Damaged CC road poses danger to public; HDMC urged to act
Hubballi: The cement concrete (CC) road connecting Hubballi-Karwar Road to Indira Gandhi Glass House and MG Park has fallen into disrepair, posing serious risks to both motorists and pedestrians.
With pavers washed away and many manholes left open, residents and commuters demand immediate action by the authorities.
Located under ward No. 50 of the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC), the road passes MG Park, RN Shetty Kalyan Mantapa, and Girani Chal, an area home to around 200 families. Due to ongoing flyover work, the vehicles heading to Hosur, Unkal, and Navanagar have been rerouted through this stretch, significantly increasing the flow of vehicles, including BRTS Chigari buses, NWKRTC buses and private vehicles.
The visitors to MG Park are finding it increasingly difficult to navigate the area. With 3-4 open manholes and a large portion of paver blocks either damaged or missing, pedestrians, especially senior citizens and children, are at risk.
Suresh Koti, a resident of Girani Chal, urged the authorities to reinstall the pavers soon to ensure the safety of all.
"During rainfall, the situation becomes worse due to waterlogging," he said.
Another commuter, Rakesh Kumar, also urged the authorities to repair the road soon. "Half the road is in poor condition. Driving here is risky," he said.
Mangalamma Hiremani, corporator from ward No. 50, said the CC road was constructed in 2020 under the Smart City project. "Due to a lack of coordination between HDMC and Smart City, the repair work has not been carried out. Due to this, both motorists and pedestrians are suffering. I had raised the issue with HDMC multiple times, but in vain," she said.
Basavaraj Jiddi, HDMC (Zonal-9) assistant commissioner, said the project's maintenance period by the Smart City has ended. "Therefore, the maintenance of the road now lies with HDMC. Repair works will be taken up soon," he said.

Surge in complaints on stray dog menace dismays Hubballi-Dharwad residents
Pic: Of late, twin cities have seen a significant surge in complaints about stray dogs, with the HDMC control room overwhelmed by calls from residents Hubballi: In recent months, the twin cities have seen a significant surge in complaints about stray dogs, with the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) control room overwhelmed by calls from concerned residents. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The escalating issue has raised widespread community concerns, as stray dogs pose potential risks to public safety and hygiene. The increase in complaints about stray dogs is attributed to several factors, including inadequate implementation of animal birth control programmes, insufficient shelters, and a lack of public awareness campaigns. The absence of a comprehensive strategy to address the problem has escalated the situation, leaving residents feeling vulnerable and neglected. Corporator Najeer Honyal said people are frustrated over the apparent inaction of the HDMC, even after complaining to the control room. The lack of effective measures to control the stray dog population has led to an increase in incidents, including dog bites and disturbances in residential areas, parks, and marketplaces. Sources in HDMC report that complaints to the control room have been increasing over the past six months. From Feb to date, the control room has received over 1,800 complaints, with more than 500 complaints registered in July alone regarding the stray dog menace. This surge has heightened public fears and raised questions about the efficiency and responsiveness of the municipal authorities. Dr Pandurang Patil, former mayor, said to address this growing concern, the HDMC must take immediate and decisive action. This includes strengthening animal birth control (ABC) initiatives and conducting regular awareness drives to educate the public on the importance of sterilisation and proper garbage disposal. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Furthermore, the HDMC must ensure that its response mechanisms are robust and efficient, with a dedicated team to address complaints and implement solutions promptly. By adopting a proactive and holistic approach, the municipal authorities can not only alleviate the current crisis but also prevent future occurrences, ensuring a safer and more harmonious environment for all residents of the twin cities. Increasing complaints about stray dogs in twin cities highlight the urgent need for the HDMC to prioritise and address this issue. Through concerted efforts and community engagement, it is possible to find sustainable solutions that protect both the residents and the stray animals. HDMC commissioner Rudresh Ghali stated that a drive was conducted on Gokul Road with the assistance of the police department, resulting in the capture of a large number of stray dogs. The HDMC has also initiated the establishment of a sterilisation centre in Shivalli Village to implement ABC programmes, targeting the sterilisation of at least 200 dogs daily. HDMC is focusing on increasing dog sterilisations, he added.
