Ringgit holds steady as US eases Malaysia tariffs, other majors slip

Malay Mail6 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 — The ringgit opened flat against the US dollar but rose against other major currencies, with investors still weighing the outcome of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting and Washington's reciprocal tariff measures, which take effect today.
At 8am, the local note stood at 4.2650/2850 against the US dollar, almost unchanged from Thursday's close of 4.2650/2730.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid told Bernama that the newly announced tariff will likely support the ringgit and lift investor sentiment.
Earlier, the United States announced a reduced tariff of 19 per cent on Malaysian imports, effective August 1, 2025.
On July 7, US President Donald Trump said Washington would impose a 25 per cent tariff on all Malaysian products entering the country, separate from existing sectoral tariffs. The new rate, effective today, is one percentage point higher than the 24 per cent announced in April.
Mohd Afzanizam noted that the US Dollar Index (DXY) continued to rise, gaining 0.15 per cent to reach 99.968 points, supported by the tariff decision and a stronger-than-expected Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, which climbed to 2.6 per cent in June.
He said the data suggested inflationary risks remained and could prompt the Federal Reserve (Fed) to keep the Fed Funds Rate unchanged at its September meeting.
'Against such a backdrop, the ringgit is expected to stay soft, possibly around RM4.26. Yesterday, the ringgit weakened by 0.61 per cent to close at RM4.2690.
'It appears that, following the FOMC meeting, the US dollar gained traction as the Fed remains committed to its restrictive policy stance to contain inflation risks,' he added.
At the opening, the ringgit was higher against other major currencies.
It strengthened against the Japanese yen to 2.8277/8411 from 2.8443/8498 on Thursday, rose against the British pound to 5.6328/6592 from 5.6426/6532, and gained against the euro to 4.8711/8939 from 4.8766/8857.
The ringgit was mixed against regional peers.
It was little changed against the Philippine peso at 7.31/7.35 from 7.31/7.33 and flat against the Indonesian rupiah at 259.1/260.5 from 259.1/259.7.
The local note rose against the Thai baht to 13.0169/0876 from 13.0448/0753 and strengthened versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2856/3012 from 3.2889/2953. — Bernama

Ringgit opens firmer on softer US$, rate cut hopes

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened firmer against the US dollar on Thursday, lifted by a softer greenback amid growing expectations of interest rate cuts by the United States Federal Reserve (Fed) in the coming months. At 8 am, the local note climbed to 4.2185/2260 against the greenback from Wednesday's close of 4.2235/2305. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said recent comments by Fed officials signalled that policy adjustments may be needed to address labour market weakness, reinforcing hopes of a rate cut at the next Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting. He noted that the upcoming FOMC meeting, scheduled for September 16-17, is expected to see the Fed Funds Rate lowered by 25 basis points. "This would likely be ringgit-positive, as a Fed rate cut would narrow the interest rate differential with the Overnight Policy Rate (OPR). "In light of current market conditions, the ringgit is expected to trade between 4.21 and 4.22 against the US dollar today,' he told Bernama. Meanwhile, the ringgit was mostly lower against a basket of major and regional currencies in early trade. It slipped against the Japanese yen to 2.8654/8707 from 2.8570/8619 on Wednesday, weakened versus the British pound to 5.6342/6442 from 5.6160/6253, and declined against the euro to 4.9192/9279 from 4.8929/9010. The local unit also fell against the Singapore dollar to 3.2824/2885 from 3.2806/2863 and depreciated vis-à-vis the Thai baht to 13.0402/0715 from 13.0291/0567. Conversely, the ringgit strengthened against the Philippine peso to 7.33/7.35 from 7.34/7.36 and firmed versus the Indonesian rupiah to 257.8/258.4 from 258.1/258.6. - Bernama

Cautious start for Bursa amid Wall Street gains, tariff tensions

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — Bursa Malaysia edged slightly higher on Thursday after a weak start, as investors took a cautious cue from Wall Street's overnight gains ahead of a closely watched tariff announcement by US President Donald Trump. At 9.10 am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) rose 0.06 of a point to 1,541.54 from Wednesday's close of 1,541.48. The benchmark index had earlier opened 0.98 of a point lower at 1,540.50. Turnover stood at 139 million shares worth RM68.11 million. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd vice-president of equity research Thong Pak Leng said the stronger overnight performance on Wall Street was buoyed by an additional US$100 billion investment by Apple Inc, bringing its total planned spending to US$600 billion over the next few years. 'However, investors remain cautious on the latest report that Trump may impose a 100 per cent tariff on imported semiconductors. 'Additionally, trading has been lacklustre due to the absence of fresh catalysts. Therefore, we expect the local bourse to mirror this trend and anticipate the index to hover within the 1,535–1,545 range today,' he told Bernama.
