Sukhbir Badal writes to PM, seeks intervention in Punjab-Haryana water dispute
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Sunday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his intervention in the ongoing water dispute between Punjab and Haryana. In his letter, he strongly opposed Haryana's demand for an increased share of Nangal dam and said that the issue of Punjab's river waters is not a dispute but a case of 'brazen loot against the people of the patriotic border state'.advertisementBadal urged the Prime Minister's immediate intervention to rectify what he called "longstanding injustices" meted out to Punjab.
The SAD chief 'cautioned the country that not removing the reasons for the alienation of Punjabis can push us back towards the conditions that afflicted us all for over two decades.""Justice is the best guarantee for peace and communal harmony in the country," the letter said.Badal further appealed for the resolution of Punjab's 'just grievances' and termed it a national priority to prevent the recurrence of past turmoil. 'Punjabis demand no favours: they seek only justice,' he wrote, urging that the same principles used in interstate disputes across India be applied in Punjab's case.Taking aim at the AAP leader and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Badal criticised him and his party for their statements about irrigating every field in Haryana and Rajasthan with Punjab's waters. He said such promises weaken Punjab's legitimate claim that it does not have a single drop of water to spare.advertisement'The Chief Minister is playing with fire with his duplicity, not realising the gravity of the issue. He must put an end to this double speak,' said the Akali leader.Reaffirming his party's stance, Badal further said that the Shiromani Akali Dal will not remain "a mute witness to any discrimination against Punjab on this or any other issue."'We will exercise our democratic right to peacefully ensure that no injustice is done to the state,' he said.He further alleged that Rajasthan and Haryana have always been 'illegal beneficiaries' of Punjab's river waters - state's sole natural resource, violating the Riparian principle, which he described as the standard for river water allocation nationally and internationally. 'Neither Haryana nor Rajasthan is a Riparian state,' he claimed. The SAD chief went on to criticise the Supreme Court's directive to construct the Satluj Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal without assessing the water availability in the rivers. 'This would have been the first canal in the world to be constructed even without knowing if there is any water available to flow through it,' he said, recalling that former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal refused to implement the order and instead returned the acquired land to its original owner farmers.Addressing the current controversy over the release of water to Haryana, Badal said the neighbouring state had already consumed more than its allocated share. 'Instead of being grateful to Punjab, it brazenly demands even more water,' he said.Must Watch

Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri accuses AAP of isolating Punjab from national development
Union minister of petroleum and natural gas Hardeep Singh Puri on Thursday accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab of isolating the state from national development by failing to implement key central schemes. Puri, who was in Ludhiana to campaign for Bharatiya Janata Party's Ludhiana West bypoll candidate Jiwan Gupta, cited Ayushman Bharat scheme as a 'glaring example of how people of Punjab were being denied basic benefits available in other states'. 'States that cooperate with the Centre's policies are witnessing robust development. Sadly, Punjab is not among them,' he said. Puri also raised concerns on Punjab's law and order situation, and termed the Bhagwant Mann government's war on drugs as a 'hoax'. Speaking about India's economic journey under the Modi government, Puri said, 'In 2014, India was the 10th largest economy at 2 trillion dollars. Today, with a 4.3 trillion dollar economy, India has surpassed the UK and Japan to become the fourth largest economy in the world. We are poised to overtake Germany by next year and become the third largest economy by 2026.' Citing World Bank projections, he said that with a growth rate of 6.5%, India stands out among global economies, significantly ahead of nations like the UK, Germany, and Japan, each of which is growing at just around 2%. 'The world is watching India with great interest. But Punjab's isolation from this national growth trajectory is unfortunate,' Puri remarked. Cheema hits back Meanwhile, Punjab finance minister Harpal Cheema hit back, stating that the BJP government had plunged India into a debt spiral. He said that when the BJP assumed power in 2014, the nation's debt stood at approximately ₹55 lakh crore, which has since ballooned to ₹215 lakh crore. On Puri's allegations about Punjab not implementing the Ayushman Bharat scheme, he said the central scheme is riddled with many problems that prevent many from receiving its benefits. On the contrary, Cheema said, AAP's Mohalla Clinics had provided treatment to millions of poor families without any restriction. He also questioned Puri about the BJP's 'unfulfilled promises' of depositing ₹15 lakh into the account of every Indian citizen and creating two crore jobs annually, among others.

