Soon FASTag may be used to buy insurance, pay challans
NEW DELHI: You may soon be able to use your vehicle's
FASTag
to pay traffic challans, parking fee, insurance premium and for EV charging, in addition to highway tolls. With nearly 11 crore FASTags issued by banks, the govt is exploring ways to expand its use as a flexible payment tool.
To take this forward and firm up the next phase of FASTag growth, the road transport and highways ministry and the NHAI on Wednesday held a brainstorming workshop with top officials from the finance ministry and fintech firms. Road transport minister Nitin Gadkari said through collaboration with fintechs and other stakeholders, the govt aims at expanding the utility of FASTag into a robust platform that will 'enhance user convenience, streamline transport and mobility services'.
Sources said road transport secretary V Umashankar said while FASTag has largely introduced manless tolling and eliminate barriers this can be used for other purposes linked to vehicles, such as paying for fuel, insurance premium and traffic challan, as the govt has enforced the 'one vehicle, one tag' rule.
On the prospect of allowing insurance companies to issue FASTag to increase coverage of insured vehicles from 50% to 75%-90% in three years, the secretary said this is possible but there is a need to cleaning the 'Vahan' database, which has around 7.5 crore inactive vehicles.

Sebi fines BSE Rs 25 lakh over early access to information
MUMBAI: Markets regulator Sebi has fined BSE Rs 25 lakh for several erroneous business practices including sharing company announcements with its paid clients ahead of the same being published on its website. The BSE was also fined for allowing client code modifications for trades between two unrelated institutional clients without any due diligence. The order used strong words, terming its acts as "omissions, laxity and negligence with a certain amount of lethargic approach" that should not be "exonerated" since such acts were carried out by a "first level of regulator", that is the exchange. "At stake was the sanctity of exclusive regulatory duty of BSE. Such duty, if allowed to be violated with impunity, will be a serious setback to the image of BSE and Sebi. Sensex rallies to over 8-month high on Iran-Israel ceasefire
MUMBAI: Stronger indications of an Israel-Iran ceasefire lifted investor sentiment on Dalal Street Wednesday, pushing sensex to over its eight-month high mark. Easing crude oil prices and short covering by speculators who were cutting their losses also helped the rally in the late session, market players said. At close, sensex was at 82,756 points, up 700 points or 0.9% while nifty on NSE was at 25,245 points, up 200 points or 0.8%. Both indices are at over eight-month high levels. Vinod Nair, head of research, Geojit Investments, said the rally was supported by easing geopolitical tensions in West Asia and cooling crude prices. "While (foreign funds) continue to withdraw capital, positive global cues are helping sustain market momentum. Domestically, a good monsoon forecast and moderating inflation are further underpinning the optimism." Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays . Buying by domestic funds drives D-Street rally
The day's rally in the market came on the back of strong buying by domestic funds, while foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) continued to be the net sellers. End-of-the-day data on BSE showed that while domestic institutions were net buyers at Rs 2,373 crore, FPIs were net sellers at Rs 2,428 crore. The rally added nearly Rs 4 lakh crore to the investors' wealth with BSE's market capitalisation now at Rs 454 lakh crore, official data showed. The domestic market also got a boost from the overnight rally on Wall Street that saw the Dow Jones index up about 1.2% while Nasdaq Composite was up 1.4%. The buoyancy on Dalal Street was across sectors with 27 of the 30 sensex stocks closing higher. Among the index's constituents, HDFC Bank , Infosys and Reliance Industries contributed the most to the index's rally. In the broader market, there were 2,779 gainers to 1,262 losers, BSE data showed. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays .
