McLaren's Rise Faster Than Ferrari's Schumacher Era: Andrea Stella's Bold Claim
McLaren leads the constructors' championship by 268 points, while both their drivers, Piastri and Norris, are vying for the drivers' title.
McLaren's recent transformation has been so rapid and effective that its current trajectory may even outpace the legendary Ferrari era under Michael Schumacher, according to team principal Andrea Stella.
Speaking on Friday ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Stella reflected on his past with Ferrari and expressed astonishment at the scale and speed of McLaren's resurgence.
The Italian, who served as an engineer at Ferrari during Schumacher's dominance in the early 2000s, now leads a McLaren team that is dominating both the drivers' and constructors' championships in 2025.
Stella, who joined McLaren in 2015 after more than a decade at Ferrari, emphasized that drawing direct comparisons between eras and teams can be tricky, particularly given his different roles in each organization.
However, he admitted that McLaren's current rate of development stands out.
'It's always difficult to compare across seasons," Stella said. 'In this case, we are comparing across teams, and even myself, I was in a very different role, so my field of view, my perspective was very different."
During Schumacher's golden run from 2000 to 2004, Ferrari secured five consecutive drivers' titles and six consecutive constructors' championships, with the 2004 season being especially dominant—15 wins from 18 races.
McLaren's Dominance in 2025
In stark contrast to their recent struggles, McLaren has surged to the front of the grid in 2025. After finishing fifth in 2022 and fourth in 2023, the team has won 10 of the first 13 races this season and holds a commanding 268-point lead over second-placed Ferrari in the constructors' standings.
Their driver duo—Oscar Piastri of Australia and Britain's Lando Norris—are currently locked in a close fight for the drivers' title. Piastri leads Norris by 16 points, while Max Verstappen, the reigning champion and Red Bull ace, trails by a distant 81 points in third place.
Despite the commanding lead and consistent performance from his drivers, Stella is unwilling to label the championship battle as a closed contest.
'Definitely not," Stella said when asked about whether Verstappen was out of the Championship race.
'I only agree with mathematics. So once mathematics tells us that's the case, then I'll change my answer."

IND vs ENG 5th Test Day 3: Jaiswal Hundred Puts India On Top, Lead By 281 Runs At Tea
Last Updated: Yashasvi Jaiswal's sixth century helped India lead by 281 runs by tea on day three of the final Test. India reached 304/6, with England dropping six catches. Yashasvi Jaiswal capitalized on his fortune to score his sixth century in tough conditions, helping India extend their lead to 281 runs by tea on the third day of the fifth and final Test on Saturday. India lost three wickets in the session but managed to reach 304 for six at the break. England continued to drop catches, bringing their total to six for this innings. Jaiswal (118 off 164), who was dropped twice on Friday, received another life on day three and made the most of it, scoring his second century of the series. Shubman Gill (11 off 9) hit two elegant boundaries before falling to Gus Atkinson's delivery, the first ball after lunch. Gill ended the series with a remarkable 754 runs, just 20 short of Sunil Gavaskar's all-time record for an Indian. Jaiswal, who frequently used the cut shot, was eventually caught in the third-man region. Karun Nair was caught behind off Atkinson, undone by extra bounce in the uncertain corridor. The highest successful chase at The Oval is 263, and India has ensured that England will need to set a new record in the fourth innings. Earlier, nightwatchman Akash Deep scored his maiden half-century, frustrating a lacklustre England and putting India in a strong position by lunch. Starting the day at 75 for two, India reached 189 for three at the break with Yashasvi Jaiswal (85 not out off 106 balls) and Akash Deep (66 off 94 balls) sharing a 107-run partnership off 150 balls. The Indian pacer, who was on four overnight, was eventually dismissed by Jamie Overton with a short ball that he couldn't control, giving an easy catch to Gus Atkinson at point. A bowler short, England struggled to contain Akash Deep, who slashed his bat frequently and got away with it. Zak Crawley dropped a regulation catch of Akash Deep at third slip off Josh Tongue, adding to England's 19 dropped catches across 10 Indian innings. The pitch also played better than the first two days, with less seam movement. There were plenty of edges to the third-man region, but they did not result in wickets. Akash Deep, who had only one first-class fifty before this game, signalled his intentions in the first over bowled by left-arm spinner Jacob Bethell, hitting a boundary over mid-wicket. Akash Deep didn't hold back against the fast bowlers either, especially Atkinson. He reached his fifty with another slog off Atkinson and was understandably thrilled, receiving applause from the Indian dressing room. Jaiswal, at the other end, let Akash Deep play his shots but did manage a ramp shot off Overton that went for a boundary. Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Last Updated: Three batters—KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Ravindra Jadeja—have scored more than 500 runs for India in the ongoing series against England. Ravindra Jadeja has impressed with his batting performances for India in the ongoing five-match Test series against England. In five matches, he has scored more than 500 runs for the Shubman Gill-led side. This is the first time in his career that Jadeja has scored 500 runs in a Test series for the Indian team. Jadeja needed 37 runs in the second innings of the ongoing fifth India-England Test at the Oval to complete 500 runs in the 2025 edition of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, and he achieved the objective during the third session of the third day's play. Team India played its first-ever Test match in June 1932 against England at Lord's, but their first-ever Test series was played in 1933-34 at home against the English team. In that series (3-match assignment), Lala Amarnath finished as the top run getter for India. In six innings of three matches, he amassed a total of 203 runs. A total of five Indian batters have scored more than 400 runs in the ongoing series. During the 1989 edition of the Ashes series played in England, five batters—Mark Taylor (834), Dean Jones (566), Steve Waugh (506), Allan Border (442), and David Boon (442)—scored more than 400 runs for the Baggy Greens. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Charles Leclerc (Image credit: Instagram) New faces have been joining the top 10 for the past few races, and during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix, it was Fernando Alonso and his Aston Martin teammate Lance Stroll dominating in the top five. At one point in Q2, the two even held the top two positions. Eventually, it was Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc who claimed his first pole of the season. He will be joined by McLaren driver Oscar Piastri on the front row, with Lando Norris behind them in third position on the grid. Hungarian Grand Prix Qualifying highlights Ferrari's Charles Leclerc has claimed five podiums so far and may be eyeing his first win of the season, as he will be starting Sunday's race from pole position. However, giving him close competition will be the usual duo — Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, both of whom finished on the podium last year. Speaking after his first pole of the year, Leclerc said, 'The whole qualifying was extremely difficult. It was difficult to get to Q2 and difficult to get to Q3. Then the conditions changed, I knew I had to do a clean lap to target third, and I can't believe it. Honestly, I have no words. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo It is probably one of the best pole positions I have had, as it is so unexpected.' Piastri added, 'The wind changed a lot, it sounds so pathetic blaming the wind but it switched around. It was difficult to judge in those conditions, maybe not the best execution. I was surprised we couldn't go quicker than that. Charles has been quick all weekend, and even this morning he was closer than expected. I wasn't expecting to be second to a Ferrari this weekend, but he's done a good job.' In fourth will be Mercedes driver George Russell. Two new faces in the top 10 are the Aston Martin drivers — Fernando Alonso in fifth and Lance Stroll in sixth. Kick Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto also put up a fantastic drive and finished seventh. In eighth position is Red Bull's Max Verstappen. He will be joined by his former teammate and current Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson. Another Racing Bulls driver, Isack Hadjar, took tenth position in Saturday's qualifying.
