Drug abuse down in Kelantan, but youth still most at risk
Kelantan National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) director Supindi Usop said 66 percent of all cases involved individuals aged between 15 and 39, making up the largest group in the state's statistics.
He said this trend is worrying as it involves the younger generation, who should be the nation's future asset.
Supindi said Kelantan recorded 11,280 drug abuse cases as of March, compared to 11,928 cases in the same period last year, placing the state fourth highest in Malaysia.
'A total of 5,787 individuals are undergoing rehabilitation at three centres across the state, with 97 percent of them involved in the abuse of methamphetamine pills (pil kuda),' he told Bernama at the Kelantan-level 2025 National Anti-Drug Day event today.
Even more concerning, 114 teenagers under the age of 18 were found to be involved in drug abuse, with 94 currently undergoing voluntary treatment at the Pengkalan Chepa Rehabilitation Centre and 20 at the centre in Bachok, Supindi revealed.
'We've observed that more parents are becoming aware and are proactively sending their children for voluntary treatment. This is a positive step towards breaking the cycle of early addiction,' he said.
On the factors contributing to the decline, Supindi explained that one key reason was the closure of illegal entry points along the Malaysia-Thailand border since last December, which has helped curb the inflow of drugs.
Meanwhile, Kelantan Youth, Sports, NGOs and Community Unity Committee chairman Zamakhshari Muhamad, who also heads the state chapter of the Malaysian Drug Prevention Association (Pemadam), said that despite the drop in numbers, the overall figures remain high and concerning.
'Prevention, enforcement and awareness education must be intensified. We cannot afford to be complacent just because the statistics show a decline,' he emphasised.
He added that Pemadam will organise a six-month strategic workshop starting at the end of this month in Pasir Mas, in collaboration with various enforcement agencies and local communities.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Police busted a 'pil kuda' (yaba) trafficking syndicate and seized drugs weighing over 35.4kg, valued at RM5.04 million, during six raids in Pasir Mas and Tumpat, Kelantan, last Friday. Acting director of the Bukit Aman narcotics crime investigation department Mat Zani @ Salahuddin Che Ali said six local suspects, comprising five men and one woman aged between 25 and 39, were arrested in the operation, Bernama reported. He said the operation's success was the result of year-long intelligence gathering by Bukit Aman in cooperation with the Kelantan police contingent to combat the activities of the syndicate, believed to be active since 2022. Police first stopped a car on Jalan Gajah Mati, Banggol Chica, Pasir Mas, and arrested a 34-year-old male suspect. They found 115g of yaba pills in the car and 112g at his home nearby. Police also searched a cattle shed with six cows behind his house and found 20kg of yaba pills hidden in a pile of cow dung. 'The syndicate's modus operandi was to use the cattle shed as a storage facility before distributing the drug to the local market,' Mat Sani said. In simultaneous raids, police also arrested another male suspect and seized his four-wheel-drive vehicle as well as 15.4kg of yaba pills. 'In further raids at several houses around Pasir Mas and Tumpat, we detained three more suspects, including a woman, who is the wife of the first suspect. 'We believe the profits from selling these pills were used to open other businesses such as a seafood restaurant in Tanah Merah, a salon and online businesses. 'They were laundering the illegal proceeds from their drug activities by engaging in these businesses,' Mat Zani said. He added that the syndicate targeted school students and teenagers throughout Kelantan, the Klang Valley and Johor Bahru. Police also seized jewellery, branded bags and several luxury cars worth over RM1.1 million. Initial urine tests found all the suspects negative for drugs.

Federal agency director in Kelantan to face corruption, power abuse charges, says MACC chief
KOTA BARU, July 3 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will charge a director in a federal government department in Kelantan soon for alleged abuse of power, corruption and false claims. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the director, who is about to retire, will be charged soon after the deputy public prosecutor agreed to the proposed charges submitted by Kelantan MACC. 'I do not want to mention his name but it will be announced soon. The senior civil servant may be charged within two or three weeks from now or maybe even sooner. 'This is a continuous effort by Kelantan MACC in carrying out their responsibility to look into issues involving leakages. This is MACC's previous strategy that I have announced, where we see the issue of leakage in the country as our focus to resolve corruption issues as best as possible,' he said. He said this in a press conference after witnessing the handover ceremony of the new Kelantan MACC director, Azmin Yusoff, and the previous incumbent, Rosli Husain, here, today. Azam said since he was assigned to Kelantan from 1989 to 2000, many changes have occurred and new approaches are needed in operations, prevention and community education. 'Any action must have an impact on the community so that they feel the MACC's actions. If we are still at the same level in resolving corruption and abuse of power issues at the national or state level, it will not change. So to make the public feel our actions, we must focus. '...With the presence of efficient, experienced and highly skilled officers and staff, this strategy can be implemented nationwide,' he said. Commenting further, he said the scale of the director who will be prosecuted should be taken as a lesson. 'If the director himself is involved in a criminal issue, obviously he cannot lead and this is something we need to emphasise in the public service,' he said. Intellectually disabled teen charged with murder

(Bernama pic) TANAH MERAH : A teenager with intellectual disability was charged in the magistrates' court here today with the murder of a senior citizen. Tuan Izmal Firdaus Tuan Muda, 18, nodded after the charge was read to him before magistrate Tun Faez Fikhrie. No plea was recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court. He was charged with murdering Shamsudin Mohamed, 60, at the side of the road next to a grocery store in Kampung Buluh, Gual Ipoh, here between 6pm and 6.30pm on June 19. The charge, framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, provides for the death penalty or imprisonment of not less than 30 to 40 years and a minimum whipping of 12 strokes, upon conviction. The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Siti Hajar Mazlan while the accused was unrepresented. The court set Sept 2 for mention of the case.
