The BJP can't win in Tamil Nadu by showcasing Lord Murugan, says CPI State secretary Mutharasan
Communist Party of India (CPI) State secretary R. Mutharasan said on Tuesday that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could not gain ground in Tamil Nadu by invoking Lord Murugan.
Speaking at the launch of the logo for the CPI's 26th State Conference, to be held in Salem from August 15 to 18, Mr. Mutharasan said a special seminar, Velga Jananayagam, Veelga Fascism, would take place on the evening of August 16. INDIA bloc leaders, including DMK president and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, are expected to take part in it.
CPI national secretary D. Raja and other senior leaders are to take part at the conference that will discuss national and international political developments and pass political resolutions.
Asked about BJP leaders claiming that parties in the DMK-led alliance would switch sides, Mr. Mutharasan said the DMK-led coalition was based on ideology and not on electoral considerations. 'The alliance has successfully contested in two Lok Sabha and other elections. It will remain a strong ideological front,' he said.
Criticising the BJP's recent strategies, he said, 'The BJP, which has failed to win over the Tamil Nadu electors on various issues, is now trying to capitalise on Lord Murugan. The conference of Lord Murugan devotees held in Madurai resembled a political event promoting Hindu unity and calling for the dissolution of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department.' He added that the BJP's religious appeals did not yield any result even in Ayodhya in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, suggesting that they were unlikely to succeed in Tamil Nadu either.
Mr. Mutharasan alleged that the Madurai conference disrespected iconic Dravidian leaders such as Periyar E.V. Ramasamy and C.N. Annadurai. He criticised AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami for extending his wishes to the event, claiming that the AIADMK's alliance with the BJP was due to 'political compulsion'.
As for seat-sharing with the DMK for the 2026 Assembly election, Mr. Mutharasan said such matters would be discussed at the appropriate time. 'Every party naturally wants more seats, but there is no issue within the DMK-led alliance. Chief Minister Stalin is administering the State excellently; he has even surpassed his father M. Karunanidhi. He is firm in his ideological stance, and all parties in the alliance appreciate his leadership,' he said.
Regarding the possibility of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) joining the DMK-led alliance, Mr. Mutharasan said it was up to Mr. Stalin, the alliance leader, to make such decisions.

Jagan slams Andhra govt for ‘failing to support students and unemployed youth'
'The lathi-charge on students in Narasaraopet exposed the government's violent, intolerant nature,' said Reddy in a post on X, referring to police dispersing the protesters in Narasaraopeta city in Palnadu district. Hailing the statewide 'Yuvatha Poru (youth struggle)' protest led by his party on Monday against the alleged unfulfillment of giving unemployment allowances, Reddy said that the government has failed to honour its promises such as jobs and education support. Amaravati, Jun 24 (PTI) YSRCP chief and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Tuesday lashed out at the ruling TDP-led coalition government, accusing it of betraying youth and students. The former CM questioned why students were allegedly assaulted for simply submitting representations and asking for the implementation of the Rs 3,000 monthly unemployment allowance as promised by the TDP during the election campaign. Reddy questioned how many of the 1.25 crore unemployed youth in the state received the allowance. The YSRCP supremo further alleged that Rs 6,400 crore in dues from the erstwhile YSRCP government schemes, Jagananna Vidya Deevena and Vasathi Deevena, remained unpaid, 'forcing students to abandon education and seek jobs.' He alleged that only Rs 750 crore was released from the Rs 4,200 crore due under the fee reimbursement scheme, while Rs 2,200 crore was pending under hostel assistance. He warned Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu against crushing dissent and declared that betrayal, lies and neglect would not go unpunished by the people. We were merely invitees to Murugan meet: Udhayakumar
Madurai: Senior AIADMK leader R B Udhayakumar has reiterated that their party leaders attended the Murugan devotee conference as invited guests, believing it wouldn't be political or politicised. In a video statement on Tuesday, he stated that the conference has nothing to do with AIADMK and doesn't reflect its principles or views. His statement comes after the party faced backlash over a video of Periyar and Anna played during the conference reportedly making disrespectful references to them. Udhayakumar said the DMK is continuously targeting AIADMK leaders and Edappadi K Palaniswami instead of focusing on welfare schemes and projects for the benefit of the people of Tamil Nadu . He said they attended the conference as a gesture of courtesy. "The DMK knows this very well. We didn't even know about the video of Periyar and Anna that was played during the conference as we couldn't see it from where we were seated. We will never give up on our principles, unlike DMK which compromises easily," he said. The AIADMK leader said EPS has taken strong stands against BJP even as an alliance partner, and no disrespect to Anna or Amma will be tolerated. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Become a Sanomentology Practitioner and Master the World's Most Powerful Method for Change Sanomentology Sign Up Undo "Even in the Cauvery water issue, we stood up for the people of Tamil Nadu. "They could have chosen not to criticise anyone in the meeting, which was attended by representatives from all parties," he said. Meanwhile, members of Madurai People's Federation for Religious Harmony submitted a petition on Tuesday to Madurai city police commissioner seeking action against the organisers of the Murugan devotees conference for 'violating' court guidelines.
