Saudi top diplomat says ‘at vanguard' of efforts to rebuild Syria

Daily Tribune2 days ago

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan travelled to Damascus yesterday, where he said his country would be at the forefront of efforts to rebuild Syria after nearly 14 years of civil war.
Prince Faisal had landed in the Syrian capital earlier, alongside an economic delegation on a visit to discuss ways to support Syria's war-ravaged economy, authorities said.
'We affirm that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will remain at the vanguard of countries standing by Syria in its path towards reconstruction and economic recovery,' Prince Faisal said in a joint press conference with his Syrian counterpart.
Saudi Arabia 'will present joint financial support alongside Qatar to public sector workers' in Syria, he added, while pointing to interest in Syria from Saudi investors.
He said Saudi economic delegations would visit Damascus soon, noting that 'work is underway to discuss investment support and economic and trade cooperation' between the two countries.
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, meanwhile, expressed his country's thanks 'for the role Saudi Arabia has played, particularly on the lifting of sanctions' by the United States.
Shaibani pointed to 'strategic initiatives aiming to restore infrastructure, replenish agriculture... and create real job opportunities for Syrians'.
Prince Faisal met Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, and visited Damascus's famous Umayyad Mosque alongside Shaibani.

EWA sign "Kafa'a" initiative implementation agreements

The Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) signed implementation agreements for the first phase of the national programme 'Kafa'a', aimed at improving energy efficiency in government buildings. The agreements were signed with Saudi-based Quantum Energy Solutions and ESTA Middle East, both specialised in energy efficiency services. Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed, President of EWA, emphasised that the initiative represents a strategic step in national efforts to enhance energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. He noted that the first phase targets energy efficiency upgrades in 12 government buildings, as part of a wider plan to cover 20 buildings during the current year. He added that the initiative is expected to save approximately 308 gigawatt-hours of electricity and reduce carbon emissions by nearly 154,000 tonnes by 2040, making it one of the Kingdom's flagship projects supporting the goal of carbon neutrality. The current phase includes buildings belonging to several ministries, including the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Justice and Islamic Affairs, and the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA). EWA will oversee all stages of project implementation and monitor the outcomes to ensure the intended targets are met. This will be carried out in collaboration with specialised companies delivering the programme, to enhance energy efficiency in both public and private sector facilities, while achieving sustainable operational savings and reducing carbon emissions. Launched in December 2023, the 'Kafa'a' programme is a national initiative designed to reduce electricity consumption in both public and private sector buildings and consequently lower carbon emissions. The initial implementation phase targets 20 government buildings. BNA(R)

Saudi FM Slams Israel's Obstruction of Arab Delegation Visit to Ramallah

Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan sharply criticized Israel on Sunday for obstructing the Arab-Islamic Ministerial Committee's scheduled visit to Ramallah, describing the move as a clear reflection of Israel's 'extremism and rejection of peace.' Speaking at a press conference in Amman following an extraordinary meeting of the committee focused on the Gaza crisis, Prince Faisal stressed that the only viable resolution to the Israel-Palestine conflict lies in the creation of an independent Palestinian state. Support for Palestinian Authority and Reform Agenda The Saudi foreign minister expressed the committee's support for the reform agenda being pursued by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. 'Despite facing an adversary that refuses to consider any solutions, the Palestinian Authority continues to honor its responsibilities and commitments,' he said. 'It remains the rational and legitimate party in this crisis.' Prince Faisal underscored the importance of recognizing the Palestinian leadership's efforts to reform internal governance despite ongoing conflict, portraying them as acting in the interests of both their people and the broader international community. Condemnation of Israel's Escalating Violence Prince Faisal condemned Israel's conduct in Gaza and the West Bank, calling it 'a war of extermination' and a deliberate attempt to dismantle the Palestinian cause. 'In Gaza, we see nothing but destruction. In the West Bank, steps are being taken to systematically weaken the Palestinian national movement,' he said. 'Israel's actions—including blocking our delegation—expose its unwillingness to engage in any peaceful process.' Call for Concrete International Support for Two-State Solution The Saudi minister reiterated that Arab and Islamic countries remain united in their demand for a sovereign Palestinian state. He also urged international actors—particularly in Europe—to adopt firmer stances that go beyond verbal support. 'Those who claim to support the two-state solution must back that position with tangible steps, including the formal recognition of Palestine,' he stated. 'Such recognition sends a strong signal to Israel that peace requires coexistence, not occupation.' Obstruction of Arab Delegation Confirmed The Arab-Islamic Ministerial Committee had planned to visit Ramallah on Sunday, but the visit was canceled due to Israel's refusal to allow the delegation's aircraft access to the occupied West Bank airspace, as confirmed by a statement from the Jordanian Foreign Ministry. 'This blatant obstruction speaks volumes about Israel's stance on international diplomatic efforts,' Prince Faisal said. Regional Cooperation and Continued Advocacy Prince Faisal arrived in Jordan as part of the committee's wider diplomatic tour aimed at ending the war and lifting the blockade on Gaza. He also met with Jordan's King Abdullah, during which the Palestine issue remained central to discussions. 'The Arab-Islamic Committee will continue its global advocacy to push for a just and lasting peace,' Prince Faisal concluded, 'and we will not accept any resolution that falls short of full Palestinian sovereignty.'
