In a move towards smart and safer highways, Delhi's Dwarka Expressway on Wednesday got India's first AI-based traffic governance and road safety system.
Dwarka Expressway will now have the Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS), which is being recognised as a national model for AI-based traffic governance and road safety. It is aligned with the latest 2023 guidelines of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
According to an official statement from NHAI, ATMS is 56.46 km long, with 28.46 km on the Dwarka Expressway and the rest on NH-48 from Shiv Murti to Kherki Daula. This is a key national corridor turned into a next-generation digital highway, read the statement.
WHAT DOES THE ATMS DO?
The ATMS has been developed by IHMCL (Indian Highways Management Company Ltd) and implemented by NHAI. It has various components to catch violators of traffic laws, being able to detect things such as not having a seatbelt on, triple riding, and speeding, said Amrit Singha, chief product officer of IHMCL.
'Various components of the ATMS project have been covered. The salient components are traffic monitoring cameras, the second is the video incident detection and enforcement system…through all these, we are able to detect approximately 14 different types of incidents, including overspeeding, no seatbelt, and triple riding, so these are all challanable incidents as per the Motor Vehicle Act," Singha told news agency ANI.
The ATMS is integrated with the NIC e-challan portal, which shares traffic violation incidents with the police departments. The NHAI said it has five main components: Traffic Monitoring Camera System (TMCS) with 110 high-resolution PTZ cameras placed at 1-km intervals with 24/ live monitoring; Video Incident Detection and Enforcement System (VIDES); Vehicle Actuated Speed Display System (VASD); Variable Message Signboards (VMS); and a Central Control Room.
'The Command Centre acts as the digital brain of the corridor, integrating with local and national systems to enable quick deployment of emergency units during accidents, fog conditions, road obstructions, or animal intrusion. This data-driven management ensures shorter response times, fewer delays, and safer commutes," said the NHAI.

New Delhi: The FASTag ecosystem has immense potential, not just for tolling, but as a foundation for seamless digital travel experiences across the country, said Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways. According to the minister, through collaboration with fintechs and other stakeholders, 'we aim to expand the utility of FASTag into a robust platform that will enhance user convenience, streamlines transport & mobility services, and bring greater efficiency to the sector'. With 98.5 per cent toll payments, the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) FASTag programme operates across 1,728 toll plazas (1,113 National Highways, 615 State Highways). Over 38 banks have issued 11.04 crore FASTags, supporting digital payments. The government last week announced the launch of a FASTag-based annual pass priced at Rs 3,000 for cars, with effect from August 15 this year, in 'a transformative step towards hassle-free highway travel.' To explore innovative applications of the FASTag system, a workshop with Fintech companies was organised in the national capital by Indian Highways and Management Company Limited (IHMCL), a company promoted by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The objective of the workshop was to gather insights from leading fintech players on various aspects such as regulatory compliance, grievance redressal, security, and non-toll applications of FASTag to support its next phase of growth. 'The presentations and discussions held at this workshop will pave the way for a digitally empowered National Highway network that will benefit every commuter in the country,' said Gadkari. V. Umashankar, Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, said, 'Fintech has been a bright spot for India and has given us many path-breaking innovations, whereas FASTag has transformed Electronic Toll Collection in the country. 'The essence of this workshop is to look at the toll collection mechanisms and how to make it cashless, convenient, time-efficient, fraud-free, and error-free tolling in a collaborative manner. We envision fintech as provider of innovation and government will be the facilitator to create an end product that will provide a better experience to the road user,' he emphasised. According to Santosh Kumer Yadav, Chairman, NHAI, the workshop will pave way for future innovations that will help us to enhance the scope and utility of FASTag system beyond toll collections. 'This is a great opportunity to create future solutions that will cater to varied needs of the National Highway users,' he noted.

Soon FASTag may be used to buy insurance, pay challans
NEW DELHI: You may soon be able to use your vehicle's FASTag to pay traffic challans, parking fee, insurance premium and for EV charging, in addition to highway tolls. With nearly 11 crore FASTags issued by banks, the govt is exploring ways to expand its use as a flexible payment tool. To take this forward and firm up the next phase of FASTag growth, the road transport and highways ministry and the NHAI on Wednesday held a brainstorming workshop with top officials from the finance ministry and fintech firms. Road transport minister Nitin Gadkari said through collaboration with fintechs and other stakeholders, the govt aims at expanding the utility of FASTag into a robust platform that will 'enhance user convenience, streamline transport and mobility services'. Sources said road transport secretary V Umashankar said while FASTag has largely introduced manless tolling and eliminate barriers this can be used for other purposes linked to vehicles, such as paying for fuel, insurance premium and traffic challan, as the govt has enforced the 'one vehicle, one tag' rule. On the prospect of allowing insurance companies to issue FASTag to increase coverage of insured vehicles from 50% to 75%-90% in three years, the secretary said this is possible but there is a need to cleaning the 'Vahan' database, which has around 7.5 crore inactive vehicles.
