Pep Guardiola says Manchester City's last two games are ‘massive'

Pep Guardiola has described Manchester City's bid to qualify for the Champions League as 'massive' as he challenged his stars to prove their worth.
City's underwhelming campaign will end without silverware following their 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in the final of the FA Cup.
They will now turn their attention to securing a spot in Europe's showpiece tournament with their fate still in their hands.

Victories in their final games of the Premier League season, at home to Bournemouth on Tuesday and at Fulham next weekend, will be enough to secure a place in the top five.
However, City will head into their next match at the Etihad outside of the qualification spots in sixth, albeit with a game in hand over their rivals.
Asked to quantify the importance of being in the Champions League, Guardiola said: 'It is obvious. Ask the same question to Arsenal, or Chelsea, or Nottingham Forest or Newcastle. Of course it is important. It is massive.
'We have to come back and we have to recover quickly. Yes, it is better to play against Bournemouth having won the FA Cup because victories help winning, but now we have to prove how strong we are.
'And from my point of view, we have two massively important games for the short-term future of this club.'
City started this season bidding to win a fifth consecutive Premier League title. It would have appeared unfathomable that they would end the season scrambling for a Champions League spot.
Ruben Dias continued: 'These last two games are like two massive finals, and they mean everything to us.
'We will feel however we have to feel today (after City's defeat to Palace), but tomorrow wake up strong and ready to go again.
'We controlled the game, and had a lot of chances but we didn't turn those chances into goals, and we only have ourselves to blame. We must do better.'

Matheus Cunha breaks silence after signing as Mason Greenwood reunion confirmed

Manchester United have confirmed the arrival of Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers but there's plenty more work left to do for Ruben Amorim over the summer Manchester United's busy summer has been continuing, with Matheus Cunha's arrival from Wolves now official. The Brazilian has joined in a £62.5million move, and is officially the first new arrival at Old Trafford during Ruben Amorim's first summer window. Amorim's side have already lost several senior stars this summer, with the club announcing their released and retained lists. Victor Lindelof, Cristian Eriksen and Jonny Evans will all leave when their contracts expire, though discussions remain over an extension for Tom Heaton. ‌ Cunha is unlikely to be the last new arrival, though. Despite failing to qualify for the Champions League - or indeed any UEFA competition - Amorim's team have money to spend. ‌ We're also anticipating a number of exits as United prepare to raise funds for further new faces. Bruno Fernandes might be staying put, but it's likely to be a different story when it comes to the likes of Marcus Rashford and Antony. We've got the latest from Cunha himself, as well as some updates on other deals. Here are Mirror Football 's Friday morning lines from around Old Trafford. Cunha breaks silence Matheus Cunha has opened up on his love for Manchester United after joining the club. The Brazilian's first Premier League move came when he left Atletico Madrid for Wolves, but he now has the chance to pull on United's famous red shirt. 'It is hard to put into words my feelings about becoming a Manchester United player," Cunha said. "Ever since I was a child in Brazil watching Premier League games on TV at my grandmother's house, United was my favourite English team and I dreamed of wearing the red shirt. "I want to thank my family and everyone who has helped me make that dream a reality. I can't wait for the start of pre-season to get to know my teammates and prepare for the season ahead. All my focus is now on working hard to become a valuable part of the team, and helping get this club back to the top.' ‌ Dortmund's Sancho stance Borussia Dortmund chief Sebastian Kehl has explained the club are not prioritising a third move for Jadon Sancho, England international Sancho left the German club for United in 2021 and returned on loan to help them reach the Champions League final in 2024. 'Of course, contact with Jadon is always there, in some way, because we have a very long history,' Kehl said as Dortmund prepare to begin their Club World Cup campaign. The deadline for registering players in time for the competition's group stage has already passed, and Sancho is still at Old Trafford. ‌ 'But it's not an issue for us right now," Kehl continued. "We have other priorities at the moment and that's why the Sancho issue was probably played up more in the media than discussed internally.' Greenwood handed United reunion Mason Greenwood will be United with Angel Gomes at Marseille next season. The pair were team-mates at Old Trafford, both making their senior debuts as teenagers before moving to France. ‌ While Marseille is Greenwood's first club in Ligue 1, Gomes first spent time with their rivals Lille. He spent five seasons with Les Dogues, playing more than 100 league games, but will move to Stade Velodrome after reaching an agreement in principle. Gomes made his senior England debut while at Lille, earning a call-up under interim boss Lee Carsley in 2024. Greenwood has also been capped by England, but has since switched his international allegiances to Jamaica. Thomas Frank appointed new Tottenham head coach on three-year deal after club paid hefty release clause to lure him from Brentford and replace sacked Ange Postecoglou

