Chris Evans' Virgin Radio breakfast show co-star Vassos Alexander gets visibly emotional as he departs the show after 14 years

Daily Mail18-07-2025
Chris Evans' Virgin Radio co-host Vassos Alexander couldn't contain his emotions as he departed the show on Friday.
The sports presenter, born in 1973, paid tribute to his co-star, 59, describing his 14-year stint on the airwaves with Chris as the 'honour of my life'.
Virgin Radio also paid tribute to Vassos, sharing a clip of his tribute to Chris that was simply described as being 'The mother of Bromances'.
A visibly emotional Vassos said: 'It has been the honour of my life to work on this show and I still can't quite believe I'm leaving voluntarily.
'Much more importantly, I value our friendship above everything and long may that continue.'
Vassos initially joined The Chris Evans Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2 in 2011 before the pair moved to the Breakfast Show on Virgin Radio.
Paying further tribute to Chris, Vassos decided to play Chris's favourite song as a parting gift.
He said: 'There's not much we don't know about each other, but I only just discovered this week that this is your favourite song.
'So Chris, your friend Vassos has picked the song Wild West Hero by ELO. Why? Because he loves you.'
'Oh, Vassos. What are we going to do? We can't start crying now.'
Vassos went on to insist that he was not crying before Chris joked that he doesn't cry either.
He added: 'This is lovely for us, but it is going to be a rubbish listen if we just cry for three hours!'
Vassos's departure from the show was announced back in May when he admitted that while he loved the show, he felt like there was something missing in his life and wanted to pursue other opportunities elsewhere.
He said at the time: 'You've got to follow your heart.'
Fans were quick to take to social media to thank Vassos for his work on the show and to wish him all the best for the future
Fans were quick to take to social media to thank Vassos, whose broadcasting accolades also include the Parkrun podcast, for his work on the show and to wish him all the best for the future.
They wrote: 'Going to miss you Vassos and the energy you bring to the show - good luck whatever you do next.';
'Will miss Vassos on the breakfast show but I wish him all of the best and happiness for the future.'
Further tribute was paid to Vassos by Virgin Radio, who shared a montage of his best moments over the years on social media.
This included clips of the presenter singing, attempting the 'Sprite challenge', where he tried to drink an entire bottle of the drink without burping, and head-butting a football.

Sir Paul McCartney's ex-wife Heather Mills locked in row with train passenger over her prosthetic leg

HEATHER Mills found herself locked in a row with a train passenger over her prosthetic leg. The businesswoman and former model, 57, was married to Beatles legend Paul McCartney from 2002 to 2008. 3 Heather told how she clashed with a fellow train passenger - who didn't realise that one of her legs is prosthetic. She said: "This is for everyone who travels on a train and is getting annoyed because of a tall leggy blonde who's having to stretch her leg out. "The reason for this is because you can't pull your leg right in because the underneath of the prosthetic cuts into the back of the leg. "So just think twice before you turn your nose up." Continuing, Heather said she "had a moany man" who had asked her to move her leg. She added: "I tried to explain and he wouldn't listen. "So I took my leg off - and he shut up." Heather spoke directly to the camera in her social media clip - which was recorded last weekend. Heather met Sir Paul McCartney at an awards ceremony in 1999. The pair appeared publicly together on her 32nd birthday and he proposed to her in July 2001. Tesco's birthday cake sandwich launch divides opinion on social media

Tesco has launched a birthday cake sandwich, complete with strawberry jam, soft cheese, vanilla frosting and sprinkles – but the candle isn't included. The limited-edition sandwich, between slices of brioche-style white bread, contains 31.g of sugar – 35% of an adult's recommended daily intake – and will be on sale for £3 at 1,000 stores for four weeks. Videos of people trying out the sandwich have attracted tens of thousands of views on TikTok over the past 24 hours. Some Tesco customers expressed scepticism on Reddit. 'Birthday cake is not a flavour,' one said. 'It's not like everyone has the exact same cake for their birthday.' Another suggested that creating a birthday cake sandwich should be a criminal offence. 'The Earl of Sandwich did not intend this to happen,' one Reddit user wrote. 'Bet he's rolling in his grave.' The fourth Earl of Sandwich is said to have invented the sandwich in 1762 when he asked for a serving of roast beef to be placed between two slices of bread so that he did not have to leave the table where he was playing cards. Tesco said the 'soiree sandwich' was being released to mark the 30th anniversary of the Clubcard. TikTok users have suggested it reminds them of a jam sandwich. 'It tastes like that, but with a bit of cream,' one said. 'If you love a jam sandwich, it's literally that – but elevated,' said another. 'This is way better than I thought it would be.' It follows the release in June by Marks & Spencer of a strawberry and cream sandwich, nicknamed the 'strawberry sando'. Nutritional information for Tesco's sandwich shows that it contains 515 calories with 8.4g saturated fat: 42% of an adult's recommended daily intake. Despite being a 'dessert sandwich', it can be part of the Tesco meal deal for £4, alongside a drink and snack. Tesco's brand manager, Violaine Barthe, said: 'With 3.1 million sandwiches sold in Tesco each year, sandwiches make up a big proportion of Clubcard purchases and so there was only one way to celebrate Clubcard turning 30. 'The birthday cake Sandwich is a celebration not to be missed and we can't wait to hear the nation's feedback.'
