Sukhbir Badal writes to PM, seeks intervention in Punjab-Haryana water dispute
The SAD chief 'cautioned the country that not removing the reasons for the alienation of Punjabis can push us back towards the conditions that afflicted us all for over two decades.""Justice is the best guarantee for peace and communal harmony in the country," the letter said.Badal further appealed for the resolution of Punjab's 'just grievances' and termed it a national priority to prevent the recurrence of past turmoil. 'Punjabis demand no favours: they seek only justice,' he wrote, urging that the same principles used in interstate disputes across India be applied in Punjab's case.Taking aim at the AAP leader and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Badal criticised him and his party for their statements about irrigating every field in Haryana and Rajasthan with Punjab's waters. He said such promises weaken Punjab's legitimate claim that it does not have a single drop of water to spare.advertisement'The Chief Minister is playing with fire with his duplicity, not realising the gravity of the issue. He must put an end to this double speak,' said the Akali leader.Reaffirming his party's stance, Badal further said that the Shiromani Akali Dal will not remain "a mute witness to any discrimination against Punjab on this or any other issue."'We will exercise our democratic right to peacefully ensure that no injustice is done to the state,' he said.He further alleged that Rajasthan and Haryana have always been 'illegal beneficiaries' of Punjab's river waters - state's sole natural resource, violating the Riparian principle, which he described as the standard for river water allocation nationally and internationally. 'Neither Haryana nor Rajasthan is a Riparian state,' he claimed. The SAD chief went on to criticise the Supreme Court's directive to construct the Satluj Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal without assessing the water availability in the rivers. 'This would have been the first canal in the world to be constructed even without knowing if there is any water available to flow through it,' he said, recalling that former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal refused to implement the order and instead returned the acquired land to its original owner farmers.Addressing the current controversy over the release of water to Haryana, Badal said the neighbouring state had already consumed more than its allocated share. 'Instead of being grateful to Punjab, it brazenly demands even more water,' he said.Must Watch

SAD accuses rival group of misusing party name, plans legal action
1 2 Chandigarh: Calling Giani Harpreet Singh-led rival faction 'Vakhra Chulha Dal', Shiromani Akali Dal ( SAD ) on Tuesday announced its decision to file a criminal complaint against the leaders of what it termed a "central agency-sponsored group". SAD accused the faction of attempting to misappropriate the name of the Shiromani Akali Dal, which it asserted is a registered and recognised party under the Election Commission's 1996 notification. SAD leader Daljit Singh Cheema said, "All delegates of the SAD were elected through a proper election process following the end of the previous working committee's term. The rival faction did not participate in the membership drive and failed to follow the party's constitutional norms." Cheema added that SAD members had paid a membership fee of Rs 10, valid for five years, as required by the party constitution. "The separate group did not conduct any such drive, and therefore, has no right to call their gathering a delegate session of the SAD. They can be proceeded against for cheating and forgery," he said. Calling the rival faction's actions "illegal, unconstitutional, and immoral," Cheema said SAD was consulting legal experts to file a formal criminal complaint. He also mentioned that the party would send letters to all media houses to clarify the factual position and prevent Giani Harpreet Singh's group from misusing the SAD name. "The proceedings suffered from the absence of the mandatory prosecution sanction," the counsel claimed. Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, representing the ED, opposed the petition, claiming that the requisite sanction had been obtained and placed before the trial court. The CBI and the ED have alleged that irregularities were committed in modifying Delhi's excise policy, with undue favours extended to certain license holders under the AAP government. The policy, introduced on November 17, 2021, was scrapped in September 2022 following corruption allegations.

Dhami censures rebel SAD chief's statement on SGPC
Amritsar: Harjinder Singh Dhami, president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), on Tuesday condemned former jathedar and head of the rebel faction of the Shiromani Akali Dal chief Giani Harpreet Singh's statement about "snatching" the SGPC, calling it an attack on the dignity, decorum, and historical significance of a key Sikh institution. In response to media queries, Dhami said the SGPC was a panthic institution, whose leadership was entrusted through the will of the sangat and service was carried out accordingly. He said the talk of forcibly taking over a Sikh institution revealed the intention that suggests he (Harpreet Singh) was allegedly being directed by someone else. Dhami emphasised that anyone could serve this institution constitutionally by winning elections, but unethical or immoral means were unacceptable. The SGPC head further said the Akali Dal was the only panthic party. He warned that efforts to undermine this panthic party were misguided and instead, the focus should be on unity. Dhami said the Sikh community faced many serious challenges today and it was important to address these sincerely. Making statements about capturing Sikh institutions only creates confusion within the community and should be avoided, he added.
