Record $7m tobacco haul as police target crime assets
SA police seized illegal tobacco and vape products from a truck on the Lincoln Highway at Whyalla on May 6.
This led officers to a warehouse in the Adelaide suburb of Salisbury, which is alleged to have been supplying retail outlets across the state with illicit tobacco products, Detective Chief Inspector Brett Featherby said.
A $7.3 million haul of cigarettes and tobacco was found in a warehouse in suburban Adelaide.
More than seven million cigarettes and 3.9 tonnes of loose tobacco were seized, valued at $7.3 million.
Packages of loose tobacco, or "chop chop", were found in 12 large freezers, showing the extent of the distribution centre that was supplying the metropolitan and rural areas in South Australia, Chief Insp Featherby said.
He said organised crime syndicates had been dealt a major blow with police restraining $22.8 million in assets, including more than $9 million in cash from two bank accounts.
Police will seek forfeiture orders on assets including houses, vehicles and silver bullion restrained under the Criminal Assets Confiscation Act.
"One of the keys for Operation Eclipse is actually disrupting the financial operations of these criminal syndicates trying to establish in the South Australian market," Chief Insp Featherby said.
Officers have searched 186 premises and seized illicit tobacco products valued at $25.3 million.
Two men have been charged over the latest haul and there have been a total of 37 arrests for offences including blackmail, possessing tobacco products for sale, arson, money laundering and serious criminal trespass.
Operation Eclipse, formed in September 2024 to investigate serious criminal offending linked to tobacco and vape sales, is collaborating with federal and interstate law enforcement agencies that are also fighting the illicit trade.
There have been more than 100 firebombings in Victoria in two years, while seven men have been arrested across Sydney over the theft of illegal cigarettes and tobacco in the past year.
Queensland is the latest state to record a rise in the violent attacks on tobacconists and police have raided dozens of premises in the past two months.
In March, the federal government committed $157 million to federal health, crime and tax agencies across two years to strengthen enforcement and target crime gangs.
SA Police have had "excellent public support", receiving more than 400 calls to Crime Stoppers, Chief Insp Featherby said.
"We're still after the locations where illicit tobacco is being stored, and information relating to anybody that may be helping facilitate the criminal activity," he said.

Athena Georgopoulos and her partner Andrew Gunn were found brutally murdered inside their home in Melbourne, Australia on Monday, Aug. 11, according to and The Age. Georgopoulos, 39, was five months pregnant at the time of her killing, per the outlets. Gunn, 50, was reportedly found decapitated with his head on a spike inside the home, which was covered in graffiti. Local police are still investigating to determine if there's a connection with the couple's murders, reported. About four hours after police first responded to the couple's home, an unhoused 34-year-old man was arrested at a train station roughly four miles away with blood still on his shirt. The suspect was charged with two counts of murder, according to The Age. 'The message here is that it appears to be a targeted attack,' local homicide detective Dean Thomas said, according to The Age. 'Our suspect is known to the address.' The news outlets reported that a range of graffiti was found sprayed on the outside walls of the home, some of which were captured by overhead news cameras. 'Karma is not a menu' read one message. 'Meat is murder,' read another. Another spray painted message said, 'Enough is Enough,' while another reportedly read ''betrayal, unpredictable, inevitable,' according to 'Homicide Squad detectives will work to determine if the graffiti is relevant to the murder investigation,' a police spokesperson told the outlet. Georgopoulos' aunt Petty Dilveridis was reportedly spotted at the crime scene distraught and trying to get past police tape into her niece's home, according to the outlets. She was later seen crying and sitting on a curb outside. Dilveridis told The Herald Sun that Athena was excited about being pregnant and never thought she'd become a mother due to her age. 'She was so looking forward to having a baby, because she was 39 [and] she never thought she could have one,' the victim's aunt said. Read the original article on People

‘Traumatic': New details after two found dead
Neighbours heard yelling and called triple-0 before a man and woman were found dead in a home in Melbourne's suburbs, police have revealed. The alarm was raised at about 10pm on Monday, with police making the grim discovery at a property on Adrienne Crescent at Mount Waverley. The woman has since been identified as a 39-year-old Mount Waverley woman. Police are yet to formally identify the man, but believe him to be a 50-year-old Mount Waverley man. 'Next of kin for both deceased have been notified of the incident,' a statement read. A 34-year-old manof no fixed addresswas arrested nearby at Westall train station at about 1.40am on Tuesday. He remains in custody. Aerial images of the house show a blue State Emergency Service gazebo has been set up against an outside wall of the home. The words 'betrayal', 'enough is enough' and 'karma' are spray-painted on the house wall next to the gazebo. 'Police are aware of graffiti on the property in Mount Waverley where the bodies of two people were located last night,' a police spokesperson said. 'Homicide Squad detectives will work to determine if the graffiti is relevant to the murder investigation.' At least six overalled forensics officers were seen going back and forth from the house to a van, as a swarm of police keep the crime scene cordoned off. Speaking from the scene on Tuesday morning, Melbourne homicide squad Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said police suspect the man in custody was known to the pair, one of whom was believed to have lived at the property. 'We believe that there is a link between our suspect and the address,' Inspector Thomas said. 'Police were called at about 9.20 (am) in relation to a welfare check at the address based on some yelling that was heard from the property. 'A second call was then made that suggested it was perhaps more urgent than what the first call was and police arrived minutes later, and obviously they found the male and female inside the premises deceased.' 'Of course, that's very traumatic … obviously they weren't expecting that last night,' he said. Inspector Thomas would not elaborate on how the people died, but said a weapon that was not a gun was used. 'We believe he (the suspect) may be of no fixed place of abode,' he said. 'It appears to be targeted and our suspect is known to the address.' The police's critical response and dog squad units were called to the scene on Monday night. 'The person that we took into custody was in the company of two large dogs,' he said. 'I think that would look fairly obvious to people who may have been in the area.' Inspector Thomas urged anyone who saw anything suspicious around Adrienne Court, Ferntree Gully Road and the Westall railway station to contact police. Images from the scene overnight show heavily armed police surrounding the house as the street was cordoned off. The scene this morning is still cordoned off and the 34-year-old is in custody. '(He) will be interviewed by detectives in relation to the deaths,' a police spokesperson said early on Tuesday. 'At this stage police are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.' No charges have been laid. Police are appealing for witnesses or anybody with information or footage to come forward.
