The deceased was identified as Harjeet Singh, a resident of Sundran village in Dera Bassi. His bullet-ridden and blood-stained body was found inside a locked Honda Amaze car, which belonged to the SDJM, police said.
Confirming the incident, Dera Bassi deputy superintendent of Police (DSP) Bikramjit Singh Brar said that the police were alerted after the judge informed them that his PSO had gone to drop his daughter off but failed to return and his phone had been switched off.
"Following the call, the SHO of Dera Bassi police station launched a search. Later, a constable from Chandigarh Police who lives near the area noticed the vehicle with the officer's body inside and informed the local police," said DSP Brar.
Upon reaching the scene, police found the car engine running and the vehicle locked from inside. 'We had to break the window to open the door. The head constable had shot himself in the middle of his forehead.
His service revolver was recovered from inside the vehicle,' the DSP added.
No suicide note was found from the spot. The motive behind the alleged suicide remains unknown.
DSP Brar said that preliminary inquiry revealed that Harjeet Singh was a well-mannered and soft-spoken individual. 'He had worked as a PSO to several judges in the past and had never shown signs of stress or depression,' he said.
The deceased's mobile phone has been seized for forensic examination, and his family has been informed. The police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC, and further investigations are underway.

Migrant exodus sparks political storm in Gurugram

A police verification drive targeting undocumented immigrants in Gurugram has led to the departure of hundreds of Bengali-speaking migrant families and triggered a political controversy, with opposition leaders accusing the Haryana government of communal bias. A migrant worker settlement in South City 2, in Gurugram Sector 47 near Park Hospital, on Friday. (Parveen Kumar/HT Photo) The drive, aimed at identifying undocumented immigrants, has reportedly led to 300–400 families leaving shanty settlements, particularly around South City 2, amid fears of detention and harassment. 'Even those with Aadhaar and voter cards are being detained. Police arrive without warning and take people away. Some were even beaten,' a migrant resident claimed, requesting not to be named. 'We didn't come here to break the law—we came to work hard and feed our families,' said Imran Ali, a 32-year-old construction worker from Murshidabad, who left Gurugram last week and is now staying with a cousin in Delhi's Seelampur. 'Police came to our settlement late at night. Even though I showed my Aadhaar card, they said it needed to be verified in Bengal. My wife got scared, packed our things, and we left that same night. I lost my job, and we are now surviving on whatever little savings I had. I don't know when we will go back—or if we even can.' Congress MLA Aftab Ahmed, a senior Meo community leader, alleged the drive is 'unfairly singling out Muslim residents' and 'damaging Gurugram's secular fabric and global image.' He said even individuals with valid documents have been detained and forced to leave. 'This campaign… has turned into a tool for communal victimisation,' Ahmed said, adding he has raised the issue with the state DGP and Gurugram Commissioner of Police, who assured him 'no legitimate Indian citizen will be harassed.' Chief minister Nayab Singh Saini defended the campaign, declaring, 'There is no place for Bangladeshi infiltrators in Haryana; they are being removed as swiftly as possible.' He added, 'No compromise against India's unity, sovereignty, and Constitution is acceptable... the nation's interest will always be paramount.' In response, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee slammed the drive, calling it 'linguistic terror' and alleging that Bengali-speaking workers are being deported without proper checks. 'I have been increasingly receiving reports of detentions and atrocities… West Bengal Police is receiving requests from Haryana Police for identity verification,' she said, citing Human Rights Watch (HRW) reports accusing BJP-ruled states of systematic deportations. HRW reports that this has been happening systematically in the BJP-ruled States of Assam, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and Delhi, following a directive by the Ministry of Home, Government of India. Shame!! Now, even international human rights organisations have started taking note of the linguistic terrorism unleashed in India. This must stop at once!!' the CM has been attacking the BJP-led Centre, saying that the detention of hundreds of Bengali speaking migrant workers across BJP-governed states was 'a language war and linguistic terrorism' waged on Bengal and its people. TMC MP Samirul Islam backed Banerjee, accusing BJP-led states of 'hiding data on Bengali-speaking migrants' and turning 'national security into a tool of discrimination.' 'No illegal immigrant will be allowed to stay in Haryana. The verification drive is being conducted strictly within the legal framework to ensure the safety and security of all citizens,' said Arvind Saini, media in-charge of BJP Haryana. 'The Congress is raising baseless concerns because their traditional vote bank is being affected. This is not about religion or language—it's about national interest and lawful residency.' Senior Congress leader Pankaj Dawar said many of these families have been in Gurugram for over two decades as domestic workers and labourers. 'They consider Gurugram their home. But now, their lives have been thrown into chaos,' he said. Haryana Police, however, denied any communal angle. 'The process is based on intelligence inputs and legal procedure,' said Gurugram police spokesperson Sandeep Kumar. 'We are ensuring that no Indian citizen is harassed.' As the controversy deepens, the verification campaign has become a flashpoint in the larger political discourse around migration, minority rights, and state power, according to opposing political leaders. 'The situation is not just a local law enforcement issue anymore,' Ahmed said. 'It's a test of how inclusive and just we remain as a society.'