Ludhiana: Dalits deserve dignity, not deception, says Channi
Former Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi targeted Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for not attending the government-organised Kabir Jayanti celebrations in Jalandhar on Wednesday, even though they were reportedly just a few kilometers away. Channi was here in Ludhiana for campaigning in favour of the party's Ludhiana West byelection candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu. While addressing a press conference in Ludhiana on Thursday, Channi said Kejriwal and Mann had committed to participate in the Kabir Jayanti function, but instead spent their time at a private factory,' Channi alleged. 'Their absence is not coincidental — it reflects their deep-seated disregard for Dalit icons and sentiments.' Channi stated that the Kabir Bhawan in Jalandhar — constructed during the Congress regime at a cost of ₹12 crore — has been neglected by the AAP government. He also pointed out that despite machinery being provided by the previous government for cleaning the sarovar at Bhagwan Valmiki Teerth in Amritsar, the current administration did nothing to maintain it. Further, Channi slammed the AAP government for scrapping the ₹100 crore Baba Saheb Research Centre project proposed at Kapurthala Technical University during his tenure as CM. 'Not even a single brick has been laid in the past three years,' he said, terming it a betrayal of Baba Saheb's legacy. Channi also brought up the issue of a ₹25 crore grant that the Congress government had sanctioned for setting up a study centre on Guru Ravidas Ji's teachings at Dera Sachkhand Ballan. He alleged that the AAP government withdrew the cheque, and only revisited the Dera on the eve of the Lok Sabha elections, reissuing the same cheque — which, he claimed, has still not been encashed due to non-release of funds. Channi also attacked AAP's pre-poll promise of ₹1,000 per month to every woman, alleging that not a single rupee has been disbursed even after over 40 months in power. 'Girls in Punjab now ask their mothers every day, 'When will 'Kejriwal uncle' from Delhi deposit money into our accounts?'' he said.

Ludhiana: Only a regional party can solve Punjab's issues, says Sukhbir
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Thursday appealed to the people of Ludhiana West assembly constituency to strengthen the regional party to pave the way for overall development as well as peace and communal harmony in Punjab. Campaigning for party candidate Parupkar Singh Ghumman in the Ludhiana West assembly constituency, Sukhbir Badal said 'Only a regional party can fulfil the aspirations of Punjabis and resolve pending issues besides providing people centric governance. Parties from Delhi only seek to exploit Punjab.' Taking aim at the present Aam Aadmi Party government as well as the previous Congress one, Sukhbir said, 'These governments have acted like the erstwhile East India Company. They have both looted Punjab to fill the coffers of their Delhi leadership.' He added, 'The law and order situation is such that businessmen are opting to invest in other states now. Extortions and targeted killings have become the norm.' Asking the people to compare this with SAD rule, Sukhbir Badal said 'Our guiding philosophy is 'Sarbat Da Bhala'. We value and respect each community.' Sukhbir Badal also spoke on how the SAD had a proven track record of undertaking record development. 'See you around. All development projects be it thermal plants, airports or expressways - they have all come up during SAD governments.' Compare progress before casting vote: Majithia Senior SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia on Thursday appealed to the electorate of Ludhiana West assembly constituency to measure the performance of the AAP-led state government with the erstwhile SAD government while casting their votes for the Ludhiana West byelection. Majithia said 'Please see all development work around you. All development work in Ludhiana city including the elevated road, Southern Bypass, sewerage works and modern policing infrastructure including CCTV coverage of the entire city has been achieved by the erstwhile SAD government. Neither the Congress or the AAP governments have a single project to their credit. There is no reason to vote for either of these parties who have only exploited you whereas the SAD has always worked for your welfare.' Asserting that the AAP government could not ask for more time to deliver results, Majithia said 'It is already three and a half years since the government took over the reins of power. If they have failed to deliver anything till now they cannot be expected to do anything in the next one and a half years'. Stating that Punjab was suffering due to the complete surrender to Delhi by chief minister Bhagwant Mann, the SAD leader said 'Ludhiana has also suffered due to this. Industry is most affected with no new investment coming into the State even as home grown industrialists are shifting to other States due to the culture of extortions and targeted killings.'
