Chiefs rookie preview: Omarr Norman-Lott 2025 stat projections
Norman-Lott's two biggest competitors for snaps are Mike Pennel and free agent signee Jerry Tillery. Jones will dominate the rotation once again, and there's no realistic chance of Norman-Lott taking snaps away from the future Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee.

Despite being healthy for most of 2024, Pennel played just 320 regular season snaps across his 17 appearances. Tillery, who spent last year in Minnesota, played 467 snaps across 17 games. His addition doesn't even come close to replacing the 888 snaps vacated by Tershawn Wharton and Derrick Nnadi, who departed Kansas City as free agents.
The Chiefs lack developmental options behind Norman-Lott. Barring excellent offseasons, Fabien Lovett Sr. and Marlon Tuipulotu won't require snaps in 2025. That limits Kansas City's interior defensive line rotation to Jones, Norman-Lott, Pennel and Tillery, creating an excellent environment for the rookie to win snaps.
One of Norman-Lott's greatest weaknesses as a prospect was his lack of involvement on run downs. He faced run plays just 250 times across his final three collegiate seasons. For reference, Jones, who isn't an enthusiastic run defender, faced runs 224 times in 2024 alone. This trend might limit Norman-Lott to playing on passing downs, significantly reducing his snap total but refining his efficiency.

Playing primarily on passing downs allows Norman-Lott to maintain his explosiveness and energy throughout games, resulting in beneficial matchups in key late game situations. This snap allocation often results in a boom in sack and pressure production for athletic rushers.
Norman-Lott may put together a watered-down version of Braden Fiske's rookie campaign. If the new Chiefs rookie plays 500 snaps, with roughly 350 of those serving as pass rush opportunities, he could amass six or seven sacks and more than 30 pressures. Those aren't Defensive Rookie of the Year numbers, but they serve as a solid foundation for Norman-Lott's development.

Kansas City Royals designate fan-favorite Mark Canha for assignment
Kansas City Royals designate fan-favorite Mark Canha for assignment originally appeared on The Sporting News Baseball is a ruthlessly honest sport. The flukiest performers are humbled quickly, and the arms race of 100th-percentile athletes and innovative pitch design leaves little room for error. The game tells its players when it has passed them by, and team executives aren't far behind. On Monday, the Kansas City Royals rudely welcomed outfielder Mark Canha back from the 10-day injured list by designating him for assignment. Underwater and out of time The Royals have struggled to build upon their feisty 2024 campaign, hovering around .500 while watching playoff odds slip away. The underwhelming performance was epitomized by a revolving door of outfielders, almost all of whom have posted below-average offensive seasons. Canha's ineffectiveness made a spot on this post-deadline roster hard to justify. Slashing .212/.272/.265, Canha is sporting a 48 wRC+ across 125 injury-interrupted plate appearances. He has just a single home run to his name and six RBIs. The biggest culprit has been a power outage. His 90th-percentile exit velocity (100.9 mph) and max exit velocity (105.5 mph) are among the worst rates of his career, made worse by an approach and batted-ball distribution that suggests he was selling out for pull-side power -- perhaps a last-ditch effort to tap into a waning skill set. Between injuries and inconsistencies, it wasn't enough to produce. As such, it seems unlikely that he's claimed off waivers. He could be released or sent to Triple-A, should he accept the latter, but his production, recent injury history, and age (36) make him a suboptimal reinforcement. Subsequently, Canha may have played his last MLB game. If he has, the sport will say its farewell to a fan-favorite who has become known for his off-field love of finding the best food in big-league cities. MORE: Padres starting pitcher under fire after Dodgers sweep series The veteran runs an Instagram account, @bigleaguefoodie, where he documents his culinary endeavors. On Monday, he posted a picture with top prospect Jac Caglianone at The Sorcerer's Cone, a Harry Potter-themed ice cream truck in Omaha. Canha achieved his 10th year of service time this season, an accomplishment that fewer than 10% of players achieve. Canha has logged 121 home runs and 14.8 fWAR in his respectable decade-long career, which included stops with the (then) Oakland Athletics, New York Mets, Milwaukee Brewers, Detroit Tigers, and San Francisco Giants before his stint in Kansas City. A Bay Area icon but beloved around the game, it's worth taking the time to reflect on Canha's career before it officially ends. Royals get homers from Yastrzemski, Pasquantino and Garcia in 4-3 win over Rangers
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Mike Yastrzemski, Vinnie Pasquantino and Maikel Garcia homered to power the Kansas City Royals past the Texas Rangers 4-3 on Monday night. Michael Wacha (8-9) allowed two runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings for the win. He struck out three, walked none and permitted two earned runs or fewer for the seventh straight start. Carlos Estévez set a career high with his American League-leading 32nd save. Yastrzemski's shot to right-center was the 10th leadoff homer of his career and third with the Royals, matching a franchise record for any month. Kansas City acquired Yastrzemski from San Francisco at the July 31 trade deadline. Pasquantino hit a two-run drive over the right-field wall to give the Royals a 3-1 lead in the third. Bobby Witt Jr. was aboard on a leadoff walk. Garcia's homer in the fifth went over the left-field wall, just inside the foul pole. Kansas City has homered in eight consecutive games, tying a season high. The Rangers scored on RBI singles by Jonah Heim in the second and Evan Carter in the sixth. Rowdy Tellez had an RBI groundout in the eighth. Jack Leiter (7-7) gave up three runs and six hits in 3 2/3 innings. He struck out five and walked three. Key moment Royals catcher Luke Maile tagged out Joc Pederson at home plate as part of a double play off a throw from right fielder John Rave. The Rangers challenged the call and lost, keeping the score tied 1-all in the second inning. Key stat Texas went 2 for 8 with runners in scoring position and finished with 11 hits — 10 singles. Up next The teams play the second game of their series Tuesday night. Texas will start Merrill Kelly (9-7, 3.36 ERA) against Seth Lugo (8-6, 3.77). ___ AP MLB: AP MLB: The Associated Press