Another arrest in Punjab RPG attack puts Armenia-based syndicate in focus

1 2 Chandigarh: The special cell of Delhi Police has made another arrest in connection with the April 7 RPG attack at Qila Lal Singh police station in Punjab's Batala, nabbing 22-year-old Karanbir alias Karan from Gurdaspur in an Arms Act case registered at the special cell police station. An officer said he had confessed to his involvement in the rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) attack, which traces its roots to masterminds and handlers in the US, Greece, and Armenia. Karan, according to the special cell of Delhi Police, has allegiance with the banned terror group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI). His arrest came four days after another accused and alleged BKI operative, Akashdeep Singh alias Baaz (22), was arrested by the special cell from Indore on April 22. Both are residents of Chananke village in Amritsar district. Karan is the brother of Gursewak, who was among those already arrested by Punjab Police, an officer privy to the case details revealed. The Delhi Police officer said Karan spent three months in Armenia in 2024. He is accused of providing shelter to the perpetrators of the Qila Lal Singh police station attack and receiving funds sent by the handlers for the attack. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Resmed AirSense 11 with flat 20% off ResMed Buy Now Undo The officer also said two-three shooters of this syndicate have fled to Armenia, where one of the key components of this syndicate is based. The officer said Karan was also involved in other criminal activities carried out by the syndicate. Delhi additional commissioner of police Pramod Singh Kushwah said over the phone that after the arrest of Akashdeep from Indore, they learnt about Karanbir's involvement in the Qila Lal Singh police station attack case. "He was arrested in Gurdaspur on Sunday. He was part of the conspiracy and played a key role in the grenade attack," Kushwah said. The RPG attack case was initially probed by Punjab Police before it was handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) earlier this month. The special cell of Delhi Police had also started working on the BKI module allegedly involved in the attack after United States-based Happy Passia (arrested by the FBI in the US on April 17), Manu Agwan (who police believe is in Greece), and Gopi Nawanshahria (who police suspect to be in North America) claimed responsibility and threatened to carry out an attack in Delhi as well. Armenia-based Shera on radar Among others, Punjab Police have named Armenia-based Shamsher Singh aka Shera aka Honey as an accused in the Qila Lal Singh police station attack. According to Punjab Police, the associates of Shera were responsible for the retrieval and disposal of the RPG under his directions in the attack. Batala senior superintendent of police Suhail Qasim Mir said before giving the case to NIA, Punjab Police arrested a dozen accused, and Gursewak was one of them. "Armenia-based Shamsher Singh Shera is one of the accused," he said. Closely linked to now-arrested Happy Passia and Pakistani-based BKI terrorist Harwinder Singh Rinda, Shera, as per a police dossier, is described as a foreign-based active node of the Rinda-Passia terror network. The dossier reads, "He plays a key role in supporting the terror network by providing manpower, logistics, and financial aid for their nefarious activities." Shera is wanted by Punjab Police in FIRs linked to terrorism, organised crime, and anti-national acts, reads the dossier. Shera, a native of village Mann in Gurdaspur district, according to the police dossier, facilitated the targeted killing of Hardeep Singh, a resident of Jouria Kalan, Batala. He also tasked his local associates, Kuldeep Singh and Avtar Singh of Jalandhar, with carrying out target killings in the Ludhiana area. MSID:: 122936213 413 |