Thomas Frank has been confirmed as Tottenham 's new head coach on a three-year contract. Frank is moving across London after nine years at Brentford to succeed Ange Postecoglou, sacked last Friday, 16 days after his team won the Europa League. 'In Thomas we are appointing one of the most progressive and innovative head coaches within the game,' said a Spurs spokesman. 'He has a proven track record in player and squad development and we look forward to him leading the team as we prepare for the season ahead.' Brentford's director of football Phil Giles issued heartfelt thanks to Frank for his impact on the club he led to promotion in 2021. 'It has been a pleasure working alongside Thomas,' said Giles. 'From the moment he replaced Dean Smith, he understood what we were trying to build and his wisdom, coaching ability and emotional intelligence have helped transform the club. 'There have been so many special moments with Thomas and nobody will ever forget the day at Wembley for the play-off final or that emotional first Premier League game against Arsenal. 'But it's not just what you see on the pitch. He forged a special connection with our fans, helped develop and improve players, and was instrumental in implementing the culture that has seen Brentford go from strength to strength. 'However, just as when a player leaves, it provides an opportunity for someone else to come in and make their own impact. 'We will never forget Thomas, but now it is time to thank him and take the next steps in our journey with a new leader who we believe can be just as successful and influential.' Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy had identified 51-year-old Frank as the man he wanted before sacking Postecoglou last Friday and has spent most of this week negotiating compensation for Brentford for him and several of his coaching staff. Justin Cochrane will join Frank at Spurs although Brentford tried their utmost to keep him the 43-year-old, who spent nine years coaching career in Tottenham's academy. Cochrane, who joined the Bees three years ago from Manchester United is on Thomas Tuchel's England staff and so highly rated that Brentford considered him among the candidates for the head coach role. Also moving across London from the Getch Community Stadium are fitness coach Chris Haslam and analyst Joe Newton. Andreas Georgson will join the coaching team from Manchester United. Postecoglou's assistant coaches Mile Jedinak, Nick Montgomery and Sergio Raimundo have all left Spurs with Matt Wells and goalkeeping coach Rob Burch remaining. Postecoglou's success in delivering silverware, which he promised he would, means that the Dane will take charge of Tottenham in the Champions League, and he will want a squad that is able to compete at the top level. Reports had claimed Tottenham were looking to hijack Manchester United's push to sign Frank's golden boy Bryan Mbeumo from his now former club. However, sources have disclosed that Spurs are 'highly unlikely' to enter the race for the forward, who scored 20 goals in the Premier League last term. Last month, Mail Sport's Oliver Holt played a couple of sets of padel at Brentford's Osterley facility with Frank and assistant first-team coach Kevin O'Connor. During their day together, Frank explained what it takes to build a successful culture at a football club - like he has at Brentford and continue to improve it one step after another. 'We stand on the shoulders of others,' Frank told Mail Sport in an interview last month. 'And we build on foundations they have built for us. We need to acknowledge that every single time. 'It's all about the ego. So how fragile is it or how big is it? Some people need reassurance all the time and to say, 'The reason I'm so good is because of me and has nothing to do with these top players and good staff'. It depends who you are. 'So you need to believe in your own skill set, but be humble enough to know there's a lot of hard work and you're not the only one and all that. So I'm confident in myself and what I'm capable of doing. Also humble enough to know I can do nothing alone. No one can. 'Look, if you ask whether I'm tough, I think I'm extremely resilient. And I think we've all got a dark side. I've got five per cent dark side in me. Even my wife says that. 'You need that dark side, to have an edge and I have an edge. I'm extremely competitive, very determined, and you don't survive in this business if you're not tough.'

Man City complete the £34m signing of Rayan Cherki from Lyon - with five-year deal announced just as special transfer window for Club World Cup closed

Manchester City have completed the signing of Rayan Cherki for an initial £30.5m - rising to £34m - fee from Lyon. The France international becomes the club's third addition of the window following the arrivals of Rayan Ait-Nouri and Marcus Bettinelli. He has penned a five-year deal that will keep him at the Etihad until 2030. Pep Guardiola 's side have been working to complete a series of deals before Tuesday's 7pm transfer deadline for clubs participating in the Club World Cup. The 21-year-old will be eligible for selection for the side, whose campaign gets underway against Moroccan outfit Wydad AC on June 18. Cherki, who was named UEFA Europa League Young Player of the Season after finishing the top assist provider in the competition, said he is excited to develop his game under the City boss. 'This is a dream for me,' said Cherki. 'Honestly, to be joining a club like Manchester City and have the opportunity to make the next step in my career here is something very, very special. I love this sport, and I can't wait to develop further here in Manchester with Pep and his backroom staff. 'Everyone knows how good City are – they have been so successful for many years now. The responsibility to help the team continue winning is something I want to embrace. 'I would only leave Lyon for a project I really believe in and everything at City suggests I can develop my game and help the team be successful in the future. I can't wait to show City fans what I can do.' Director of Football Hugo Viana added: 'We're very happy to have Rayan at City. We want to bring top talent to the club, and he falls into that category. 'He's a player our scouts have watched for a long time, and we have all been impressed with his skill and creativity. I am convinced our fans will be excited to see him play. 'There's no doubt that he's now in the best place possible to develop further under Pep's guidance and I really believe he can become a world-class player with our support and direction.' City are close to completing the deal for AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders, who has undergone a medical at the club. Reijnders, the energetic central midfielder, is joining for an initial £46.3m in what has been a fast start to Viana's first summer as director of football. He is also expected to be named in Guardiola's travelling party for the summer tournament.
