup clash at Blackburn. More than 3,000 Bantams fans made the trip to Ewood Park for the first-round battle. Many hopped on the M62 for the 52-mile trip to the home of their rivals. But the Bradford faithful were left unamoosed after their travel plans were disrupted by a calamitous cow. The beast brought traffic to a standstill as it marched down the hard shoulder, forcing traffic officers into a crucial interception. A photo taken at the scene saw a marked vehicle attempting to guide the cow safely off the road. However, the creature's wellbeing came at the expense of Bradford fans, who were left pressed for time ahead of a 7.45pm kick-off. Many were left in gridlock traffic as their movements ground to a halt. THIS IS A DEVELOPING STORY..
