Data limitations hindering AI adoption: insights from financial services

You've likely heard the adage that 'You can't have an AI strategy without a data strategy.' But what does that mean in practice? As someone who regularly explores this question with data leaders, I've gained insights into the challenges organizations face when implementing AI and how they're overcoming them.
Enterprise data management is a daunting task, even before factoring in the levels of accuracy, completeness, and consistency required to bring reliable AI applications to market. And challenges are widespread. According to a survey by EY, only 36% of senior leaders report that their organizations are investing fully in data infrastructure—covering quality, accessibility, and governance of data—to support AI initiatives at scale. Another EY survey found that 67% of leaders say data infrastructure is holding them back.
I, too, am no stranger to how data limitations impact enterprise initiatives. Inaccurate and incomplete data impacts AI-driven marketing campaigns—from misdirecting target marketing efforts to potentially perpetuating societal bias. However, I've found that the financial services industry has been setting a great example on how to embrace data readiness, paving the way for efficient AI adoption.
The conversations reveal a common understanding: Successful AI implementation doesn't depend on good technology; it requires strong data strategies and judgment to know when and where to deploy AI effectively.
FINANCIAL SERVICES MAKING DATA 'AI-READY'
Data readiness is often misunderstood as a technical checklist, but in reality, it requires a fundamental shift in how we think about data. Historically, financial services have relied on data labels and tags that seemed self-evidently correct for reporting purposes. However, AI demands a deeper level of scrutiny—moving beyond surface accuracy to ensure that the data output truly reflects the nuances needed for machine learning models to perform effectively.
One of the most striking examples I've encountered involved a financial services company's three-year effort to build a discriminative AI model. Despite having what they thought was a well-labeled dataset, early attempts resulted in poor accuracy. It wasn't until consultation with their algorithm team that they uncovered a crucial gap: The data labels were accurate for reporting purposes, but failed to account for variability in market conditions and trade parameters.
To address this, the team applied techniques like principal component analysis (PCA) and interquartile range (IQR) filtering to reduce noise in their data. They also created new features specifically designed to filter training datasets, identifying and isolating trades that fit typical implementation patterns. These methods transformed data from being merely correct to truly AI-ready—fit for the purpose of building reliable models.
This example highlights the importance of viewing data as more than static resources. Instead, it's something to be actively curated and continuously refined. AI readiness isn't about having a perfect dataset; it's about understanding the imperfections and compensating for them through thoughtful design and ongoing iteration.
TACKLING DATA GAPS WITH TRANSPARENCY AND COLLABORATION
Addressing data gaps is rarely a solitary effort. Many leaders I've spoken to have embraced transparency and collaboration, which are invaluable mechanisms for enhancing data quality and driving meaningful AI outcomes. This approach is one that we should all adopt as we embark on our AI journeys.
In my experience, the most successful organizations have implemented transparency frameworks around AI initiatives, and they typically center around three pillars:
1. Data Disclosure
Leading firms openly share what data was used in a model and, more importantly, what data they wish they had. Being upfront about these gaps can lead to valuable feedback from clients and colleagues, helping to identify areas where additional data collection or adjustments are needed.
2. Feature Transparency
Forward-thinking organizations disclose both the features used in their models as well as those that were intentionally excluded. This approach sparks valuable discussions with stakeholders who may even identify features that hadn't been considered, leading to significant model improvements.
3. Model Selection Rationale
AI trailblazers explain their reasoning behind the models they use, whether it's an XGBoost, random forest, or a less transparent neural network. This clarity builds trust with both internal teams and external clients, ensuring they feel included in the process rather than sidelined by it.
When implemented, these principles help foster a culture of openness that addresses skepticism head-on. Organizations embracing these approaches can see more success as they create an environment where data quality issues are identified early and addressed collaboratively. This structured transparency makes data more accessible and understandable across the enterprise, bridging the gap between technical teams and business stakeholders.
A FRAMEWORK FOR THOUGHTFUL AI DEPLOYMENT
When it comes to deploying AI, whether in financial services or another industry, one of the most important insights I've gleaned is that just because you can build a model doesn't mean you should deploy it. Thoughtful AI deployment isn't about rushing to apply AI to every problem—it's about making purposeful decisions that consider both the value AI can add and its associated risks.
As one senior data leader emphasized in a recent conversation, this starts with a clear understanding of the context in which a model will be used. They shared how their team once spent months manually tagging data to ensure a generative AI model could provide accurate and contextualized responses. This process was labor-intensive but critical to building trust in the model's outputs, particularly in a regulated industry like finance, where mistakes carry significant reputational and compliance risks.
Another key consideration is knowing when AI is not the right tool for the job. Sometimes, a simpler solution, like a Tableau dashboard or a regression model, is a better fit. Being transparent about where your organization chooses not to deploy AI—and why—is just as important as highlighting successes. This openness builds trust, both within your organization and with clients.
AI'S FUTURE IN FINANCIAL SERVICES
Ultimately, deploying AI thoughtfully requires good judgment, and that judgment must be guided by the principle that AI should enhance human decision-making rather than replace it. Financial services are on the fast track to adoption, and by focusing on thoughtful deployment, transparency, and collaboration, we can unlock AI's potential while ensuring it remains a tool to empower human decision-making.

