Hiap Huat acquires land, buildings from Paka Petroleum for RM9.5mil

KUALA LUMPUR: Hiap Huat Holdings Bhd has received a notice of acceptance to acquire assets comprising land, buildings, plant and machinery worth RM9.5 million at the Teluk Kalong Industrial Area, Kemaman, Terengganu, from Paka Petroleum Sdn Bhd (PPSB).
In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, the company said its wholly owned subsidiary, Relgnite Energy Sdn Bhd, entered into a sales and purchase agreement with PPSB for the asset purchases.
The proposed acquisition is expected to be completed before December 31, 2025.
According to the valuation report, Hiap Huat said the market value of the assets was assessed at RM11.8 million as of the valuation dated March 10, 2024.
"The proposed acquisition of the assets is strategically aligned with the group's objectives to enhance its operational efficiency and service delivery.
"This location's proximity to our existing customers in Paka, Terengganu, will significantly improve response times and enable the provision of higher-quality services," it said.
Hiap Huat said the acquired assets come with all necessary governmental licenses, ready-to-use machinery and a customer base, which will allow for immediate operationalisation.
"This ready-to-use setup offers substantial time savings and efficiency benefits compared to the alternative of establishing a new facility from the ground up," it added.
The company expects the acquisition to contribute positively to enhancing the group's overall growth prospects by expanding its customer base to include those currently served by PPSB.
Hiap Huat said the acquisition includes licenses approved for handling new types of hazardous waste, which the group currently does not possess.
"This expansion of capabilities is anticipated to open new avenues for business and generate a new stream of income for the group, thereby reinforcing its position in the waste management industry and contributing to its long-term financial performance," it added.

Malaysia's RM9.5 billion Boeing purchase won't raise debt or deficit

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has assured that the RM9.5 billion Boeing aircraft purchase will not increase national debt or widen the fiscal deficit. Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying stated the acquisition is part of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). 'At present, everything is within our expectations,' she said during a Dewan Rakyat session. She was responding to Pasir Puteh MP Datuk Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh, who questioned debt control measures after the US deal. Nik Muhammad had also asked why debt remains high despite geopolitical risks. Lim explained that debt rises to fund development expenditures (DE) amid fiscal deficits. 'This financing will directly increase the government's debt level as long as deficits persist,' she said. She clarified DE is funded through multiple sources, including taxes and non-tax revenue, not just borrowing. Lim confirmed government borrowings stay within legal limits, with debt at 62.7% of GDP as of June 2025. Offshore borrowings of RM22.8 billion remain below the RM35 billion cap under Act 403. Malaysian Treasury Bills, at RM2 billion, are also within the RM10 billion limit set by Act 188. - Bernama

Tengku Zafrul refutes Tun M, says US trade deal was to 'save Malaysian jobs,' not about 'being happy'

KUALA LUMPUR – Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz has dismissed former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's criticism of Malaysia's trade agreement with the United States (US). He called the claims inaccurate, misleading and damaging to public understanding. Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad He stressed that the decision was not about being 'happy' with the deal, but about protecting the nation's economy and saving Malaysian jobs. 'This issue is not about being 'happy' but about the responsibility to save the livelihoods and incomes of Malaysians. 'Negotiations were held to avoid the US' 25 per cent tariff that threatened more than RM198 billion worth of exports and 100,000 jobs, particularly in the electrical and electronics sector," he said in a Facebook post on Thursday. He said Malaysia succeeded in securing a 19 per cent rate, the same as other Asean countries, thereby prioritising national interests and economic stability. Addressing Dr Mahathir's claim that Malaysia had removed all tariffs on 11,000 US products, Tengku Zafrul clarified that the actual figure was far lower. 'The actual fact is that only 60.4 per cent of tariff lines are now subject to zero duty, not 100 per cent as claimed. 'The difference between 60 per cent and 100 per cent is significant," he said. He added that this measure was not about 'giving away' tax revenue but about defending export value, protecting jobs and preventing negative economic spillover effects. Tengku Zafrul also refuted suggestions that Malaysia had agreed to supply rare earth elements exclusively to the US or any other country. 'This is another untrue allegation. There is no agreement, whether verbal or written, to supply rare earth elements exclusively to the US or any other country. 'Why would Malaysia be so foolish as to accept only 5 per cent of the actual value when we could obtain many times more," he said. He added that since Jan 1, 2024, Malaysia has, in fact, imposed a ban on the export of unprocessed rare earth elements in line with a Cabinet decision. This policy, he said, is strictly monitored and reviewed every six months. The minister said the ban is part of a strategy to ensure all rare earth elements are processed locally, boosting economic value and generating high-skilled jobs. Malaysia is building a complete value chain for the rare earth industry, from upstream mining to midstream processing and downstream high-tech manufacturing. The industry is expected to contribute up to RM9.5 billion to GDP by 2025 and create thousands of skilled jobs. 'It is not wrong to criticise, but when criticism is made based on untrue allegations, it is wrong and can mislead the public,' he said. He also urged all parties to rely on verified information from official statements before making accusations regarding national trade policies.

Fisheries sector records 7.1 per cent growth, contributes RM11.8bil to 2024 GDP

THE national fisheries sector recorded a 7.1 per cent growth in output in 2024, with total production reaching 1.91 million tonnes compared to 1.79 million tonnes the previous year. The Department of Fisheries Malaysia (DOF), in a statement today, said the sector contributed RM11.8 billion to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), accounting for 0.7 per cent of the national GDP, with the annual growth rate increasing to 2.9 per cent. 'The overall value of the fisheries sector rose from RM16.5 billion in 2023 to RM16.9 billion in 2024, representing a 2.5 per cent growth,' the statement said. According to DOF, the increase in output was driven by the capture fisheries subsector, which recorded landings of 1.39 million tonnes, a 9.6 per cent increase from 2023. Of this total, coastal fisheries contributed 1.18 million tonnes; deep-sea fisheries, 210,000 tonnes; and inland fisheries, 9,652 tonnes. As for the aquaculture subsector, DOF reported a moderate increase in production to 511,000 tonnes, compared to 506,000 tonnes the previous year. Despite a slight decline in seaweed production, freshwater and brackish water aquaculture saw growth of 5.7 per cent and two per cent, respectively. In the ornamental fish and aquatic plant subsector, DOF stated that production dropped to 209 million ornamental fish and 21 million bundles of aquatic plants. On international trade, DOF reported that Malaysia's fisheries exports were valued at RM4.02 billion, while imports reached RM6.35 billion. 'Major export destinations included China, Vietnam and Thailand, with the main products consisting of fresh, chilled and frozen goods based on the specific demands of each market,' the statement added. DOF said the fisheries sector involves a large labour force, including around 106,000 fishermen and 16,873 active aquaculture operators nationwide. Commenting on the sector's performance, Fisheries director-general Datuk Adnan Hussain said it reflects the sector's resilience and steady performance, with a significant contribution to national food security, coastal economic development and public well-being. — BERNAMA