By Lucy Raitano LONDON (Reuters) -A rout in shares of European companies embracing artificial intelligence deepened this week, as powerful new AI models raise questions about whether sectors from software to data analytics could find themselves overtaken by the technology. European software stocks, including Germany's SAP and France's Dassault Systemes, tumbled on Tuesday as worries that AI will disrupt the software sector spread through the market. That followed a downgrade to U.S. rival Adobe on Monday by broker Melius Research. Since mid-July, shares in markets and data group LSEG, UK software firm Sage, and French IT consulting group Capgemini have dropped 14.4%, 10.8% and 12.3% respectively. Such companies - dubbed AI adopters by analysts - are investing heavily in the technology to beef up their products and services. Amid a dearth of European AI companies and suppliers, their shares had benefitted as investors in the region sought a way to tap the AI boom powering U.S. markets. But the release of ever more powerful AI tools appears to have prompted a rethink among some market players. Last week, OpenAI launched its GPT-5 model, the latest iteration of the AI technology that has helped transform global business and culture since ChatGPT arrived in late 2022. Kunal Kothari, a fund manager at Aviva Investors, also pointed to the July 15 release of Anthropic's Claude for Financial Services. "The app that came out has now challenged an investment case around London Stock Exchange (LSEG), around the provision of financial data," he said. "We're at the stage now with every iteration of GPT or Claude that comes out ... it's multiples more capable than the previous generation. The market's thinking: 'oh, wait, that challenges this business model'." The drop in European adopter stocks contrasts with broader market gains. Since mid-July, London's FTSE 100 is up 2.5% and Europe's STOXX 600 up 0.6%, while U.S. indexes have scaled record highs, largely powered by tech stocks. Exacerbating matters is the fact that many European adopter stocks trade on high multiples, making them vulnerable to any potential negative news, according to Bernie Ahkong, Chief Investment Officer at hedge fund UBS O'Connor. The STOXX 600 trades at an average price-to-earnings multiple of 17 times, while SAP - whose shares are down 7.2% since mid-July after posting their biggest daily drop since late 2020 on Tuesday - trades at around 45 times. WILL AI 'EAT SOFTWARE'? Although many AI adopter stocks are struggling, some investors say markets will eventually take a more systematic approach, picking out potential winners and losers. "At the moment, it feels like the market's just shooting first and putting them all in a 'challenged basket'," said Aviva's Kothari, referring to the decline in UK AI adopters. The hype around new AI models has led to the resurfacing of 2017 comments from Jensen Huang, the CEO of AI chipmaking behemoth Nvidia, that "AI is going to eat software". "We don't disagree, but we believe some delineation is warranted here, as not all software companies are equally exposed," said Steve Wreford, portfolio manager on the global thematic equity team at Lazard Asset Management. He said those with software deeply embedded into client company workflows, or with hard-to-replicate proprietary data, still had strong competitive advantages. Paddy Flood, portfolio manager and global sector specialist, technology, at Schroders, said it was important to distinguish between different types of software. "Enterprise-grade applications are less exposed, given their mission-critical nature, the complexity involved in replacing them, and the value of a trusted vendor ensuring ongoing service," he said. Aviva's Kothari also flagged the benefits of having software deeply embedded with customers, citing UK credit data firm Experian as an example. "It has lots of data unique to it, but it's also hugely embedded in the workflows of financial institutions. They want to make a loan, they need Experian," he said, also highlighting Britain's Sage. He holds both stocks, along with LSEG, but cautioned that proprietary data alone may no longer be enough to protect businesses. "I just don't think data is a big enough moat anymore," he said. The selloff in AI adopter stocks could be an opportunity for investors to pick the winners, said UBS O'Connor's Ahkong. "Some of the affected names will actually be able to use AI as an opportunity and tailwind for earnings, but need to prove that from here and that will take time," Ahkong said. But how much time the companies have is unclear. Some investors were already warning earlier this year that the clock was ticking for big spenders on AI to show returns. Big construction project planned for Huntoon Street

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The City of Topeka held a public meeting on Wednesday to discuss an upcoming reconstruction project for Huntoon Street. The project, managed by construction company Bartlett and West, will cost an estimated $14 million and is set to begin in March 2027 and finish in November 2029. The project aims to improve infrastructure along Huntoon Street by introducing a single lane with a shared-use path and on-street parking. The project is expected to mirror the work previously done on 12th Street. 'You do not need two driving lanes on Huntoon, but you do need something there,' Project Manager Jeff Lolley said. 'A bike lane is another facility that we also can offer for folks that have a lot of interest in that throughout town.' The Huntoon Street project will be executed in three phases, starting at Harrison Street and moving east to west and ending at Gage Street. Topeka Fire Department battling house fire 'We are going to do the heavy construction in three segments to try to get each segment done so we don't have residents and other people that live along those areas under construction, inconvenienced, any longer than they have to be,' Topeka Public Works Director Steve Groen said.
